i took some pictures of the various wreck recovered shoes to a leather worker here. she came up with an observation i had not heard of. Crediting GoF with all of the legwork has anyone seen this in the vertical but stitch at the heel. the top and bottom three or four stitches seem to be overlapped in the opposite direction. ie, the top three or four stitches overlap towards the outstep, there is the but stitch, then the bottom overlaps towards the instep for three or four stitches. something like this was/ is used to spread and reinforce a seam. this is based on the following pictures from GoF's site. On the bottom whydah drawing of the back of the shoe, there is someth…

Help a fellow pirate out ! I'm making room for my new kit so I'm auctioning off my tricorn from Jack McKay. Even with the shipping price it is still less expensive than going to Captain Jack's Pirate Hats directly. Have a look. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI....cSELL.m315.lVI

Ahoy, mates. I've some fabric I have yet to be rid of. The images are too large to post here, as the smaller the size, the less the quality of the designs. But, first off... what needs to really go is 7+ yards of purple silk Dupioni. Purchased at $75... I'm willing to let go of it for $50 or best offer or trade*. Also, I've remenants of the gold jacquard I used for the gold gown I wore last year at RF2. There is about 2 yards of this left, enough to make a nice waistcoat, mates. I'll take best offer or trade* on this. Red paisley fabric at least a yard and a 4th with remenant. Enough to make a nice waistcoat. Best offer or trade*. I've also a pair of black …

Ahoy all! It's a new year and time to get back to the kit. As a quick refresher, here's a photo of me from last year's ren faire. This is obviously day two as evidensed by my absent shoes and stockings. So far I'm sporting a fairly universal linen shirt (with a little later style collar), slops from flyingcanoetraders.com (my only purchased piece), and a wool/linen lined sailors short jacket from Kass. I'm wanting to come up with a Justacorps to wear over everything but I want to stay somewhat consistent with the time period and I think my pants and shirt collar (a taller collar than the short stand collar) are probably late for Kass's 1680 justacorp pattern. Any su…

I am in the market for trying to find some period women's shoes to wear with my period outfits. I have been unsuccessful at trying to find something that would pass for them at thrift stores. If you have some links please post them. Thanks, Rumba

I wanted to do a Boot Strap Bill look, and I'm not sure what style of hat his character wears in the films. Does anyone know what kind of hat he wears? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank ye, Storm Head Edward

I was paying my cable modem bill today and saw a really nice 'pirate' like sweatshirt on a fellow in front of me, but didn't recognize the connection. Engaged the bloke in conversation, just in case he was a Pyratical type, and found out that it was a "punk rock" connection for him. The band was the Dropkick Murphys, which I found was mentioned in the Sea Shanty section of the pub. Googled the said band and found they have a lot of 'pirate' related prints on T-shirts and sweatshirts at their Merch site. Dropkick Murphys Merchandise store Listened to 'Shippin up to Boston' the song the sweatshirt I saw featured on the net. a little bit out of my usual listening zone,…

I was wandering around eBay looking for old medical instruments when I came across this: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...em=330207861503 For those of you who are at least passingly familiar with skeleton replicas (*ahem* Lily), look closely at this one. It's different than both the standard female and Bucky skeletons you can buy. The positioning of the bones and the sculpt is different. Ooooh, I'd like to have three different kinds of skeleton replicas... (I don't know why this is, however.)

I was at Cabela's ( a hunting, fishing and outdoor gear store here in the USA) and found a new machete. It is 28" overall, with a 21 5/8" 420 stainless blade. It was $24. It has a 'saw back' but that could be cut out with a dremel abrasive wheel I think. Just wondering if it might not make a nice, 'cheap' hanger. At the very least, I can engage trees and brush in boarding actions out in the woods.

Well.... Its completed, but I haven't picked it up yet (I live in Germany and will be visiting the states for Thanksgiving and will get it then). Anyway. I was going to do this as my first kit build. But life and lack of skills got in the way, so I sent it off to John Buck and he got it done for me. (photo by J Macek) More info on Hand Mortars Here!

I have been looking for the right Neckerchief for some time, and I had found it a while back, but, as the dollar/euro exchange rate sucks, I figured I would save some money and pick it up in person, instead of paying their hefty 20€ ($28) shipping charge. This neckerchief comes from the Le Musée de l'Impression sur Etoffes or the Museum of Printed Textiles in Mulhouse, France. They have a pretty interesting collection of stuff, and is worth the stop if you are in the area. I happened to be in the area last weekend, as my wife (aka the "Warden") has family in Switzerland, and we were going there to spend the weekend. Mulhouse was on the way, so we stopped by. Unfort…

Well I ordered my pirate boots from Caboots... and if anyone starts with the whole "pirates didn't wear boots" thing I swear I'm gonna keelhaul you... and for the most part I couldn't be happier with the service. I ordered an 11 1/2, which is what I generally wear, but when I got them they were too big. They sent the right size, it's just that they seem to run a size big, in my experience. So I sent them back to exchange them. This is the point where I usually handle things via email. In my experience, Caboots is HORRIBLE with email correspondance. So if you have questions or problems, just call them. There's barely any wait and they are exceptionally helpful. I …

My dear friends and musical duo, Mallory and McCall are now selling some goodies. Mallory had to have surgery back in December for his back situation, had to go back into the hospital because of infection, he's now home. But sadly this wonderful couple can barely make ends meet, so Jana McCall has come up with some wonderful and unusual necklaces done with Monkey Fists and beads. Do check them out, she gave me a wonderful one at the Ojai Pirate Faire back last Sept. They are great for anyone, male or female. Mallory and McCall jewlery

As some of ye know I'm making Barbossa's outfit. Trying to make it EXACTLY like that in the film. It's a slow process with all the research and constant gazing at the pictures I have, etc. The only major trouble I am having is with the Waistcoat. Can anyone shed some light out there on it? I'll see if I can scan in the best picture I have of it. Otherwise, if anyone has the AWE Calender, look at June with the centerfold of Barbossa (guaranteed not nude racy) and the detail is spectacular, gives you detail of the waistcoat and pattern. Can't seem to figure out if it's a linen or silk or cotton or a mixture. Better yet, WHERE to obtain this exact fabric. I've ma…

I have been informed that my "tight" pants are just not piratey enough. I need some baggier pants to tuck into my huge belled boots. Can anyone help a mate with this? I can't do "the pirate without pants" now can I?

Ahoy! Under the theory one can never have too many pirate calendars, I figured I'd create a Pirate Brethren 2008 calendar using Cafepress. If you want to purchase one, or just see the results, visit Blackjohn's Swag Shop at: http://www.cafepress.com/blackjohnsswag
