  1. Congratulations!!! Now I think I need therapy, can you help? I know, I know, there is no helping me.... I'm a lost cause... LOL
  2. As a note, many of the old links are from before the Forum transitioned... And so the links are quirky, you have to manually delete the part of the URL/Address that says "forums" so this -> http://pyracy.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=8564 should be edited to this -> http://pyracy.com/index.php?showtopic=8564 in order to make it work That said, here are the links already edited for you. The Boots we wear Sandals and Ankle Boots in the GAoP Boots
  3. I don't want to drag this topic off course.... But I too am an occasional visitor to the SCA. And quite honestly, while the SCA credo states, pre 1600... The "best effort" clause seems to over ride that... And while going post period (I've done up to 1700 in the SCA) may preclude you from any SCA awards, it does not preclude you from participating. Many in the SCAdians would rather see well done post period garb than the abundance of "within SCA period" stuff that is poorly done. A bit more back on topic, for 1630s you would really want to look for information on the "30 Years War" in Europe.
  4. This one would also work.... The advantage of the short coat and skirt is that you can get away with NOT wearing stays as long as you keep the jacket buttoned up. That means less work in the short term, and then you can work on your stays in a more leisurely time frame. I personally like the bodiced gown second most for the earlier time frame. The mantua is probably my favourite of the three, but I tend to view it as a later period thing....
  5. Aminjiria, I totally think you should go for something like that. Is it just me, or does it look like the French soldiers depicted in this block print dated to the 1650s are wearing Justacorps? And this is just a neat looking pic from 1667 that I thought I would post as well.
  6. I'm not sure what Aminjiria will make his out of, but to me it looks like a leather buff coat as worn by many armies of the mid-17th century (which would very much still be in use by the time 1668 rolled around). I was thinking of going the more 1650-166o military look as well, but perhaps basing it on some French images from the time (assuming I can find any in a reasonable amount of time),
  7. Looking at BlackJohn's list inspired me to throw in my favs... And to be honest with a few differences, I could have almost cut and pasted his list. # The Matrix # Conan the Barbarian # The Princess Bride # Labyrinth # Star Wars # Leon "The Professional" (with the "Fifth Element" being a close runner up here, but I thought only one Luc Besson film would be better) # The Usual Suspects # Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon # Hero # The Killer (the early John Woo Hong Kong film) # Momento # Aliens # Blade Runner (original version!) # Lord of the Rings # Immortal Beloved (I am a HUGE fan of Gary Oldman which makes me want to add "Sid and Nancy" as well....) # Moulin Rouge (although Lurman's Romeo and Juliet could easily fill in here as well) I think that tops the list or I could go on all night....
  8. How is Robbie my fault? No way, I'm just a simple humble and INNOCENT (choking on laughter) servant of his majesty...
  9. Hey just because there are pictures don't think for a second that you can pin that on me!!!!
  10. It's spelled Canuckistan..... Duh!!! How are you gonna find me and dispose of me if you can't even spell the Country? running for the border now.... Lalalalalala...
  11. Greek as well? I must have been pulling one over on you love... I'm Half French Canadian (who barely speaks French) and Half Scottish-Canadian... No greek in this bod... Maybe a Geek, but no Greek. Or are you taking "Souris" to be Greek? It's a French word... Look it up, it makes me all the more funny.
  12. I think my Canadian accent is the sexiest thing talking.... But then I may be slightly biased there... and a lot of people seem to think that I often don't know what I am talking aboot. On a more serious note, mild hindi accents have always given me the tingles... Particularly the accents gained from an expatriot of India who has gorwn up in England... How specific is that?!?!
  13. My research seems to indicate that drop front breeches are a much later period thing... They start to appear by the 1740s, but don't become common until later in the 18th century... That said, I honestly don't see that as being a detail that will show up much and can probably be hidden if that is what you have.
  14. Hampton is definately on our list for this year. As for the rat of a king... It's a dirty job but someone has to do it, elsewise you pirates would get too unruly...
  15. Hey Captain Jim, happy birthday to you!!! I just poked my head in here for the first time in forever, and realized just how many birthdays I have missed recently... Virtual drinks for Jim and all of the rest of the Natal Days I have so poorly regarded in recent weeks!
  16. As always it was an honour to serve under you Sterling... I hope to have a few more uniformed soldiers to fill out the ranks for next year, that way I might get a chance to play pirate for a change... More seriously though, I have some ideas to expand and build on the Red Coat impression that I hope to try out throughout the year at other events.
  17. So you mean I'm doing this all wrong? I thought chicks all love a man in uniform?!?!? Time to change strategies again... LOL
  18. It's hard to tell, and this is why I always drop "persona talk" when in Twill talking about technical thing... But I think what you are trying to say is correct. The Kercheif is generally a thin material, but the steinkirks and cravats are usually MUCH thinner which makes for a much smaller knot and extra fabric left over for fancy bows or to twist into a steinkirk through a button hole. That's the best explanation I can come up with.
  19. Sophia, that is brilliant!!! I love Kaylee (who doesn't?)! So many good costumes here in this thread... Although I am picking up a distinct superhero slant with some notable exceptions...
  20. Hurricane's gear was probably the best Buccaneer era stuff I saw at PiP... And from reading his posts over the years, I have come to trust him as one of the most knowledgable guy at the Pyracy Pub for info on the era. Loyalist Arms Shoes and Boots The boots on the top of this page or the shoes just below them are both appropriate for this type of iompression.... The downside is that ordering from Loyalist is slow, and even if you ordered today, there is no guarantee they would get to you in time for this event. There is a thread Here in the Thieves Market that was bumped yesterday where Zeph (on page 2 of the thread) converted some thrift store shoes to look like pretty decent period shoes. The images have since gone the way of the dinosaurs, but the discussion may help. There are a few web sites I have seen out there with similar instructions with images, but I have lost the links.
  21. Hey Mickey, last year when I started a dialogue witht he organizer, one of the first things he said to me was this event "was not your skull and crossbones" type of event. (or something similar to that). The bottom line is that they take historical accuracy fairly seriously. Having been on this forum for a few years now, I have come to realize that there is a fairly wide range of what is perceived as historical accuracy. I would strongly recommend reading the garb standards that Hurricane posted the link to earlier in this thread, and reading them with a CONSERVATIVE mindset. No one will ever fault you for overshooting on historical accuracy, but relying on marginal or debatable stuff is where many have troubles when it comes to re-nactments. I'm not trying to be discouraging, it is do-able... and there are plenty of people here that can help with lots of good advice. My first suggestion is going through old posts in the Twill area of this forum focussing on Buccaneer and 1660s to 1670s style garb (which is fairly different from the later Golden Age stuff). If you have a copy (or access to a copy, perhaps your local library) of the book "The Buccaneers of America" by: John Esquemeling (sometimes spelled "Exquemeling") many editions have a decent amount of images (wood block prints) that represent what would be typical of the clothing of the time. My biggest suggestion is aim for basic commoner/working class garb, you can always add fancy stuff later, racing against time for make something fancy on the first go is where most people run into walls over this kind of thing. Since Patrick Hand is talk about a Buccaneer camp at PiP for next year, and this event is drawing attention this year, it might be a good time to bump the Buccaneer thread Patrick started in Twill... Edit - Okay the old thread has been bumped recently, here is the link for ease of reference Buccaneer Project Thread
  22. There was an explanation on this forum somewhere that answered this question... I know because I asked that very same question about 2 years ago... I took a look for it last night, but couldn't find it. I'm guessing it was in a question asked in an off topic thread. I do remember this much though, for the neckercheif, tie a square knot. If you don't know knots (and I didn't know this one at the time, heck I still know very little about knots), do a google search (or a search on you favourite search engine) and look up tieing a square knot, or how Boy Scout's tie their Kercheifs. I tie my steinkirk the same way (with a square knot) and then twist the two ends together and tuck them in the top most buttonhole of my waistcoat (see above image of me as a red coat). Tieing the various permutations of the cravat is an art that would take me too long to explain on a forum, not that I have even figured out that many of the variations. Hope this helps. Cheers!
  23. Linen is not itchy at all! In fact I find linen to wear better and after a few washings to be softer than cotton. But to more directly address your question, it can soak up sweat, but more often than not, I soak mine in water before I tie it on to keep me cool. There is also this old thread on the topic that has tons of cool information and great pics! Old Thread on the Pub about Neckercheifs
  24. That would be me as the Green Lantern, with my wife as Supergirl, and her best friend Jen as Batgirl. I think this is from two or three Halloween's ago.
