  1. They actually (if what I have read is correct) developed simultaneously... The "true" flintlock was developed by the French, and the Doglock is an English/Dutch development. The Flintlock probably became the standard because of aesthetics (guessing here). Although (again guessing) the more compact size of the "true" flintlock could have been a part of why it won out as well. I haven't used doglocks too much, but it strikes me that there may be more of a chance of the dog-catch causing the safety to "go on" than the half cock of a "true" flintlock..... Again, please not that this is all my opinion and I might be wrong on a number of things...
  2. Sorry you had some bad luck that almost prevented you from coming... But I'm very happy to hear you got whatever it was sorted out and are still on!
  3. I have been scouring through th London Gazette's of the period looking for more information, but because the archived issues from this period were done by poor quality OCR, the text search is almost unusable.... You can find the web site HERE Anyways, I did manage to find the following quote dated to March 1711 ON THIS PAGE about a deserted soldier. I had to retype the info as the OCR software did a nasty job with this. The original is pretty badly faded, so I had to do some educated guesswork on some of the words.
  4. Well, if I roll into Key West by that time and there is still an empty slot, I will head straight for it... But it would probably be best if a slot not be held for me, as it is very up in the air as to whether I can be there by that time. Cheers!
  5. I can't believe I almost forgot to confirm on this. Count five of us (MichaelSBagley, Kate_Souris, Nick S., Ashley F., and Mark G.) in for the following meals. Morning Meal Friday Morning Meal Saturday Evening Meal Saturday Morning Meal Sunday And the five of us would be maybes for Thursday Evening Meal, it really depends on what time we roll in, but I am hoping/guessing we will be there in time for supper.
  6. I would happliy take the long step of the short plank.... But I won't be rolling into Key West until late Thursday afternoon or perhaps (pending traffic or other delays) not getting there until Thursday evening... What time is the contest? Not that it is likely I can be there anyways....
  7. Hey Greg, It was the plain natural Linsey-Woolsey socks that I was after.... I'm a bit uptight when it comes to stripes...won't wear them in real life or as a part of my re-enacting gear....
  8. As far as weapons go... my zombie bug out bag would include a sword.... Guns run out of ammo, and Zombies reproduce quickly... Besides everyone know the only way to finish a zombie is to remove it's head (or blast it off) .... A good gun would be required as well just in case I got cornered by a zombie mob.. But the sword would be the primary means of dealing...
  9. I don't know about pirates, but I have found plenty of evidence for soldiers of the period wearing lace trimmed hats. Now the lace I recently trimmed my hat in isn't chalk white, but more of an off white cream colour, because I am not a big fan of chalk white for anything period and prefer to use off white for anything like that... But taking this discussion a bit further, I think if you do a search on hats in Twill, you will find that there seems to be more evidence of sailors and by extension pirates, of wearing wool knit hats than cocked hats (tricorns)... So really your mileage may vary since this is "The Thieves Market" and the focus here isn't always on authenticity....
  10. Wife and I both received ours last week as well. And we were both wearing them around the house yesterday as we worked on additional stuff for PiP, and they are comfortable and seemingly durable. Mary, do you have any additional stock? And if so, will that stock be following you to PiP? One of the people we are travelling with tried mine on, and they fit him well, so he is considering a pair...
  11. Hey Greg, I know you used to carry the linsey-woolsey socks/stocking, but you had run out in August or September when I was trying to order some... You had left me with the impression that you were not planning on carrying them any more, but if you do order some more in, you can guarantee I will buy at least one or two pairs of them at PiP... Cheers. Also, I don't know if you carry them or not, but flints... I've noticed a lot of scrambling for replacement flints (pistol, rifle and musket sizes), so it might be worth your time to bring a good stock of those.
  12. Why did the Wizard of Oz suddenly pop into my head? Willaim and Amanjiria and Billy, Oh MY!!! I am truly going to miss the opportunity to meet William. Aminjiria, well "I hate the guy" anyways ... Billy will be sorely missed.
  13. If he does, I will definately buy some from him... But I was looking for a pair back in August, and Greg was the first person I called... Unfortunately at that time he did not have any... Now this is a few months ago and things may have changed (and I really hope they have), but Greg left me with the impression he would not likely be getting them in again. Greg sells the Linsey-Woolsey socks as well.
  14. My personal favourites stocking are those on the below link... Which only come in "natural" (basically think brownish-beige oatmeal colour), but outside being a boring colour they are very comfortable and lighter than most wool stockings sold, and are made of more period correct fibres than the cotton ones (if one bothers to care about fibre content). They ship fairly quickly, specially if you phone your order in... Google "JAS Townsend", "Smoke and Fire Company" or "G Gedney Godwin" for other more colourful options, but expect a heavier, thicker and more warm sock. Hamilton Dry Goods - Linsey-Woolsey stocking.
  15. $1.58 per gallon in the south of Columbus where I live... $1.69 up on the North side where I work... I think lowering gas prices will inspire folks to get out more, which will likely lead to some moderate frivolous spending, which will be good for the economy. I may be a hard core cynic, but I don't see the price of gas as an economic indictor, but as an economic moderator.
  16. That rocks!!! I'm a little amazed and a whole lot impressed that you found a close to comtemporary peice for the GAoP. Congrats! I can't wait to see it.... Used on someone other than me!!!
  17. I was reading through the black powder regulations, and all seems good there, except that flash guards seem to be mandatory on all weapons? Am I reading this correctly? Or is that the case only if firing in military style lines? Neither my musket or wife's pistol have flash guards, and I would rathre take care of this sooner than later if I need to. Cheers
  18. Smoke and Fire Company has a similar selection to Jas Townsend at comparable prices.... I've shopped both Jas and Smoke and Fire and both are good and ship fast....
  19. Hey all, I'm on a few message boards for the F&IW era and other later colonial boards as well... One thing I have seen come up a few times over the last few days that I thought I would share here (as it might be of interest), is that the company "Loyalist Arms and Repair" whose official web site is Loyalist Arms web REAL web site.... Anyways, apparently someone operating as "Royalist Arms and Repair" has copied the Loyalist web site, and is engaging in questionable business practices knowing full well that Loyalist may get the blame for it. I do not have the dopplegangers web site or URL, but I thought I would share this as a consumer warning as I know many here have done business with Loyalist Arms in the past, and many of us plan to do business with them again.....
  20. I'd be interested as well... I've not participated the last two years, now have I paid close attention, but the concept does sound good. Cheers.
  21. Ah Ha1 The Black Syren has struck again...

  22. Mark attempted to fax his form through first thing this morning, but later saw an error message on his fax machine. He is unsure whether the error was related to his faxed form or perhaps another fax sent by someone else after him. Could you please send a confirmation email to either him, or me at "michael AT re-enactmentevents DOT com"? If the fax did not go through, we would like to get it in ASAP as he is already a day later than what Harry said would be okay (there was no fax machine in the hotel he was at while on the road). Thanks again for your help and patience regarding this last minute addition!
  23. Could you please add Mark G. to the Mercury Crew? He'll be travelling with Nick, Ashley, Kate and myself!
  24. That depends on how high your wanted the turned up edges to be... Most that I have spoken to about it only trim the rough edge of the hat (~1/2"?) With your hands? AS you hold the hat over the steam, just bend and curve it to shape.... Hold it in place until it restiffens... Someone else would likely be better able to answer this... After steaming, and from what I have inferred from what others have done, after all edging, trimming and stitching has been done (which most seem to do before the steaming even). Hope this helps.
