  1. Message received.....and replied to, shipmate.
  2. One last price reduction to get these out of my house. Everything is period accurate; the only thing they don't have are button holes. I really thought the pub members would be interested.
  3. I'll take 100, lassie. They are indeed the best buttons I've ever found. :)
  4. I've lowered the prices to see if I can get any interest. I REALLY need to sell these items.
  5. I couldn't post these in the original post, but here are the back views of the coat and waistcoat:
  6. I made this for my son's school assignment (the teacher had NO idea what she started when she asked the kids to dress the part of the Famous American they chose ), and now that it's done I'm offering them to my pyrate friends. This is the completed outfit: These are the pieces for sale. They fit a men's LARGE. Frock Coat $55 Waistcoat $25 The buttons on both are non-functional; the waistcoat uses snaps to keep it closed. If you buy both, I'll throw in the shirt for free. UPDATE: Prices lowered (again); need to sell for Christmas money.
  7. I ordered mine for myself and for my older cabin boy to wear for his Famous American assignment for school. He chose John Adams and I made him the outfit, complete with period shoes. Now that he's done with them, I'll be using them for my "Pyrate Casual" wear. :) FYI, the frock coat and waist coat are for sale. Men's size LARGE.
  8. "Any society that would give up a little liberty to gain a little security will deserve neither and lose both." - Benjamin Franklin
  9. Hope your mom is doing okay, Capn Bob. I guess when I chose Free Shipping for my order that meant I had to wait an extra amount of days. My estimated delivery date is Monday, November 17. It's funny to think this movie would probably be rated TV-14 today for the violence shown. Back when it first aired on the Wonderful World of Disney it was "family entertainment" which generally meant a G rating. I wish we had more "family entertainment" programs like this but with the advent of cable we have segregated our viewers in to neat little packages with not a lot of cross-over.
  10. Let's keep this on topic, folks. This thread is specifically if you have fabric you want to sell or trade or if you're looking for something.
  11. In 2003 the then-president of my local Star Wars club found this site and asked for a list of good pirate movies because the club was celebrating Talk Like A Pirate Day; I followed the link to the site and have been "hooked" ever since. Actually, I should say "Hook'd" because when the live-action Peter Pan movie came out in December 2003 I fell completely for Captain Hook (played by the incredible Jason Isaacs). I have to agree that this is the most intelligent, creative, educated, and conversational group I've ever found on the web. I thought it ironic that during the Presidential campaign of 2004 this board had one of the best political discussions I've ever been involved with. We had everyone from the far left to the far right but everyone made their points without arguments, flaming, name-calling - and we're supposed to be a bunch of pirates for cryin' out loud. A toast t'the Pub and all within!
  12. A lot of people in San Diego County voted early at the Registrar's office. I did my usual drop-off-the-cabin-boys-at-school-then-over-to-my-polling-place. No line, in and out in 5 minutes. :) I know long lines sound daunting but I hope you scurvy dogs show your pirate spirit and stay the course. It's actually exciting to see so many people coming out to vote. And Starbucks is giving a free, regular coffee if you show them your proof of voting.
  13. It's about BLOODY TIME the Mouse finally did something about this movie. I been waitin' since it came out in VHS in the 1980s. I have the perfect actor for Dr. Syn - none other than our own Geoffrey Rush, portrayer of Captain Barbosa. In Black Pearl, after he scares Elizabeth by standing in the moonlight on the deck and showing her he's a ghost he then slams the doors, drinks a bottle of wine and then throws it away laughing like a maniac. The laugh sounds very much like the Scarecrow's. I've been making that comment since the DVD came out.
  14. Very well said, sir. I nominate Callenish Gunner for Secretary of Education!
  15. A very interesting topic. Here is my contribution. I have a "gifted" child and a special ed child (I say that between them I have one normal kid ) so I have seen all aspects of my school district at work. The "No Child Left Behind" act is nothing less than governmental blackmail. Either schools improve their scores or they don't get funding. One friend who is a high school science teacher said that schools that are already outstanding don't get funds either because they haven't "improved". My biggest concern is that teachers are expected to be nurses, psychologists, counselors, and ministers on top of teaching these kids. To add insult to injury, they have little or no power to dictate what goes on in the classroom; all that power belongs to administrators who generally have no idea how disruptive it can be in a typical class. Parents need to go back to being parents and teachers need to teach. I always say that if my special needs child had gone to elementary school when I did (1960s), he would have been fine. But this program to push they kids to read in Kindergarten, write paragraphs in 1st grade, and teach Algebra to middle schoolers is outrageous. All you end up doing is frustrating them if they're not ready. Right now my special ed child is in a class with multiple grade levels (1st-5th); this lets him work at his own pace where he's 1st grade in writing but 3rd grade in math. I think that sometimes the "one room school house" had the right idea with work tailored for each student's abilities; plus the option of peer tutoring where the older kids can help the younger ones.
  16. I be needin' a pair o'them low-heeled shoes on the first page, lass. I sent you a PM because yer e-mail ain't showin' on this upgraded pub.
  17. You can always take a wire brush and sandpaper to them to "roughen" them up. That's what they did for Indiana Jones' jacket in the original movie. If the fit is snug (I think you mentioned that in your first post) you can use Spray Stretch on it. My feet are wide for a woman and before the stores carried wide-width shoes I used spray stretch on all my work shoes (back in the day when we wore heels and suits; thank God for casual business wear!). Any shoe store should sell it.
  18. I've ridden out a lot of layoff and bubbles bursting, but when my child was diagnosed as autistic my consulting business was closed up and we cut our budget to the bare bones to live on one income (in expensive Southern California) but continue with out-of-pocket therapy costs. Now with even more therapy and treatments required and gas going through the roof, it's hard to find even more places to cut. When a car needed servicing we had to rack up credit debt to pay for it because we can't be without two vehicles. When you live close to the edge any little disaster can wipe you out. There is a very fine line between being okay and being homeless. Everyone's experience with the current economy is different.
  19. Glad to see I'm not the only one who referred to the ghosts as the "peanut gallery". It was a very clever piece of the movie.
  20. I'm going to pass this along to my Star Wars friends who are also pirate-lovers. Our group visited the hospital in February to bring a little Star Wars excitement to the kids. We're hoping to go back at least once more this year. (And no, I'm not dead yet. )
  21. I'm having River Phoenix flasbacks. Last I heard it was considered an accidental overdose; has anyone heard anything conclusive? (I know he was in The Patriot but I was too busy watching Tavington chew up the scenery. )
  22. It was probably nice to do the visit without all the media. Just him and kids. Hospital visits are some of my favorite events; although as a parent it can be hard to see these children hooked up to IVs, in wheelchairs, half-sick and hurting. One visit I was asked to go through the chemotherapy room because I was in Jedi and could navigate between the beds. That was the toughest visit.
  23. Ye scurvey dog! Ye be lookin' fer a new berth when I ain't even finished wit' ye! McDrago and I be dressin' as Jedi in our off-hours. But I has lured him to the pleasures of piracy. Welcome aboard, me former First Mate.
  24. I never had the opportunity to see the stage play, but I loved the darkness of the film interspersed with some sick humor. Too bloody to let my kids watch, but a nice adult film. Johnny Depp is one of the greatest character actors of our generation. He did a superb job in this movie. Helena Bonham Carter was also impressive. Even Alan Rickman pulled off the singing bits. My friend and I were chalking up how many of the actors were also in the Harry Potter films (3 - Alan Rickman, Timothy Spall, Helena Bonham Carter).
  25. It definitely looked like a great event from my drive-by. Next year I'll get my kit together and "play" with you all. That way I'm sure to get a parking spot. (I was tempted to tell them I was part of Stranglehold's crew and park in the lot reserved for encampment folk, but since I wasn't in my gear I don't think the lot attendant would have bought it. )
