Oh you won't hear me complaining of the swag I got... I'm very happy with it all! Besides I know that I have way too much piratey stuff already , and so it would be very hard to buy me a piratey gift, so non-piratey gifts are pretty much preferred.

Well... There were no parcels listed as being from the fat man under this one's dead evergreen... But there was some great swag from those who I can only assume are minions of the fat man, or at least in cahoots with him. I got a great book about the Duke of Marlborough, John Churchill (by Winston Churchill no less)... I'm currently tearing through the book I was in the middle of in order to get to this one faster... other than that it was all modern stuff... well at least until my Pirate Secret Santa gift finally arrives.

This photo (By the amazing Tony Callahan) pretty much sums up my Red Coat portrayal and gear. I think the only thing I have left that I intend to add is a set of hemp canvas gaitors, and perhaps different shoes.... Oh and an earlier style musket.

One saying I have always been fond of, is... It hurts my brain to try and stop enough of it from working to relate to that sort of mentality.

So many quips I can respond to this with, and I'm so going to get my butt kicked to hell and back for any and all of them.... So I'll show some retraint and limit myself to receive two but-kickins... But the gun would probably be warmer... Why take my gun when I can sleep with M.A. d'Dogge's instead?

Just received mine yesterday.... I ordered two of the brass and one in silver, and they are awesome! Now if I can only get some shoes to add them too... Or maybe I should pay Haunting Lily to steel me some shoes, she's really goood at that!

Hey! I ressemble that remark!!! That little trick is what makes me such a die hard re-enactor! The ability to actually get some sleep during the 24 hour a day buzz and hubbub of an event was a very hard earned talent!

Gack, I'm so wrapped up in trying to get ready for Searle's Raid on St. Augustine and for the PA/MD Border wars I haven't had time to think that far ahead... Now I think you have given my poor little noggin' one too many things to be excited about. I might become over stimulated. I might replace the local village idiot (or am I that already?) On a more serious note, do you have room for a Red Coat (or I could play pirate for this one) and his wife this year?

Here is the thread on the other forum that I recalled.... Aparrently there is comments in some of the Whydah documentation to it being a holster and not just fragments. Although there is no word as to what physical evidence there is to support the Hemp as a holster and not just fragmetary wrap. Pistol Buckets discussion on the Pirate Brethren Forum

I have quite a few large coffee cans sitting around. I've been saving tons of them for a project I've been meaning to get to (but of course haven't yet). I have more than I need squirrelled away, and no fear of procurring more (with the way I drink coffe ). If they are needed let me know. That said, if you post the pattern you are using for the paint, I can paint them and transport them to PiP next year to save sending empty coffee cans around the country aimlessly. Cheers

I've seen the Whydah exhibit twice, and I don't recall anything about the holster. There is also the book "Expedition Whydah", which I have, and haven't read in depth (I've read choice passages as I have felt the need). The National Geographic book is better for pictures, but the "Expedition Whydah" is better for technical details, having both makes for one great book. That said, the holster thing may be based on extrapolated information.... Let's say they found hemp fragments covering most of the pistol, but there were not enough fragments to form any solid picture. Well saying the hemp fragments were a holster is a reasonable guess, but because they are fragments, no solid picture of what said holster looked can really be made now can it? This would be my best guess on the holster without doing further reading. I have seen some images someone posted of a recreation they made of a hemp holster (although I think it was on the Pirate Brethren forum). I will try and have a look for that later, and see if there are any more solid leads there for you. Cheers.

I use both Facebook and mySpace... Although i use mySpace more often as I like it better. I too am a private person, so I tend to keep the stuff I post on either fairly ambiguous, or no-specific... Although I do occasionally blog on mySpace and take full advantage of the privacy settings for blogs that are more personal in nature (for those that don't know, you can set your blog posts to: Anyone can read, friends only can read, "preferred" list only can read, or diary... Keep in mind you define your preferred list.) One thing about Facebook, I don't add apps... In fact "Apps" are why I use mySpace more than Facebook, although now mySpace has added Apps, but I have made sure I haven't added any "Apps" to mySpace.

As much as I have to agree with all of you in hating snow... There is something I hate more than snow that is related... COLD!!! It is sooooooo cold here today in central Ohio, that my tire went flat. It's too cold for me to have a proper look at it to make a guess as to how it happened, but I'm thinking it was likely that either the extreme cold cracked the seal on the tire, or froze the tire itself causing a crack... There is an outside chance that it might have been a random act of vandalism... But what kind of vandal would be out in that cold?!?!? Oh, well, no harm no foul... The worst thing to come of this is a missed day of work (meaning more to catch up on tomorrow) and a loss of a days pay....

To play a bit of the devil's advocate here... Most of the images (going from memory here) in "The Buccaneers of America" seem to depict them with shirts tucked in... But to counter my own point, those images were done in the 1680s, and I believe they were done by European artists that probably never saw real buccaneers. Personally I think the un-tucked shirts give more of the longhunter style buccaneers look, whereas the tucked in shirt gives more the "on campaign" look of the former soldier style buccaneers... But then that is based solely on the feeling it gives me and not any real fact.

Not in the least, it's all in good fun Mickey. In fact if I remember through the drunken fog well enough, a few of those in on this conversation are former scouts and/or still active as scout leaders (or whatever)... But as for scarfs, many of use have neck scarves or what-not that we are rather attached to, and wearing two neck cloths would just look silly.

I'm not one to pay much mind to the User Rankings... But I glanced at mine today, and noticed that mine had changed..... Due to a few sight gags done through posting some pictures... I have earned the title of Mister Oatmeal... This explains it... As much as it can be explained... I burst laughing in my cubicle and had the few others that are working late stare at me like I'm some sort of lunatic.... Okay they already look at me like that, I guess they were looking at me like I might actually be a lunatic going off the deep end rather than the harmless one I think they belive me to be. To pick up a conversation that started on another thread... Diosa and Hurricane, if you are able to (I don't know what the "season" or time of year is like for them), but if you can bring coconuts, I will happily cook Jamaican rice while at the Searle's Raid event. I'll bring a huge bag of rice and a good size bag of beans, they're both good on their own even if the coconuts aren't ripe(?) enough or available. As you mentioned, I will try and remember to remind you closer to the event. Cheers!

Not that I have found in living in central Ohio for two years, although I have there is passable stuff in neighborhoods I am reluctant to trod into.... Which is why Mr. Wobble is such a hero to me. I don't get back to Toronto nearly as much as I would like (where the is a plethora of good Carribean food places) Diosa, if you bring a few coconuts next year, I would happily prepare them as a side to a meal! Even more so if it is as a side dish to Mr. Wobble's night of cooking Jerk! Heck if no one wants to eat Jamaican rice, I'll crack them up and just drink the coconut water... I must just remember to bring a machate or other heavy blade with me (or sharpen my dull axe) as my side knife is far too small to deal with the husks or hulls.

Wow, that may be one of the earliest recipes for Jamaincan style rice that I have seen. Modernly it is called "Rice and Peas", as some time along the intervening centuries it became common to cook the dish with blac eyed peas (beans), although these days although the dish retains the name "rice and peas" it is more commonly served with red kidney beans than black eyed peas. This dish is AWESOME as an accompanyment to Jerked meat dishes.
