Below image, lovingly borrowed from the Baltimore Rangers web site, depicts some English Soldiers of the 1690s. Look on their belts... Now do keep in mind that these are land troops (dragoons?), but it does show that powder horns were carried and used.

As an "and" to Sterling's post (which is all VERY good advice. There is a reference in the Admirality Slop contracts to check'd shirts. Now I am sorry I couldn't dig up the link, but there was a really in depth conversation about this years ago on the pub... I believe only one piece of pictoral evidence to support checkered shirts was found and it seemed to show "crossbar" or "windowpane" style checks, whereas the more gingham style checks are the easiest to find in linen. Now one piece of evidence certainly doesn;t mean that the more gingham style checks would be wrong, in fact a year or so a couple of guys on the pub 9who I haven't seen around in a while) did their shirts in the more gingham styled checks, and I thought they looked great! I think the guys were in the same group/crew/geographical region... I think one of them may have posted here as CasketChris... regardless, I think checked shirts are very underrepresented and look cool... I've been thinking of doing a checked shirt for myself for sometime, but it has been one of those projects that has constantly been pushed aside... I think Captain Jim has a checked shirt as well that is pretty cool. But on a more practical note, a plain bleached white shirt would be the most versatile and easiest to accomplish.

And they arrived safe and sound today! Still no sign of Ransom's.... stupid postal service!

Now that I have finally awoken from the coma from being clunked on the head with a belaying pin (thanks Jim! ).... The eBay account we have to use for the auction is limited to 10 day auction lengths (which is why there is a delay in starting the auction) aparently the 2 week auction was an option, but it would have cost extra... and since this is for charity, we would rather have the money go to the ship rather than eBay. So the auctions will last 10 days, and will begin this weekend (likely Sunday?). This will give bidders all next week, the weekend of the event, and it will also allow the participants and spectators to see the items first hand (they will be on isplay at the event) and a chance to bid on the items during the few days after the event. Thanks to everyone for their donations and support on this. There are a lot of great items going up for auction, this is going to be a great way to donate to a great cause and get something out of it, so please bid on the item(s) that you like! I want to specially thank Bo for coming up with the suggestion in the first place (even if he doesn't see this post) and for the great chest and other items he sent! Without him, this idea may never have been conceived. Looks for the linsk to the various eBay auction items on this thread, and everywhere else I can think of to post them (mySpace, Facebook, Tribe, other forums etc. etc. etc.)

As of yesterday I had not received them.... And now I am getting suspicious, as this seems to be the second small parcel someone has sent me that has not arrived and supposedly lost in transit. I may have to make a trip to the local post office to see WTF is up?

Although I didn't make it over to the smithy, I seem to recall hearing that there was someone working it this past year. A few people had hand forged vent pick/musket tools they said were made and bought from said smith working at the forge. I had wanted to get one for myself.... But distractions prevented that. Is there anyone who can confirm this rumour?

And all the time you were one of those damnable Pirate Hunters!!! Welcome to the Dark Side, mate. Animal Nah, I'm a fence jumper... Some events I play the pirate, at some the Red Coat, some the pirate hunter (when those blasted Archangels will put up with having me around ). To be completely honest I showed up in my Red Coat on Saturday, and wilted in the heat (it got a rather unseasonable high 80s this past weekend) and then Sunday I dressed the part of a pirate in my nice cooler linen sailors clothes... So it was a very bi-polar weekend for me.

IMPORTANT ADDRESSES and other important infor for the event. Please Private message me for my cell phone number and/or home number if you think you may need it. The street address of the Santa Maria is: Santa Maria 25 Marconi Blvd Columbus, Ohio, 43215 PLEASE NOTE: Map Quest takes this address as being street front location, to actually find the ship you will have to go into the park (down the stairs or hill). The ship should be very obviously able to be seen from the street location at this address though. Our home address for those who need to find us is 3786 Martha Jane Place (Building 6) Canal Winchester, Ohio, 43110 I am still looking up the addresses for parking (and trying to settle parking arrangements), I will update this post later when I have the info. Close Parking Here The parking can be seen on the above map as being at the End of Gay Street in front of the square building. (Between Marconi Blvd the very end of Gay Street before it turns right into North Ludlow Street) Please note Gay Street is one way and allows the only access to the parking lot. This parking lot IS NOT accessible from Marconi Blvd. Also note we are trying to discourage particpants from parking at this location as much as possible (except to load and unload) as this will be the closets parking for spectators and we would prefer the parking be available for spectators.

It was probably me Michael. I've made several purchases from hemp traders and I love this place. Good quality products, reasonable prices and great customer service. All of the materials for my seabags, ditty bags, lanyards, etc..............I think we have every size rope they carry by now. They have turned me into a hemp snob :) If you do a lot of rope work, once you go hemp there is no comparison to more readily available products. No matter where you get the hemp from. Anyway, I highly recommend Hemp Traders. I was going to say it was you and/or Edward... I just didn't want to call you out if I was wrong. And since now I knnow where the recommendation came from, and since I have touched and felt their hemp (when you guys showed me it), it is awesome stuff!

Damn, that is an awesome job! You look great!

Never fret Mr. Tignor... While I haven't spied another one for sale recently, I do see similar deals pop up on the various forums I am on every few months or so... Since there was interest, I will try and remember to make a point of posting such finds here when I stumble across them. Cheers

THANK YOU JACK ROBERTS FOR FINDING THIS!!! I usually pride myself on my ability to navigiate the search function of this site, and not being able to find this drove just about around the bend. I finished the first pair past night, tonight I finish the leather goods I am working on and draft the patterns for the next two pairs... And if I have time I will post pics of the first pair. As a side note, I added the link to this one to Patrick's Thieve's Market Clothing Index in my last post there where I cleaned up all the links so they work again.

Bump... I've been looking for the thread where Patrick Hand did a fairly good almost step by step on making slops (or open kneed breeches if you prefer)... This is the thread closest to what I can remember finding, but the images are missing, and I am not sure if this is the correct one or not. If anyone knows how to find the thread I would greatly appreciate it! I've done a few searches for the info both in the "Thieve's Market" and "Captain's Twill" areas, but no luck so far. I'm about 90% done my first set of slops, and I have two more sets to make... If I can't find Patrick's good thread (or if someone else can't help me find it), I may take some pictures of the process and attempt a second rate tribute to Mr. Hand's tutorial to help those who have asked me about slops lately. Cheers

Hat of Puritan Persuasion Query
michaelsbagley replied to Ivan Henry aka Moose's topic in Captain Twill
And I love that hat! Below is proabbyl the best picture of me in the hat in question at Searle's Raid back in March. If you sort through the images in This Photobucket Gallery you will see plenty of more pics of the hat from other angles. -
Sword Suggestions and other hanging questions
michaelsbagley replied to Ivan Henry aka Moose's topic in Armory
Thanks Michael, I'll owe you a few beers (or rums) when I see you at HBBF. :-) For regurgitating all the same answers other people here provided to me when I asked all the same questions a few years ago? Nah.... But I will happliy tip a few back with you if you really want to. -
Okay, as Trish and Shannon were in town visiting this weekend, this has been changed, they made a gorgeous wood mounted tooled leather chess board (instead of the mirror frame). Pictures to come, but this thing is beautiful! I've also heard some rumours of a hand knitted cap (like a monmouth cap) being donated by a friend of Mark and Jennie's from Wisconsin (?). Another item that has been added to the lot is a belying pin with snazzy leather holster from the Pub's Sutler John (thanks Jim!). Not directly related to the chest, but we were at the "Ashville Viking Festival" (pretty much a mini-Renn-Faire with a Viking-centric theme that is still open to all types including us pirates), anyways, we are at the Ashville Viling Festival handing out flyers to promote the Santa Maria event, and there was a lot of good interest developed (thanks to the Viking organizers who gave their blessing for us to promote at the festival). This coming weekend we will be promoting the cause at the OSU Renn-aire (Ohio State University Renn-Faire).

Sword Suggestions and other hanging questions
michaelsbagley replied to Ivan Henry aka Moose's topic in Armory
The swords from Loyalist Arms on the bottom of This Page while slated as a 1740s model, is almost identical to a 1720s model from the books "Swords and Blades of the American Revolution" (by:George C. Neumann) The same book also has another sword dated to the 1690s that is again alsmot the same except for the fact it is has steel fittings instead of brass. I think the main differences between the 1740s model and the earlier models is the pattern of the actual hand grip (going from memory since I don't have my copy of the book with me at work). Or perhaps it is the fact that the earlier ones have wooden grips instead of metal ones? But any way about it, the differences are subtle enough that they probably aren't worth worrying about if you like the style overall... Otherwise, there are other options out there. I think Callenish Gunner sells this sword or one just like it if you would prefer to buy from another pubber. -
Sorry you're not going to be able to make it Lady B! Constance, I thank you so much for lending us your men-folk for the weekend. Any food you send will be most definitely appreciated. It's too bad the whole fam damily can't come! On that note, it is just a couple of short weeks away... And if those coming could please start posting if they are still coming, hoping, unsure, or something has come up, it would be greatly appreciated. We just had a handful more sign on (who are rumoured to be bringing a canon!), so our latest numbers have an attendance of over 30 pirates, most of whom intending to sleep on board. This count does include the few that have had to back out so far. So unless we get a lot more people backing out than expected, it will be a very full ship! Mark G. is working on some basic safety guidelines for the event, most of it will likely be the usual stuff that most attending should be familiar with, but any newer people to the scene will be taken aside and have the basics drilled into them. The one item that will likely differ from most events is that we may limit which decks can be fired from. Basically reserving the poop deck for test firing throughout the day, and we will likely clear the quarter deck for the battles both days and only permit specatators on the main deck. Please post any questions here, over the last few months I have recieved a fair bit of private correspondance about this event, and while that is cool, it has led to me needing to repeat some stuff. Also know that we are aiming to start the "Dead Man's Chest" auction in the middle of next week on eBay. Links to all the items will be posted, there were a fair number of late submitted goods that will be auctioned off, including some really cool stuff! We are intending to set up the auction to end a few days after the event closes to give attendees and spectators a chance to get home and bid on any items they like. The items will be displayed throughout the event. I think I may have put too much info here, but hey, I ramble, it's what I do.
