  2. Remember that things "Pickled" also helped prevent Scurvey...many kegs of Pickled Vegitables made it onto ships manifests...and would last longer than fresh fruit....course ya would have to eat 'bout twice as many pickles as fruit

so how am i preventing scurvey on May 2...????....i'll be getting thoroughly "pickled"... :P

  3. lookin for reference....but seems I read that it was great sport to set up the new young officers...when they first come aboard to let them have a go at the Blunderbuss....in which the crewe would often have loaded heavey...and watch in great amusment where the new officer...being a huntsmen would put to the shoulder...and subsequently thoroughly dislocate their shoulder....then to be explained that it was to be fired under the arm...but up against part of the rail or deck

don't quote me...still lookin into where I saw that tidbit

now from practical use...a shotgun(with no sight) up to the shiulder has a tendency to fly high....bringing down (hip high) could bring it down considerably

did I mention i'm still lookin for a reference???

  4. Starting to think it would be a good idea to bring some of my crew to Hampton now, just in case. Or at least to have someone to hurl in your direction so I can run away.

    won't help...we've got lots of rope :D

See Cap'n....i gots yur back...i'm the one holden the knife.... ;)

  5. I think this is the link you were thinking of M.A. d'Dogge.

While a bit further out, there is also the Santa Maria pirate weekend, which is a great place for starting out, as it is open to re-enactors, and more entertainment focused pirates (although there is a preference for historical gear).

Thanks thar Micky...i had not foergotton yurs....just thinkin within a 4 hour circle of the lass...but he be right...the SANTA MARIA another good venue with freindly piratres to get yur feet wet...and get to sleep(them that sleep)on the boat herself!!

  6. to the person who asked,I am in Sycamore,Il. it is a small town

HA!!!!....i twas born an raised in Kingston (12 miles north of ya)!!!!!....and you thought Sycamore was a small town....HA!!!!

tho i know not any Pirate RE enactments in the GREAT STATE of ILLINOIS.....there are several rendevous and other period timelines events round then great inland seas(of corn)...that are Pirate freindly

course to get yer feet wet....head to the Lake(michigan)....Port Washington Wisconsin( close to ya)....or PIKE RIVER RENDEVOUS in Kenosha WISCONSIN....as well as Pirates of Paynsetown (indiana)

Fort Chartres(mid- Illinois) seems to be open to period pirates as well...theres a link here abouts somewhere from those that are a goin

  7. Two of my favorite charities are St. Jude's for children, and perhaps the American Cancer Society. I love children and can hardly bear to see them suffer, and I have lost many members of my family and friends to cancer, so that is particularly personal for me. Cancer is a dread enemy, and anything I can do to help battle it, I will!

    I second St. Jude's

My wife is a St Judes Survivor...she had A.L.L.(acute lymphomic lukemia)...was given 2 weeks to live at age 14....she was part of the 1st group to survive...and 4 years later...was cancer free...now some 20 years later....BECAUSE of ST JUDE Childrens Research Hospital...she was able to finish College...become a wife(of a pyrate)...and a proud mother of 2 healthy children

ST Judes dosent charge the famlies of the children....and survives on donations and fund raisers...and truly lives the motto: there is always Hope.

soooo....tho not Nautical based....always a good charity to sign on with....now back to the shadows lurch i... ;)

  8. Have Heard thru the grapvine....that the "Friends of Fort Taylor" and the "Fort Taylor Park District" are trying to iron out a couple of sticky points....tryin to get an agreed upon plan of action....so anything else at this point would be hear say or speculation....but word should come down the pike Sooner than Later i imagine....

everyone stand down at ease...til we all hear OFFICIAL WORD.....

  9. the biggest compliment we have got so far......that NONE of the scripted parts that the Producers brought for us...to make sure there was a flow to the show...ever made it to air....

everything that made it on the show...was improv'd or off the cuff...the producers have said that there was sooo much that simply couldnt fit do to time constraints...and are seriously considering a 2nd show...of just outtakes

  10. what i tend to see(staying away from numbers) is an attitude or trend...to create characters based on what the person would "like to have been"...and are simply unable to do so in their "other" life...hence the big percentage of "captains" to "dregs" in the communittee...rather than what they "would have been"

i know in our group...we strive to show the differnces of the time, rather than the sameness...class structure etc..hence the events were some are duded up and others are dirtied...instead of competting one way or the other.

personnally i Like to Blame....the people who Hired the Event

what was there reason for staring the event...was it to show true history? pub crawl? sell Jack Sparrow Figurines? or hot pirate Babes Calanders?(i own 2)

the ultimate goal of the event...will usually dictate the personas that attend...more living history? personas? skits? music? demonstartions? clothing? et cetera et cetera....

i personally wouold like to see more events.were the push would lean to the more....true history...but as for now...those events seem few and far between

till then...i will be forced wear many hats...fancy and dirty..and something in between

  11. you know what the great thing about this show is ??? it lends a tremendous amount of credence to reenactors of the gaop...and with some of the fine talents in front of the camera, it should be a grand success...

i dont know if i would go that far....we werent privy to the editting...hard tellin how we will appear!?!?

we might have set the Pyrtae Re-Enactor Credenace back about ten steps....

for example....i only yelled at the Producers and Robert(the chef) once....for comming up behind me and putting a (albeit plastic) gun to my head...for a bit he was trying to do

i raised my eyebrow(THE eyebrow)...and gave him the "DeathLook"....he immediatly dropped it...turned ...and did the bit with DeadEye instead..who reacted more to his liking....

later i explained that ...he had crossed a line...a cardinal sin...in the reenactor realm....tho we use guns and swords and are Pirates...that we ALWAYS USE THEM SAFELY...for we understand that kids will see us...and want to emulate us...and therefore ALWAYS press weapon saftey...

i had actually got quite verbal with this to all the prodiucers and the cheffs....

soooooo....watching the promo...thats on for the past week ...at least 20 times a day....

shows Robert(chef) comming up behind me ...poiting the gun to my head...eyebrow raising....cuts to other scene...

    WTF...

the ONE thing i demanded...got put into the promo.....sheesh... <_< ....so...that i think it will be fun to watch and make fun of many of us....not terribly confindent in how much this paticular show will help our footing in the re-enacting world
