Not the Irish, The SCA. Most kingdoms are real heavy Roalty, upper merchant class. Yes there were many an Irish sailor. But few who were "big time" pirates. Not that there weren't any, just fewer than other countries and not as well documented. And she was a pirate during Elizabeth the I. Again which timeperiod.

Define Ancient. 1500's, 1400's, 1600's? There be allot of references out there for pirates. But as Wartooth be telling ya. Irish will be somewhat limited. There were more crew that twir pirate than say captains and beings how your society don't have too many persants or sailor class you may be hard pressed. Good topic though.

First thanks Bess for the image. If you have pictures please forward. On the sharpening subject. time, water, rust all effect and edge. In fact the one thing that will dull a knife almost as fast as cutting paper is hot water. Causes the metal to expand and dull the edge. So before a battle I'm sure the were working on steel. Now as for a new cutlass or prize or trade I'm sure it would depend on the condition when they found/aquired it.

Some people think scars are cool. But I consider them mistakes. In the 20+ years I've been doing stunt work I have never seriously injured myself or another. (knock on the ol cocconut) Every scar is an oops. I have a few that were just funny. Caught on a nail head sliding down a tin roof for Showtime. The tape is funny. Bang, drop, clang on the roof, slide, stick. "ouch!" "Fall off the roof already." "Shut up I'm stuck." Now here's one I'm realy proud of (ziiippp)......

Do you want to do stage combat or fight. Two different subjects. If you want to play at stage combat take a stage combat course. If you want to fight find a true school. There are many schools or fight instructors out there. I never recommend to people to learn the way I did. I grew up around true fight masters. Rapier & Dagger, Broad & Bastard swords & Cutlass. We used real steel and real edges. I have the scars to prove it. But we were taught to fight. I do choreographed staged combat and make a decent side living at it but I can not "spar" with someone. A true fight follows no rules, hits or point system. I have been talked into sparing and doing tournaments a few times over the years and lost every match. I would have won the fight but not by their rules. See the difference. Decide at what level you want to play and then take the right heading to make it happen.

Good looking piece. Say's he has 5. No close ups of makers marks so I can't trace them. I wouldn't fire it without it being x-rayed and tested. How much do you want to spend on a collector's piece? Some TLC to the wood and Iron it would look great.

I like the dog. But it's purely from the fact... I just like it. Both are great locks and shouldn't give you any problems. It's a personal choice thing at this point.
