I like reading Parnell and Niven, but I just couldn't get into that one..... maybe I should give it another try...... Give it another try. It takes some time to build up, but I think it's worth it. There are some very vivid scenes in the last half of that book. In later years I discovered the ship was based on one of my favorite models... the Leif Ericson, aka the UFO Mystery Ship! http://frank.bol.ucla.edu/le.html ps - Pournelle This title rings a bell, I think I'll have to add this to my list.

OK seeing as we're starting in July/August count me in. I'm in Florida curious about how many pages should the book have?? 12 people - 12 months 3 or 4 pages each... I'm assuming about 50 pages should do it...am I right more of less?

MY FEET! Well, with that out of the way...I did have a splendid time. Fayma was a ball and we truly enjoyed having her. We miss our PIP family. The Captain truly enjoyed your poem, Nell. He said it moved him...moved him where, I do not know. But he just a fool for such soft words and tender moments..as we all are. Thank you and all of your crew's help make his day special!

Ok we should name him then, of course, Dear Son, or My Love, or My Dearest Cousin or Brother work too... each family member its only a matter of deciding relationship. I think a thread where we make a choice as to how we are related to him and what part of the world we're in... ie his sister in America, his mother and father in England, his fathers parents in Ireland, maybe his brother at sea on another vessel...etc, etc... I don't want to post the letters on here. I think the special part will be that only the person who buys them has them exclusively, they are the first to read them and the only one to have them. Whats beautiful to me about the idea is that yes you can do your research and tell a bit about life back then and home, but whats special to me is that personal feelings and local gossip can make it really personal and an interesting thing from someone in the PIP family... even more interesting its somewhat anonymous, if your write it from a friend, you could be anyone to him. So I guess we need to decide on a name and an age...and where he's from... did he migrate from another town prior to going to sea...etc... I'll think about it and start a thread about him that we can all contribute to, once we know who he is people can decide who they are to him and then write away. I think it would be a really neat keepsake. Hey every little bit of money counts and this project certainly has little overhead. More like in-your-head

There's a rum bar in Key West where you can sample hundreds of rums...I tried one there it was an awesome rum liqueur and I got the crew hooked on it. RUM JUMBIE!! ....its often a battle cry! LOL It has tropical fruit undertones and is slightly sweet (it is a liqueur after all) it's scrumptious and it comes in a great bottle.... after a few bottles of the JUMBIE your tempted to take Aunt Jemima out of the cabinet and have her front the band. here's the site so you can get a look at the bottle. It's a nice treat once and a while. I'm pretty sure its the sugar content combined with the alcohol that helps to release the jumbies... RUM JUMBIE

How about a sparkling mead? Is that possible? It sounds like it might be good, especially with a flavored mead. Has anyone tried? and how would the process be different in order to get it to effervesce?

Hi Sarah - welcome! Look forward to getting to know you on the pub and someday meeting you at an event!

Hey I just had a thought of starting a bundle of "love letters".. original poetry..and artwork...kind of like the pirate sketchbooks that are going around, bundle them together with a silk ribbon...if a bunch of people each contributed a letter, or poem from a lover, or mother or brother or father to a young man at sea this would be a great little collection of things to have, a piece of the PIP family to read and re-read over the years... Anyone intersted in contributing and adding this to the chest? I have a few poems i want to "send" to the sailor already.

Thanks... you rock! I tried to make some last year for PIP but didn't give myself enough time, and I think I contaminated it changing bottles... needles to say it didn't tase so good and we threw it out. I wanna take extra care with the next batch if I start it now it should be some good hat swapin juice for PIP this year.

Mickey... I'm a beginner and definitely want to try my hand at meade, if I'm going to make an attempt i'd prefer to make a large batch so i can leave a few bottles to age longer as you suggested. What's the best thing to put it in to ferment, and to vent it etc. is plastic OK (ie giant big water jugs) Where's the best place to get supplies... and what do I really need. I see so many recipes and ways to do it... i shall insted trust your experience.

that center lacing is a neat little extra...not only would it help for comfort when your a bit bloated ......could allow for a bit lest bust or a bit more in certain company... great way to go from a conservative tea with the ladies, without drawing gossip... to getting the attention of that certain gentleman, without the need of a friend to help tighten you up... LOL... its the PC version on Candi's hydraulic boobies in the Pyrate Comix thread ROFLOL
