  1. i kinda agree with mission. i'm looking for something to define my role at the event, also. but patrick does have a point about too many chiefs. if we were to educate any public attendees, maybe a few more different positions would be beneficial. since this is our first PiP, and reenactment, i'll let everyone else decide how it will go. and even decide where we will fit in better. for the good of the company kinda thang.... do we even really need titles ??? there are certain people that can and will dedicate more time and effort into organizing etc., etc., and are thought of as "leaders" anyway. maybe leave it at that ??? since i am a newbie, mebbe i'll fill whatever void the encampment needs , and there are more knowledgable (sp. ?? ) people than i that knows what is needed. just my 2 cents worth :)
  2. mustav missed that one.... did read the one on "tentage"
  3. besides a tent, what kind of other things do you have for encampments ?? chairs ?? table of some kind ?? storage chest ?? looking for ideas that i could use for the encampment without bringing the foldup comfy chairs... tia
  4. my mistake.... the "gromments" were not called bulls eyes... under further examination ( sounds technical, huh ?? ), the notes for the pic did not point out the " grommets" . the bulls eyes were for guiding the ropes that furled ( rolled ) the sails up.. they do show sewn "grommets" but do not go into their construction. probably holes that were sewn to beef them up a bit.. there are still " grommets" in the sails, but they are not called bulls eyes. sorry
  5. welcome !! the first round of drinks are on you... feel like a bloody mary tonite, thank you.. yes i have learned alot from this forum, all presented by the greatest batch of pirates to be found there's alot you can learn, and alot of fun also.. have a good time here
  6. the book i have doesn't mention material, but you are probably right about the brass ones. size would depend on the size of the sail. bigger sail, bigger rope, bigger "grommet". i'll see if i can squeeze in time to post a link to some pics out of the books i have. no scanner, so i take a pic, and the upload. last ones turned out fine.. double round seem stitch ?? have to look.. sometimes the names change but i'll see.
  7. pc shoes may be a problem. but we will do what we can. weren't reebok sandals pc ??? shirts, pants, and neck scarf shouldn't be a problem. just sewing time. wife can sew almost anything :) the oldest attendant will make his own kit. thanks for the tips hopefully, we can get it all put together
  8. looked over a few books i have.... they did use "grommets" in sail making. but they were called "bullseyes" and weren't like grommets today. i did not see a listing for the material used, but i suspect iron. these were round rings which were then sewn into the sail for the purpose of attaching lines of various types. todays grommets do away with the sewing business... since tents and shelters were more than likely made from sails, ( duh, readily available ) there probably were SEWN IN grommets. from the book lore of ships
  9. william red wake recommended that i ask you for kit suggestions for youngsters.. apparently, you may be familiar ??? our youngest ones are 3,5,6 and 10 i was thinking something simple like slops, shirt, and a neck scarf... oh, and a hat. any thoughts ?? tia count de monet ( french dog ??? ) tu est falle :)
  10. ok , so i am the sailing master and the wife mission's assistant ?? as this will be our first PiP, also, we will be soaking in the sites of key west, the festival, and everything else as well. besides, i am NOT going to key west and refrain from sailing !! i'll stick a sail on a log if i have to. hmmm. mebbe steal patrick's sail tarp... grab an oar for a mast.... with so many guy lines holding up tents, nobody would miss a few... also need powder monkey kit suggestions. all the way down to the rope and buckets for carrying the powder. got a few movies i could rewatch to get ideas. slops, shirt, neck scarf ?? anything else ??
  11. OOPS !! this was supposed to go in the mercury crew thread !! sorry
  12. i can volunteer to be sailing master. i have experience sailing lakes, not the sea.. i have a few books on period ships that i can use as a refresher to update my knowledge and terminology so as to make a more believable character. lemme know what you guys think.. also my wife being an r.n. could serve as cook or surgeon's assistant.
  13. are grommets ( you know, the brass type ) period for tents ?? seriously considering making our tent. are grommets period or did they use ties ??
  14. maybe we could supply the powder monkeys
  15. the wife and i have decided to venture down to key west to enjoy the festivities. we are going to join the mercury encampment in what ever capacity we can. with the size of our family--- 10 children -- and not all will be going--we are a little limited with help, but we will do what we can :) hopefully by then, all kids will have a kit of some sorts, a tent will be done, my new coat and breeches will be done, wife's kit will be done, etc. etc. so let us know how we can be of some service
  16. been what's called an "inside electrician" for the past 19 years. "outside electricians" are the pole guys. worked in all 4 ( now 3 ) car plants, power houses, office buildings, strip malls, indoor malls, chemical factories, you name it. power houses are the worst. they schedule their down time during the winter when a boiler can be shut down and reworked. at times, i could be working next to an existing boiler, sweating my a@@ off, and then have to go outside in freezing weather. and this is all while i am getting covered in a layer of coal dust. filthy, hot, and usually heavy work. car plants are great !! usually i get to work on the computerized control systems for the assembly lines.. the niiiiice work :) right now just working on a new grocery store. ibew local 1 member, st. louis, mo.
  17. welcome.... i'll have rum.. s'il vous plait.
  18. welcome to the pub i'm new here too. the pub is full of wonderful people, enjoy your stay.. a pirate for a mate ?? lacky lass..
