It's a great idea! There is a Pirates on mySpace thread somewhere... I use both (but prefer mySpace), and would happily join a PyracyPub Facebook group as well...
-
Nothing to see here folks, now move along....
-
I would be willing to, although I do have to plead guilty on missing the Sunday meeting... But otherwise I have no problem with that, it was a pretty easy task.
-
If my memory is correct, the event was on the weekend of March 7th to 8th... So you should be fine there... but i will check the pamphlet I got from William when I get home tonight to make sure.... Jessi, I'm not sure how long of a drive it will be for you, but if yopu are within 4 or 5 hours of St. Augustine, you should be able to make this event without taking time off... I only need to book time off as it is an 11 hour drive. Rev. Sam, it would be great if you were around and could come out for this one! Please not I orginally posted Feb. 7th and 8th... This event is in March and NOT February.

Oh now you've made it a sport... and with Mae's offer to pay me a dollar, I can now be a professional sports player on this deal... It's only a shame I have to wait until I get home to finish this deal. I love you Cheeky! And rest easy in knowing that my posting this photo will likely result in my own untimely demise as well.... But c'est la vie, some things just must be done!

We would likely drive in if we go.... A mere 10 to 11 hour drive is nothing compared to the trip to and from Key West. The wife not buying into going is the only thing (barring real life interferance) that would keep me from going to this one... And if I recall correctly, the wife was inclined to this one, so it should be a doable thing. I guess at this point my going only depends on getting the friday and monday off of work for travel time. I hugely appreciate the offer of help though!!! You may want to chat with Red Jessi about helping her though... I am going to try helping her with the earlier period garb for this event, but if you or someone on your crew might have an extra canvas tent to loan her, that would be awesome!!!
-
I have some suitable revenge for her as well.... a certain comprimising photo of the mistress and a certain red coated soldier.... Hahahah
-
Hey Diosa, We did discuss meeting Red Jessi there, but we have yet to sort out the details (and confirm we are going). I started a thread for discussing that event Here on the Events section of the pub.

This is an event in St. Augustine Florida in earlty March. The event is hosted by Searle's Buccaneers, the direct information about the event can be found ON THIS WEB PAGE which hasn;t been updated from last year quite yet... But although I wasn't there last year (I wanted to very badlly), I doubt much would have changed for this year's coming event. I have a flyer for this year's event at home, i will take a look at it tonight and add any details from that here for those interested. While I can't guarantee I am going yet, this event is pretty high on my list of hoping to make it to.

Who said anything about killing? Oatmeal and black powder doesn't seem very lethal to me... But boy do I imagine it will smart real good.

Hey Aminjiria, I'll help you get him... That's my wife in the pink petticote in the first pic as well!!! And we're going to do this right, I've got ALL of his muskets, we'll get him with his own weapons... Filled with OATMEAL!!! BwahahahahahahahHAHAHAHAHAH (in case you haven;t heard or figured it out, M.A.D'Dogge REALLY hates oatmeal).

"Captors And Captives: The 1704 French And Indian Raid on Deerfield " by: Evan Haefeli and Kevin Sweeney On Amazon I beleive that is the one... I picked up my copy for $7 from the local local overstocked book reseller, if you have an overstock book seller nearby you may want to check that out. Most of the information from that book was derived from the first hand account written by Deerfield's minister, which is also available in print (but not as easy to find)... I can't recall the author's name or the proper title for that one at the moment. Edit - There is also The Unredeemed Captive by John Putnam Demos, which reminded me that the period first hand account written by the local minister was titled "The Redeemed Captive, Returning to Zion" by John Williams.... Dutch, if you're paying attention to this thread, this is the book where I found references to Capotes in our period.

If we wind up crossing paths in St. Augustine in March, bug me about sword play... I've been working with wife and the other couple (Nick and Ashley) on the same methods used by the Archangel Crewe, which I hear are fairly compatable with what many of the other crewes are using....

I have some links at home (I'm at the office today)... But I am certain you will find out more if you do a search on "War of Spanish Succession". Most of the war took place in Europe and the war was named for the "Spanish Succession" there.... Probably the largest events here regarding that war were the Deerfield Masacre (Deerfield, MASS in 1704) and the battling over Port Royal Nova Scotia against the French there.

The simple sailor's neck cloth can be seen tied around my neck in my photo on my sig line graphic. I have seen this style (the square one) tied in many different ways... It seems to run the entire length of the period for commoners and working class folks and sailors alike. Couldn;t tell you when it started though, just know it is fine for the entire GAoP. The Steinkirk came into fashion in the last half of the period (some time in the late 1690s? I think) and can be seen in my picture of me as a Red Coat I'll post picture of the bowed cravat or draped cravat later tonight... They are mostly early part of the period (they start to fall out of fashion as the Steinkirk becomes popular).

Hey Nick, You might want to introduce yourself... Absolutely no one here will have the slightest idea who or what you are until you attach a profile picture and introduce yoruself.... NS_477 says absolutely nothing about who you are.... Cheers. Glad to hear you made it home Patrick, sorry about the delays. Glad to hear the other who were travelling distances as well are starting to roll into home. Oh, and also a BIG THANK YOU to those who found the camera bag for Nick and Ashley and kept it safe and made arrangements to have it shipped back!!!

It was quite literally a fender bender... There was a small crack in the plastic coating over my fender and a chip out of the corner of the plastic cover over the turn signal on my vehicle, the other vehicle had some scraped paint and a few plastic clip snapped. The bump happened in a parking lot at a whopping speed of about 2 or 3 miles an hour.... The 24 hour drive has me more shaken up than that little incident... Although I would very much like to hear if Patrick made his flight or not... We did only get him to the airport about 20 to 30 mins before his flight was scheduled and he still had to make it through security... In his garb...

Okay, There were a few different styles used throughout the period... The Square one what I refer to as a Kercheif (not sure if it has a proper name, maybe "neck cloth"?) Cravats were long and narrow (mine is 6 feet long and about 9 inches wide. They were tied a few different ways from what I have seen in period images, bows, or looped over (the best way I can think of to explain them in my post-PiP state) Then there is a Steinkirk, which is a Cravat that has the ends twisted together and tucked into a buttonhole. Hope this helps.

Assuming there is a Mercury Crewe and said crew are on the beach, both wife (Kate Souris) and Myself will be rejoining that crew if they will have us.
-
Okay, I am not trying to make assumptions... So if I explain anything you already know, please do forgive... One thing I orginally did wrong that might be causing you some grief, is cutting the slits before doing the stitching. You should always sew the buttonhole stitching completely before cutting the slit. Another thing I do is draw line using fabric markers/fabric chalk or even a pencil if neither of those are available. I then sew around the line using the line as a guide to where I will cut and ensuring I sew just a hair away from the drawn line and not on the line so when I ccut the line for the slit I won't cut the stitching. Hope this helps.

Columbia's Revenge in French = Revanche De Columbe (Pronounced "REV-awnsh duh COLE-umb") It would have been great to watch the reactions to you in the top hat in the mall...

I'm not sure Lady B.... I didn't follow the updates on the web sit last year... But from my vague memory, updates were posted on various forums a hell of a lot more quickly than they were on the web site... In fact I got more info about RF last year on various forums than I ever got from the web site. It's a good event, and I plan to go again this year (although I won't be sure of attending until much closer to the time).... But the event could definately do itself some more good by more dilligent updating of the web site. You know, after typing all of this, I seem to recall almost this exact conversation last year...

I bought a new pouch of Captain Black's Gold for the trip.... And may buy a second pouch of another type of pipe weed for variety... As I am not a regular smoker, I doubt I would ever finish either pouch before they went stale, so I am more than open to sharing...

Another good book on the topic is "The Flintlock: It's Development..." By: Torsten Link. You can usually find it on eBay for under $20 ($10 in many cases), and I have noticed many copies in the local overstock cheapo bookstore chain, so that is another place to check.

Bump... Okay folks, I have bought 200 of these buttons in the past, and I have used them all (I literally used the last ones yesterday), and I would VERY much like to order more... But of course that depends on others being interested, as I can only commit to another 200 at this point (although I am seriously wishing I could commit to more)... Why should you want any? Other than to help me get some more of these? Well I have been shopping vigourously for another source of period correct brass buttons, and the cheapest I have been able to find is for 85 cents each!!! The mere 30 cents a piece Mary Diamond is selling these for is an AWESOME deal, for FANTASTIC buttons!!! So come on folks, I am sure there are more here that are interested!!! Please! Pretty please with sugar on top? This has been a selfish and shameless plug for someone else's goods. We now return you to your regularly scheduled programming.
