  1. CapnWilliam, you make several excellent points... and actually, the sword I referred to was indeed that... a sword. Curved and heavier than most, but still a sword. Short, heavy bladed cutlasses for hacking and slashing, would have been used by the men, not the officers. And they would have been handed out (along with boarding pikes, axes, and pistols) when the ship went to quarters... I'm speaking of naval ships at this point, but pirates acted similarly...

However, scabbard construction was FAIRLY standard (not to say there weren't exceptions)... most old swords I've seen that still have their scabbards (none older than the Revolution, unfortunately), were constructed of wood covered in leather or heavy cloth...

  2. Love sucks.

Yup! *slides over a copy of Def Leppard's "Love Bites" and a bottle of whiskey*

    Humanity has gone week!

Yup! Unfortunately, Americans more than others... we go to a foreign country, and can't drink the water, can't eat the ice, can't indulge in the fresh fruit, and worry about eating the meat...

  3. I can't believe it took me so long to find this...

So far I've had the pleasure to meet:

Christine (damn fine lass, great pirate, and fantastic Dineyland tour guide!)

Cap'n Hurricane (one hell of a great pyrate captain)

    Diosa

    OryginalCinn

    Sheila

    LadyBarbossa

    Scupper

The amazing Jamaica Rose of NQG, with whom I had the priviledge of sailing the Caribbean, exploring Nassau, and listening to tales of pirates of old... an experience I'll treasure forever!

  4. When I was on active duty and stationed in the DC area, I had some buddies who were security forces at the Naval Academy in Annapolis... one of the many cool things I got to see was a British Naval sword (hanger, cutlass?) from the Napoleonic wars... I know its not exactly the era you are looking for, but it DID have the wooden framed scabbard, covered by leather...

  5. You're welcome Capt. Morgan you salty dog you! Thank you for being a good and honorable Marine. Even though you know I disagree about the war I'm glad there are people like you over there. I been wondering how you and your family are doing.

Again, thanks, Maria... we're just doin' our jobs... B)

And, everyone here is doing well! Thanks for asking!

Well done Marine! Well done! Carry on!

Aye, Gunny... tell your son Semper Fi' and to keep his head down...

  6. Frankly the legal system needs some kind of major re-vamping. Serial murderers sit on death row and appeal for 15 years, eating tax-payer money, while some schmoe who stole a hundred thousand dollars from a multi-billion dollar company is sentenced for and spends the next 80 years in prison. Both cases are crimes, I understand that, but I've personally seen several convicted murderers spend 3 - 5 years in prison, just to get out for "good behavior" and return to being a thorn in society's side, dealing drugs and committing more heinous crimes... I shed no tears for executed criminals.

  7. Why did yer Department do such a stupid thing?

    Capt. William

The whole Hollywood bank robbery happened, and the PD figured we needed something that would reach out and punch through body armor... my little M4 just doesn't have the same psychological effect as racking the pump action on a shotgun...

  8. Believe it or not, there's actually a pretty decent nautical pub in Milwaukee, although it's (fittingly) hard to find by land (they have their own dock - getting there by boat is much more straightforward. Well, kinda.)

    Barnacle Buds

I've only been there once, and am itching to go again to see if it's as cool as I remember. From what I recall, it very much has that feeling of being an old shack, with shelves overflowing with old junk (some nautical, but some farm equipment.)

That place is literally about a quarter mile from my Marine unit's building... and I never knew it was there!

Oooo... will you lease a vacation room at the olde inn when you guys re-open?? I'll help refurbish... I'll work for food!

  9. I've seen this same display at Toys R Us by my house, and it has the same "dead man's chest" logo... it was on a photo of a toy called "Treasure Island"... it looks to be a BIG set, but I see no info on a "Treasure Island" set out there, either... hmmm...

3:00 AM Central?! That's a lot of Irish Coffee to keep me away that long! I should get that flashing 12:00 off the downstairs VCR...

Jiminy- F'ing - Christmas...! I'm in the same boat as you, Jack... so, a quick poll... do I stay up "late", or wake up early?!?!?!?

  11. Great pics, Rummy! Ye all have a fyne crew, indeed!

me wish te Santa fer all me fellow pirates be wrist-watches sos we can all get on the right time fer a get-together.

Nah... watches aren't even needed... just the offer of "Free rum!" is usually all the encouragement needed to get most pirates gathered in the same place... :o:o
