  1. I would watch it! :) I love William Goldman! Definately should consider it! Maybe we should write him!
  2. This is what I was creating when I posted my interest about a Society for the Breathern The "Breatheran" commit themselves to teaching the history of Piracy, as a historical society of people willing to use themselves as tools of living history to teach and communicate the idea of Piracy and Pirvateering during it's long history, in a fun, loose and friendly enviroment. To communicate the ideas behind Piracy, it's standards, or lack there of, and teach the "fact from fiction" that Hollywood has painted on Pirates since the late 30's. Pirates have long been creatures of misunderstanding. Why not wear the shoes of a seaman for a day, rigging sails and learning knots. Learn how to chart a destination, swing a sword, and swing from a deck to help plunder a ship? If your day so be enjoyed, come and visit with us and become member of the crew, by participating in classes teaching sewing, history of the seas, discussion groups about pirates, their plunders, benders, and ends at a monthly or bi monthly meeting. Since the nature of a piracy is rough and bawdy, the maturity of those participating must be 18 and over with the acception of their parent as a participant, and responsible for their minor. Basically my idea is creating a "enactment" like that those that Civil War buffs do, but less structured. Striking an area that could create a pirate "city", with use of those becoming characters on the land who have created Historical Captains, first mates, and Quartermen/women as a crew, to interact with those that want to come in to learn some history, ask pirates questions, maybe even go on a treasure hunt. Then on closed days, it would be all enactors gathereing together to created an enviroment for just them. Costumed the majority of the time, creating characters, different crews, working with prewritten story lines as in RPG, and lead by a main character working as basically a "Storyteller" for lack of better word. Creating battles, seeking treasure, stealing women, taking captives. Would be interesting. :) I love history, that's why I participated for many years with the Faires working with FOF and the Living History Society. And a large majority of them were not kid Friendly that I attended, even in California, because of the drinking, racey shows, and other things. I always considered Faire an adult place, as do many friends I know who have children. But then again, this all depends on where you go, who you hang with, and how you participate. One booth hawked "come try our juicy melons!" Double meaning yes, but a smart kid would get it. I want to be historical, but fun. I want to be able to laugh communicate history, and teach while having a good time. That's the important matter when it comes to groups. Either their "all fun" or "no fun". I tried to participate in SCA and couldn't get into it. They took the fun out of it, sorry to those that did participate. If I wanted to participate in a historical pirate group the balance of historical and fun would have to remain equal. That's what keeps people coming, and enjoying themselves. :) Izzy
  3. Happy Berfday Munky! :) :) I made you a nanner cake. :)
  4. Always happy for input. :) I would love to have a place on the beach in Panagasian, a resort. They have beautiful places there. I saw one selling for 200,000 on ebay. Amazing place. too rich for my blood but you understand. :) I just dream of visiting right now. :) Helping my family there. My grandfather left in the 30's and only was able to see where he was born once before he died. It's my hope to see where he is from and where he lived. :) Sending a PM your way. Izzy "Parrots give Pirates Courage!"
  5. If your savvy for the Philippines, I have family there. They'll feed ya and treat you nice. :)
  6. You'd be welcome at Ren Faires. Folks aren't going to be disgruntled if you wear what you own. Heck you might meet other enthusists that do Revolutionary War eneactment and Civil War. It's funny you bring that up, I considered after seeing how many enthusists there are for pirates creating a society (if you could call it that) for enthusists. This was of course before I found Pyracy.com and all it's fine crew. This is what I had in mind, and since most of us are across the country and some in other countries. I belong to a Guild for Wenches, but am inactive, because our faire isn't active in the guild. We're like a grey zone. We're not sure if it's the management not wanting us, or what. They have a privateers guild, which some here belong to, but I always wanted something I could call me own, with my own rules, ideas and imput of a wide margin of folks.
  7. How are you constructing the hat? Are you making two seperate brims and so on? If you are Buckrum works like a dream. I use it to stiffen brims of hats. It's in expensive, and holds up well. Some folks use Spray Starch, but if your near water, it would suck, because it can run. Try buckrum, it comes on rolls and some Bridal Supply places carry it. I know where to buy it locally here in Ohio, worse come to worse. Izzy
  8. Oh rockin'! This makes me feel very good hearing all of these stories, about my best friend going. :) :)
  9. I had throught the Cavilier was "too late" in time. I see them alot at my old faire. :) Had to ask.
  10. *chuckles* I was tierd when I put it up. But no harm in correcting me, I always get confussed on those types of words. *grins*
  11. Conner, if yer needin' more imput on Irishmen garb, I played Irish characters on Faire mostly. :) Feel free to pick my brain. Izzy
  12. We used to have "stickers" that a blacksmithy made us. it was basically a twisted piece of ironwork. Worked really great for spearing potatos in soups, and stealing hunks off of turkey legs. I'll look into a ditty sack. :) Always lookin' always addin'. I'm a frickin' squirrel. Choo Choo Cho..Nuck Nuck Nuck. (Wait isn't that Curley from Three Stooges?)
  13. Tales: You rock! Thanks so much Sweets! :) The imput is appriecated and now noted. :) Izzy
  14. *blinks, raises an eyebrow and scoots toward the door*
  15. Like those throwing cards we always used to buy in high school, that have sharpened egdes. Aw the dreams of being Gambit from X-men, Mon Cher!
  16. Olaf! Thank you exactly what I was looking to hear. :) :) I appreicate the imput! :) My best friend can walk but it's shakey currently. We are hoping for the best with her, since this is a new progression of her condition. Hopefully she'll be strong enough to wonder on her own power by then, but I do thank you very much for your imput! I'm counting days now! Hope to meet you there! Izzy
  17. Exactly. Our faire in CA was 1540 to 1580 depending on class, and so on. They did it to allow a "mature" but still beautiful Elizabeth ruling. Thank you I'm glad I'm not the only one that thought that also, about the tri corner hat, Hawkyns. I've seen folks come late in Mustateer costumes, and others as 1720's pirates and feel out of sorts. But we always tried to make them welcome. That was the joy of it. :) Yes, Breeches/Knickers/venisians. You understood me! Oh good! It's like TOmato and ToMAto, from East to West or faire to faire on that one. Harbormaster, I would say you are a mix of Elizabethian and Colonial with the look of Colonial. Like Hawkyn's said, maybe try a different idea like a doublet, and hat. But yes, I can see his thoughts on your boots. I would be worried about wet planks too. SCA Boots does nice boots no heel for inexpensive. Never can have too many boots. Hawkyns what say you to the Pirates that wear Caviliar hats? I'm curious on that. I'm looking for a hat, and I like those, but I don't want to look funny. I considered hatless as a woman, but the sun will do a number on my skin so a hat is in order. Izzy
  18. We wear our cups on our belts, because it was something we were taught was done in the time. It was taught that you came to the table baring your fork and spoon with cup. The Table was made with "bowls" carved out in the planks, where the food was served to you. When the food was done, the table was washed down, and you cleaned your own wares. This was done in the poorest of homes. Most people at faire dress as the lowest classes, simple farmers, and their families. In classes I was taught before working faires, we were taught this was the proper idea of a person of 1550 of our class. That what we owned was dear to us, and that after the Plague people didn't feel comferable offering cups to strangers, or folks or spoons. Most of our information came from the Living History Society that helped found Renaissance Education. I think a Haverstrap on a woman would be uncomfterable since we are more commonly bare across the neck and chest, but I could see wearing a ditty bag off a belt, or on a long strap for our things.
  19. Hi, I've got a few good questions. :) Handicap accessable? My best friend recently had to start using a power scooter. She and I were talking about going to PIP, but we want to make sure she would be comferable, and happy attending in her scooter. Have you seen others in Scooters/Zippies (power wheel chairs)? We're also discussing putting up a page on hanicap accessable events for enactors/fairegoers, and the ins and out of it, so that even those in wheel chairs or on crutches can attend. If you can offer imput that would be wonderful! Izzy
  20. Thanks for the "bulk of the festivities" telling us the 1st through 5th. :) Gives me time to plan. :) Thanks!
  21. Usually 3/4 of enactors I am with are wearing cups on their belts. I don't think it looks nearly as strange as some think. I wear the cup, pouch combo, because it's what I'm used to, and it helps keep everything on me. Most faires also will fill your mug/tankard with your drink of choice, so I stick with it as a current option. :) I've got an old book on making macrame from the 1800's. I'll really have to try a diddy bag. Do you any photos of people that carry them?
  22. I found clumps of feathers on Ebay, I think six for 9.00 but in weird colours. Try looking again. Put in just Feathers or the type of bird you want. :) As an idea. :) *chuckles* >*))))))))))>< *smacks Nigel for the Halabit!*
  23. I wear a belt to hold my extras, cup and so or I'm stuck with a basket, which wouldn't look very nice on a man.
  24. Foxe, Thank you for your site. I took a look, and that's what I envisioned Pirates of the times of Elizabeth 1 looking like. So now I know I nailed it on the head. I'm starting to get requests for costuming for Elizabethian Pirates, so I want to know that I'm doing right by those coming to me. Some of them work, other's play. I'm working on a pirate costume for myself that is more girly than most. A lot of women will wear pants, which makes sense, but since Faires are celebrations, I figure I can get away with a skirt. Which other wise on a boat would be rediculious. I've been on a boat, in skirt, and bleh. I've got a middles feel to the cut of my bodice, and warmer colours. I think it'll work out really well. I'll take photos when I'm done. :) I'm taking my time, wanting the details to be right. Izzy
  25. Thanks All! I'm building up a section for Elizabethian Sea Doggies on my site for links, I wasn't aware of other groups, links etc. So keep sending them on! Thanks for all the extras, I've never seen these links, and I'm like a squirrel, if my favorites were acorns I'd have 8 score oak trees by now. I figured out by looking that pirates were pirates in anything they wore. It's the actions that created the image. I think in the inital post I said I figured out they wore what everyone else wore, based on their funds, but thank you so much for clarifiying and adding to it! Foxe, consider contriduting your groups link to www.faires.co.uk or www.faires.com Mike lists groups from both sides of the pond, and is a lover of England, having returned last year and telling me about the great historical copies they brought back for their costumes. And without plugging Faires.com too much myself, consider donating a few dollars/pounds to him to help keep him going. His dedication to Faires and history is one beyond the call of duity. He's been doing Faire since the 60's, and I did faire with him my first year working. He help spark the passion I have for faire, by showing me that it was a history lesson in every aspect. He's very dear to my heart, if you couldn't tell! Captain Williams I'll come take a look! I'm trying to not get too addicted too many boards or else I'll live online, and that isn't good for my back. ROFL But I'm always open to being there, even if I can't post often. :) Thanks all! :) Izzy
