  1. Foucault's Pendulum - Umberto Eco I read it once in my late 20's, thought I might give it another read. I remember liking...back then it sparked my interest and a bit of study in Kabbalah, simply so I could better understand the book. Its been a long time since I read it but if I remember correctly its.. the knights templar, physics, mathematics, secrets, stone henge, the pyramids, the church, alchemy and atomic energy... don't you just LOVE sci-fi that draws on history and conspiracy theories?
  2. PIRATES BY COMMITTEE --- LOL Nell: Captain sir, I think Jamaica would be a much better choice. (turns to Patrick) Chrispy: I would rather go to New Providence...there's a girl there who owes me.... ummm....some GOLD yeah GOLD Nell to the Quartermaster: and I was wounded in the last battle...where's my share for my injury?? Quartermaster: What injury? Nell: ...look (shows him a cut on her hand) ....a string broke while playing that hauling song when we were coming about in the last battle. (Patrick and Chrispy roll their eyes ) Chrispy: Hey thats not a real battle wound? Nell: Its a wound and it happened in battle. Captain: Well since there's a disagreement....we will need to form a sub committee to decide what thats worth. Quartermaster: Fine ...but captain we are underway, we need to decide our destination and chart a bearing afore we run aground. Nell: (bats her eyes at the captain ) ouch... it really hurts... (Patrick and Chrispy roll their eyes .... again) Captain: ok... now who wants to chair the sub committee.... CCCCCRRRUUUUUNCH!!! Captain: Shivering Timbers we've run aground. Buggers...now we need to form a committee to decide whose fault that was! (illustration of entire crew at the ships rails looking over the side staring at the rocks...willing the ship to move.)
  3. Are you f#%#&n Kidding me!!!!!! Your dad's guitars are currently Thought of as "HOLY GRAILS" of acoustic guitars, Highly sought after due to the exquisite craftsmanship! I will dig out my blue book later and see what they say. Oh yea and the book "pearl inlay" is regarded as a bible of sorts, as it was on of the first modern books to broach the subject. I have owned a copy since I was a teenager, and it most definitley COUNTS! You...You...crazy pirate you! You continue to amaze! There is an active thread right now in acousticguitarforum.com where an owner of one of you dads guitars raves about the quality and tone of the guitar, and is currently seeking any information on your dad! That blows me away! I was so excited I forgot to look and see if I was logged in...CHRISPY

  5. AM and PM boobies.....better than throwing on a little black dress and lipstick after work. simply inflate after 6pm, and you don't have to worry about whether the boss will take you seriously during the day... best of both worlds. Wow you should market those you could make a killing.
  6. Ditto... once you guys are about to start another round please give a heads up. I wanna start with a fresh book..
  7. Ok to get back on topic...since we're discussing committee's ... we could do a demonstration about how Pirates ruled by "committee" and how that often turned out...LOL.....I've had many daydreams in the middle of a meeting about handling things the pirate way. sometimes the dream of cutting through the red tape overtakes me. mmwwahaha:D Anyway.... It would be interesting to show a group of pirates divvying up shares from a prize- a table full of loot and a bunch of scalawags lined up to get paid is an attention getter.. and then they could discuss the next action and decide on it. We do big battles and skirmishes ...things like the conquistadors, but I think we could get a decent audience for a little theatrical bit like the pay out. And I'm sure an audience would be interested to see how pay was determined etc. etc.
  8. Oh I'd like to agree ...You get what you give but we ALL know that in't always the case.......I'm sure I'm not the only one whose had the experience of working an event "scrathcing backs" , just to watch numerous people drop out each year... only to later find out WHY they dropped out. I've been involved with many of these business organizations over the years, and I've seen all kinds. I've also, more than once, seen volunteers work hundreds of hours, scratching backs and I've seen certain organizers take more and moreand give less and less to those putting in all the work until people are angry and bitter and the event no longer exists. There's a phenominon in some towns that many "loving" (sarcasm) refer to as the Bubba system... until you've experienced it first hand.. well... theres no red tape quite like it. I'm not knocking them ALL... believe me I agree thats how is SHOULD be.. and in many instances its true you do you get out what you put into a relathionship... still anyone whose been in a relationship has to know there are no guarantees no matter HOW MUCH you put IN. There will always be people who are only concerned with what they can get out...and are not interested in putting much in... thats also the "nature" of some humans, sad to say.
  9. Wish I'd seen that History Channel show will have to look for it on the net. My opinion only.... though I have no proof of anything.... considering quite often pirate crews were made up of men from different ships, some often pressed from ships that were taken as prizes, from different countries and cultures some were often even slaves...and seeing as tattooing is ritualistic in some countries, and was around LONG BEFORE the GAoP. Depending on the job a man did on board, I don't think we could be absolutely positive that there were NO tattoos on any of the men, just because we have no written evidence. Though we can't assume there were. I'm sure in certian company they would hide them if they had any, it of course would give away their class or status. What I'm trying to say is there was no tattoo removal back then so should a man have one prior to being a sailor, having been a tribesman or the like he couldn't have had it removed.
  10. Oh BE MY VALENTINE! A true pirates Valentine! gold and JEWELS!
  11. LOVE the Chieftans Oooh thanks I'd love that. You are certainly a wealth of information sir. So glad you've found us. Thanks so much for sharing.
  12. THATS GREAT!! ... LOL fully automatic guns
  13. Joe... I believe we have everyone on board in Key West that can and is willing to be (Rum Barrell and Pirate Soul are already on board btw). ....you'd need to talk to Captain Spike or Harry Smid who have lived in Key West collectively over 40 years to get the real big picture of the event and its history. The company I work for is a member of the Chamber and all I can say is...my momma taught me not to gossip and if I can't say anything nice... well you know the rest. Of course I don't always listen to my mother. shame shame. I find that most of the time all that any Chamber of Commerce these days serves to do is to keep the piece between this company and that, and collect their 20% anywhere they can. I have worked with several festivals, events, organizations and companies that were all active members of the Chamber of Commerce, in Key West and elsewhere. They are all the same, red tape machines. There is always plenty of tape to be untangled and managed...so HELP is always welcomed, thanks so much for offering. Please contact Harry Smid or Captain Spike...a willing hand is ALWAYS appreciated!!
  14. Hello Nell! Hope you are enjoying the Super Bowl game today! Say hello to Chrispy!

  15. That blue one is simply stunning. I like the design with the loops and inset stomacher. Similar in design to that long sleeved pink one, I can't imagine those loops are as sturdy as eyelets though they'd be replaceable. Sterling you are a wealth of knowledge on this... what do you think about the overall construction and design of that piece?
  16. speaking of Steampunk Comic... can't wait to see what you do there. Mr. Hand you have quite talented hands...and a wonderful imagination. The comix are fantastic.
  17. I love Folkways collections HUZZAH MOE ASCH!! I have been collecting Folk music of all kinds for many many years and would not have half the collection I do if it weren't for the Smithsonian and Folkways. I'll have to look at the song list. If your interested in great folk music from all times and styles there is a Smithsonian Folkways Podcast on iTunes. here's the address to subscribe to the Podcast: http://www.folkways.si.edu/resources/audio...st/folkways.rss
  18. Is it really such a sin to use some minor items that are pre period?? it could easily have been my great grandmothers. I would think a girl might inherit certain pieces from her mother or grandmother that in good condition she might wear, or adapt or repurpose, especially if the piece was hand made by the family member. I'm not so sure that a style of embroidery or lace making would really change so much in 20 years. I can see clothing styles changing drastically, but little embellishments that had some sentimentality? I'm not so sure those women were that different from us. I have some things of my great- grandmothers that I still incorporated into my everyday wear, scarves and clips, collars, gloves and hats and such, Ok I'm not your average person but I imagine it was more common then than now considering the cost of clothing. Am I wrong??
  19. Hey Sparrow needed turtles to get off the island Disney left him on. With Candi's new boobs maybe she can just back stroke off. still she has to get away from the Cannibals. not likely at this point... red X and all. Poor Candi!
  20. Cheeky I found it here 16th and 17th Century Coifs There are a few really gorgeous examples. I LOVE this one. the flower center left is beautiful.. looks like the center petals are crochet.
  21. I agree.. I really like Dot being that annoying civilian always getting in the way of the crew doing their job...(damn it though... that means I have to make fancy girl clothes - oh well ) I agree the captain should be an amazing leader. When the crew manages to follow through on his orders they are incredibly successful. So have we decided then that I have no physical access to him either?? That's cool!.. If thats so then Ransoms idea of my always looking for him would work and could be amusing, inventing my own conspiracy theories as to why he's hidden and who did it to him and how it happened.. maybe he could be hidden because he doesn't want me or anyone to see him.. some kind of horrible deformity of battle. - maybe it happened while he was away in the far east...maybe the patch monkeys were his first crew. they helped him get home across the big ocean... thats why he has a loyalty to them.. .. also could be why he keeps me on board, even though I cause some problems. I waited for him all that time..and he loves me for it. He missed me all those years in the east and wants to keep me close, he loves me, but he loves the sky and now because of his handicap somehow he's in or attached to the ship and can never leave it so its the only way we can be together. the "That Woman" thing is great!! Chris used to lovingly refer to me as "That Girl" (I kinda looked like Marlo Thomas a little) when we were first dating so its kind of ironic.
  22. Regarding my role as the captains suspect wife...I love that idea! I think you should all be suspicious as to whether I'm his wife. Of course no one will broach the subject with the captain its too uncomfortable a subject, because there's too much evidence. Also, rather than running off looking for him, I often disappear for periods of time, plus I seem to know bits of information that I shouldn't, so there is some evidence that I might actually be his wife, part and parcel to why everyones afraid to broach the subject. OHHHH great idea!!! What if the captain dies at some point? Since he's been hidden for so long, and I have no where else to go, I have found a mechanism to disguise my voice and record commands so no one will know. Knowing the troubles I've caused I fear if everyone knowing he's dead, a new captain will be voted in and I'll be dumped. i love the crew and piracy desperately and want to stay with you so I do whatever necessary to keep my secret. This could also attest to why I'm always spying and butting in... I need to consult with the crew so i can ghost captain properly. I would have to work real hard to cover my tracks too, because you'd all hang me if you found out. This could explain why your all suspect that I'm his wife as well, perhaps I occasionally go too far trying to cover my tracks. Hey eventually when we get tired of that story line you can just kill me off and elect a captain, and I can start a whole new character.
