I was watching my copy of "Kidnapped" with Armand Asante as Alan Brecht Stuart last night for the 200th time. I caught one of those little details that have escaped my scrutiny all this time. Ebenezer Balfour has a `buss that he pokes through the window in a couple of scenes and I just noticed it has a folding bayonet attached. Anyone know of existing examples from in or near our period? Now I done it...actually I did it a month ago or so, but I broke th' tip off me ramrod, unfortunately I did not know it until I got home so I do not know where to find it - tried blaming it on three little kittens but that don't seem to work... So, does anyone know a good source for locating ram rods or ram rod tips? I need t' replace one for an Elliot Light Dragoon. I have written to both Middlesex and Track of the Wolf - I did see a tip at Track of the Wolf for "45 cal and up" but only in steel, the others they offer I do not know if they would fit as I no longer have my original to take measurements from. Does anyone know the difference in size between a Brown Bess …

Just received my Loyalist Arms & Repairs doglock blunderbuss (and yes I got a few strange looks from my fellow sailors while carrying it to the boat not to mention the seagulls became quite scarce). Since I'm aboard ship, as it were, it has already starting to tarnish in the salt air. This brought to mind polishing, which brought to mind, would they have actually polished them? From my previous muzzleloading experience we browned barrels in order to do a controlled rusting of the barrel so as to prevent uncontrolled rusting. It occurs to me that letting the barrel turn green naturally might be more historically correct, but perhaps not structurally sound, although…

I'm surely not the first this has happened to, but during a recent parade my pistol took a mind to make friendly with the pavement. No real damage done, just a little roughed up on the butt-plate and the barrel - both brass. Now I don't mind a few blemishes on my pistol, but I would prefer these scratches not look quite so fresh and pavement-like. Any suggestions on what I might best use to buff them out and perhaps soften the sharp edges a bit? I hesitate to use steel wool or anything for fear of making things worse, so I would definitely value the advice of someone more experienced. Thanks!

i'm getting ready to start work on a 1700 naval carriage, with soild deck. i'm building it to fit the hearn's 1805 swivel gun, it is 30'' long, weigths 90lbs, trunnions are 1 1/4", has a 1 3/4bore(golfball) will fire 2oz. of powder. i was able to get a couple of long pieces of white oak they are 2 1/2" thick, 6" wide and 6' long. i want to cut them to where they are 1 1/4" thick and use it for the cheeks to rest the trunnions in. my question is will it take the recoil at that width?

My best brudder has a nice wheelock and it's been sitting in his curio cabinet for around twenty years. I've been on him about building a weapon around it ever since he got it. Now that I have decided to quit doing events, he decides he's ready to start putting parts together for this project. Go figger! Anyhow, I was tryin to come up with some images of stocks and guns with the wheelock, but not having much success. Anyone have a link or two to share? Thanx! Bo

Hey all, I'm on a few message boards for the F&IW era and other later colonial boards as well... One thing I have seen come up a few times over the last few days that I thought I would share here (as it might be of interest), is that the company "Loyalist Arms and Repair" whose official web site is Loyalist Arms web REAL web site.... Anyways, apparently someone operating as "Royalist Arms and Repair" has copied the Loyalist web site, and is engaging in questionable business practices knowing full well that Loyalist may get the blame for it. I do not have the dopplegangers web site or URL, but I thought I would share this as a consumer warning as I know many here hav…

Rushed for Sterling. SMALL SWORD Hallmarked for 1676 - 1677 A sword with a silver hilt was one of the marks of a gentleman, word for fashion and, less often, self defense. It was worn on a wide belt across the body and hung almost at the coat hem, angled to show the decorated hilt. Hilt of cast and engraved silver, with an etched blade The hilt made in London by William Badcock (Active 1668-1679); blade possibly made in England PICs Enjoy!

While looking for a more detailed picture of Selkirk's sea chest (posted in Twill, Campaign Furniture) I came across this from the NYT, December 27, 1910: CRUSOE MAY HAVE OWNED THIS GUN; English Tourist Here Tells of Buying an Old Flint-Lock for Twenty Shillings. The article describes the purchase of the gun and it's authentication by the British Museum. It also states the the man, Randolph Berens, was going to Florida for the winter. I have found no other references to the gun other than this. So where is the gun now?

I've seen one kit at Dixie Gun Works, but its a percussion not a flintlock. Has anyone else ever seen either kits or replicas for sale? I know this one would need some modification but I'd be willing to make it work and the price isn't bad IMO but I would like to know if anyone else has seen anything different. Thanks for your time.

95 Layer Damascus Boarding Cutlass by Kerry and Matt Stagmer. This little beauty is 95 layers of 15N20 and 4130. The blade is one hard little cutter. I don't have an exact weight on it right now, but I would say it is right around the 2lbs mark if not under. It feels ultra light in the hand. We used cocobolo again for the handle. She doesn't have a home yet. We made her just for fun. I was thinking about doing a cutting demo with it, but I havn't had the time. OAL : 26 3/4" Blade Length : 20" I have the sword in hand so I can get more stats if you like.

I understand if this subject is moved to Twill, but this forum also seemed appropriate. In the interest of serving myself and others on multiple fronts, perhaps we could use a good timeline of muskets with images and historical references for each. I've seen my share of them on various vendor sites, but I also know that the replicas available and the times they represent are sometimes debated. For example, I've seen and heard different years place on the Brown Bess. I'm looking into the purchase of my first musket ever, so the topic is especially important to me. I want to see it all, from Russian to French firearms and back again.

I had a thread about these cannons at one time ., however I have lost the thread and also changed servers myself . This means all pics of any posts I had made with pics .., no longer have pics. Our new server provided by Dreamhost is a 10 year license so these pics will be around for a while I hope. In my earlier thread I explained we had to meet a certain criteria for shipping (Fit into a 24"box) due to costs . Also when buying metals (Round bar) it comes in 13"increments . There for to build a 27 inch long cannon costs the same as building a 39 inch ., when buying material for one. These cannons are not anything period correct or otherwise . These are a collaboration o…

These are the first two in a new series that I will be doing. The prototype (top) of this piece was clayed up and has a hamon that is hard to get a picture of. The handle was made from the end of an old Oak ore. The 2nd(bottom) one I made for a friend that wanted an exotic wood instead of just oak. Bubinga is what we decided on. I left the wood unfinished because he wanted to finish it himself. The guards are 1/4" cold rolled that I slightly dished and filed around the outside and then polished. Both are razor sharp. About 14.5" OAL Comments welcome as always. This not historically pirate but I made it for a buddy of mine that will be carrying it as his camp …
