Lead (Pb) in what form was it shipped
Dutchman replied to Littleneckhalfshell's topic in Captain Twill
certainly not period, but i have a stack of piggs behind the barn. they are about 8x8x24 inches long. This seems to be a pretty common size, but no idea how far back they go. Piggs tend to chance sizes depending on the ship. smaller vessels need to take advantage of every inch so some pretty odd piggs get created, where larger vessels can get away with stacking and securing them, then filling the voids with smaller pieces. -

they are often referred to as Quaker guns. Quakers, being the peaceful sort, carried them for intimidation. I had Sutler Jim make one for me last year. We use it for displays and as a teaching tool, when we are in schools where live weapons are not permitted or we just don't feel like lugging an extra 100 lbs around.

it seems the pulling boat is still active navy and is officially a life boat and is used for coxwain and lifeboat training. I've seen video of that boat go- the Explorer is best suited where she is for this venture. If the schedule permits, I'm going to try to get to the send off.

Folks who attended the Hampton Blackbeard Fest last year will remember the red coats that graced us with their presence. They spread out a bit and are now called, I believe, The Naval MAritime Historical Society. Anyhow, I talked to xxxx last week and this is their latest venture. Go guys go!!!! edit* names have been removed till further notice. NORFOLK 4 FEB 2010 - A group of active duty and retired US Navy sailors is planning to cross Chesapeake Bay from Cape Henry to Cape Charles, a distance of 14 miles over open water, in an open boat powered by oar and sail alone. The event is scheduled for May 15 2010 and will be used to raise awareness for environmental issues in the Chesapeake Bay. The group will depart Lynnhaven Inlet at 7 am on Saturday May 15, accompanied by members of the Virginia Pilots Association. The Chesapeake Bay Foundation is planning a send off, where they hope to raise contributions for their efforts promoting environmental awareness. Vice Admiral xxxx, Deputy Commander of xxxx xxxxxx has tentatively agreed to attend the send off. "It's great to see sailors doing things like this in their spare time using their seamanship skills to improve our community and have some fun in the process." The boat being used for this groundbreaking trip is a 26-foot long Monomoy Pulling Boat, which is propelled by oars and a single sail and has no engine. The boat was built in 1954 and carried aboard several US Navy and US Coast Guard ships where it was used in at least one at-sea rescue in 1956. It was retired for training duties in 1981, and its condition slowly began to decline. That is until it was discovered in a trash pile on Naval Base Norfolk and restored by a group of concerned sailors the same sailors who will take part in the bay crossing. "There's no question that this sends a fantastic message" said a spokesman for the Military Sealift Command, which is now the official custodian of the boat "and we are extraordinarily proud of our sailors for taking this initiative." The crew will make their way to Kiptopeke State Park on the Eastern Shore after crossing the bay, where they will camp overnight. They will return to Lynnhaven Inlet the next day, repeating the trip in case anyone missed it.

hey folks, there is an ad for Hatchet Meg's Gourmet Rum Cakes that appears in Pirates Way magazine. It states that the books are available from Amazon. Please purchase them directly from Hatchet Meg at HatchetMeg.com for $22.95- a whole lot cheaper that $39.95 that amazon wants and the $$ goes directly to HM as opposed to Amazon.

ahoy crews, plans are cooking right along for the Holly Point colonial maritime festival/ raid/ pirate olympics (any ideas for a name would be grand), the dates are june 3-7. We have in attendance so far, but not limited to- Blackbeards crew Crewe of the Vigilant Archangel devilmen of Cape Fear and I understand we may have the Plankhouse with us as well. While no one who wishes to attend will be turned away, would the Mercury be able to have a showing to pick up any wayward folks who need a home? This will be beneficial later as there are group activities planned. Also, if anyone is interested in attending but does not wish to participate in events, living history is HIGHLY encouraged so feel free to chime in. In addition if you wish to attend and participate as an individual feel free to do that too.individuals are just as welcome as crews, just let me know you're coming and with a head count please. Food- saturday night is on us. should i try to line up a vendor for the remaining meals- or would folks rather fend for themselves? Saturday night :) a boucan pig roast! plus entertainment is in the final stages of contract. will be grand if it goes through. Greg from Hudson Bay has committed to suttlering for us and I understand Scarlet Scarab is willing to come as well. Blanket trading is allowed but please keep it period and reasonable. Friday will be a workshop day for us. Each crew is asked to present a one hour or so living history presentation. So far Vigilant has offered a course on cannon safety. Saturday will be the festival/ olympics day. Each crew is asked to provide two volunteers to host an event for the day. The events will be geared towards maritime skills of the 18th century. Each crew will draw a starting lot and we will round robin events from there. i'm looking for additional input on events so feel free to jump in. so far we have..... Navigation with a land based excersize knot tieing small boat handling an engineering problem anchor heave folks, this is our venue to do with as we please! so chime in with any ideas

found the info below as it related to early 1800's material. not period, but gives some ideas. Showing the Length, Breadth, and Strength of Flax and Cotton Canvas, as used" in, the U. S. Navy. Together with the Number. Length, and Breadth of Strips cut crosswise and lengthwise, used in the Test of Strength, and the Average Weight required of them, before received for use. FLAX CANVAS.
