  1. IBC be the best around these parts.
  2. Ok the award goes to Capt. Gary of The Royaliste with over 3300 posts. I scanned the the members list and it seems he has almost 3 times more posts than anyone else. (wink, I know ya been down mate.) Nearest I could tell Tales, Pirata and Mad Maud. are running around 1800. Congrates Gary. You get the has way too much time on his hands award. ... um... oh kay....um... it was right here... ALRIGHT! WHICH ONE OF YOU LOW DOWN BILDGE DRINKERS NICKED IT!
  3. Alright chum! Come alive and listen up! Ye got some decidin' to do. Do ya wants to be a fancy Dandy pirate, a historically accurate pirate, what time period or do ya's be pure fantasy? Once you have these things in that bildge covered 'ead of yours. Then you can start on your kit. Because once you get your "status" decided you need to decide what type of rank ya be holdin'. Captain, Boatswain, Quartermaster, Gunner, deck hand, or Millitary status. Once you have that you can focus on the clothes one would have in that time period, social status, success rating, etc. For example if you were a deck hand in the 1680's you wouldn't have a cleaned and pressed silk shirt with ruffles and a waiste coat. Now ifinit be a fantasy character then the skys pretty much the limit. Now that's not to say you can't change station and rank as you go along. But how much can you afford to put into your kit? I always ses start simple and work up. Unless you got a chestfull of duccats and price doesn't matter. Either way there are some great links in the plunder section on the board and also on me own site Pirate Resources
  4. Well ask yourself this. Do you have a gut? Do you want your character to have one? Sashes have the same effect as cumberbuns. Unless your a stick. They make you look bigger.
  5. Maggie your in 7th or 8th grade? In Texas 7th grade is devoted entirely to Texas History. Of course we covered Jean Lafette which starts most of us here on our piratical journey. When you hit a world history class so to speak. Ask the teacher at the begining of the year if he/she can expand on the pirates when you get to that section or ask your current teacher. Tell them your interests. You would be suprised as to how they may help you. (After all, sometimes you can't just spot an incognito pirate) Do the same thing with your english teacher. They may know of some great books. Most teachers realy do want to help anyone that shows an interest in a subject. Get a sponsor and start a school pirate club.
  6. Hey Tori. I've delt with boss wench for years. And after many a customer or friend complaining my (now-ex) a I redesigned them to fit better. Boss wench operates on the small, medium, large and Damn! priciple as opposed to pattern sizes. Carie still makes them and there is some good information on her site Costume Carie. Generally we have been able to increase cup size between 2-3 cups, reduce the waiste by two inches and you can still, breath, move, ride and fight. All you generally need to do is send her the fabric with your measurements. She makes all kinds of period clothing. Specializing in custom work.
  7. Don't want a saggy butt (lol). You can always modify the pattern. When I get a new pattern I always trace it to another piece of paper or have a over sized copy made on a blueprint copier. Then use the copy. I have breeches, slops, knickers, kilts, etc. I strive to be as accurate as I can. Within my budget. But also take in a comfort factor. If I have to alter a pattern slightly so the clothes fit more comfortably. Then that's what I do. If I'm not comfortable with what I'm wearing I'm not going to have a good time. Remember, just because a pattern exists doesn't mean it's 100% accurate. Many clothes wear altered to fit the wearer. Allot of what pirates wore was in whatever prize they took or could buy or barter for. So they may have to find something close and alter it.
  8. The Del Tins are one of the oldest Armories in the world. Their forge has been hot since the 1600's. I remember when Museum Replica's came out. They almost only carried Del Tin and Chris Poor. Then sold out to Atlanta Cutlery and went the way of the cheap scape
  9. We throw a Buccanners Beach Bash very year that is adult only. We take over a beach house in Galveston party all weekend and then start planning the next year. We always make sure there is room for those that want to bring a tent ect. Now it is no way a perfect backdrop but something may be worked out. We throw a BBQ that is for the families. Once a location is established the rest is easy. But it's location, location, location. Galvestons water isn't the prettiest. It's a huge sandbar so the water is kind of a green brown. But Crystal Beach on the Bolivar Penn. is not bad and you move further around the coast line and it clears up. I'm up for helping to organize and by all means when our dates are set for the next bash everyone is invited.
  10. Between the English and the Dog I like the Dog. Just because it's not quite as common. Albion has some nice ones. Though the Snaphance is nice.
  11. Which flintlock? That's like saying which motorcycle should I ride. Depends on what style, shape and weight you want to have. If you go to my links page at the Texican Privateers site I have a ton of links to different makers and dealers. I'm partial to the Charliville or Queen Anne. Also depends on what you have to spend. Some of my links go to custom makrs that make to order and run upwards of 3k. Cherry's has some of the best prices.
  12. Someone in another thead I can longer find was looking for a good source for a spyglass or sextant. I located these lads. Stanley London
  13. Here is something to consider as well. There is a perception in re-enacting/portrail that because you are portraying someone who lived a century or more ago your gear has to look old. Remember. The gear to them would have been new or just used. Not really old so to speak. Gear may have been worn or banged up, slight rust maybe depending on how well the person took care of their gear. But everything was a tool and kept and used as such. So what does that mean for us? Well, if you are playing a Pirate for (just picking a year here) 1650. What's the background of your Pirate? How well has he lived and how successful has he been? Is he a captain, boatswain, quartermaster or just a deckhand? What would he be able to afford/steel or have issued to him by the Quartermaster as his part of a prize. Look at your pirate and decided his basic income/living level. So now, would he have a bright shiny new sword or one that was worn? Used or new pistol? Would he even have one? Maybe he only had a pin and knife. Just something to think about.
  14. You had many a Pirate in the North sea. Norway, Germany the Baltic areas. Just not as "colorful" as the south seas pirates.
  15. What effect has pyracy/pirates had? Ever heard of an attorney. Ain't no more dangerous a pirate I know of t'day.
  16. You are correct. Where as most people think of Flintlock pistols as the most used weapon the muskets were far more common. It is always better to pick your opponent off than have to face him with steel in a boarding. Volley of cannon and musket be very affective before you get there.
  17. This may help. you would just need waiste to floor.Chart
  18. Any day of the week my dear. Any day of the week. Oh, I've had my share of those as well. But it also depends on the production company. Working for the mouse you expect a "better form" of treatment than say you would with Orion. Allot of it is precieved as "Oh, I can get away with it." I don't think I will ever forget one actor who was too close to a 3 lb. helicopter hit. (pyro for those not in the know). It was a timed shot and I yelled at him. "Hey, you need to move. Come over here." Nods and waves "No really, you need to move. Come here." Looks down his nose and turns back around. "Hey, you ignorant, self righteous asshole. Are you that stupid or do you take lessons." He gets real pissy and moves towards me to tell me off when the charge goes off when the truck goes by. Singed his neck hair. All of a sudden he wasn't so mad. Star power doesn't always mean smart. One reason I never listen to a "Stars" political opinion.
  19. The real life dreams, lovely, nice people are: Henry Winkler Harrison Ford Bete Midler (although her stupid dog was nothing but trouble) Sally Field Nick Cage Viggo Mortenson (Hidalgo is ours).... I've worked with Sally on "Woman of Independent Means" she is pretty much just regular gal. Very nice to work with. Now my list Patrick Swayze - "North and South: Book 1 & 2, Roadhouse" - Pretty nice Sam Elliott - "Roadhouse" - Talk about a Pirate Heart. Man can he drink. Peter Weller - "RoboCop 1 & 2" - A bit snobish but ok. Nacey Allen - "RoboCop 1 & 2" - Pretty plan. Bubble gum popper. Kristy Swanson - "The Chase" - No better word describes her... Bitch. Charlie Sheen - "The Chase" - Nice guy, boy did I get the low down on Ginger Lynn. Argggg. Denzel Washington - "Glory" - A bit snobish but polite. Morgan Freeman - "Glory" - Hell of a nice guy. Great story teller. Tom Cruise - "Born on the Fourth of July" - Egotist Nichole Kiddman - set of "Born on the Fourth of July" - Genuinly sweet lady There were many others along the way. For the most part they are regular people on set. Off set is another matter. My favorite has to be Sam Elliot.
