You're welcome! And since we are on the topic of buttons, below is a picture of some passementerie buttons made for me by Diosa and crew... For a coat that will not likely get made until August because of my current project list.... There were more of these buttons in the auction for the Santa Maria event, and I think they went for way too cheap, someone got a really good deal on those!

On the same link I posted above for cloth covered buttons is a demo on making passementerie buttons, which while not the "Death's Head" or "Dorset" buttons that the flat discs or rings are used for are another form of thread buttons... a Style that was very common throughout the 17th century. Here is a link on making Death's Head buttons that was posted on another forum by Crazy Chole Black (who also posts here from time to time). And another link to a different demo on making the same style of buttons (some times multiple perspectives help). I have seen a link(s) posted here about making dorset buttons, but I can't remember where to find that. Hope this helps.

Being VERY bored at work.... Very slow day at the office... Thanks goodness the supervisor is being incredibly generous and letting us leave a couple of hours early for the long weekend... And then it will be off to pick up the 11 small swords I just purchased.

linkity link link I leanred from the diagrams and instuctions about two thirds of the way down the web page on the above link. I also use wooden bisquits bought from the local hobby store rather than pennies as it keeps the buttons lighter so they pull on the fabric less.... But I think Patrick said that he has had good success with using pennies.

Every waistcoat I have seen of the period (whether archeological sketch or photo of extent museum garment or period artwork) shows waistcoats to be long all the way around. The short backs is a very later thing, perhaps not even until the 19th century (?). That said, while I do not know of any evidence first hand, I have heard from people I tend to trust on the subject that sometimes inferior fabrics were used on the backside of a waistcoat, to save money.... I've never thought to make one this way, well at least until I had researched the matter more myself or seen some evidence to support that practise Cheers

I believe the Port Washington and Hampton events have generally fallen on the same weekend... I believe (although the Archangels will definitely speak for themselves on this account, as I am not a member) the drift from Port Washington to Hampton had mostly to due to the consistant weather problems of Port Washington (and perhaps "prospects" at Hampton being better). I seem to vaguely recall a comment by one of the Archangels about the half of the group that can't travel as far as Hampton still going to Port Washington, but again, that is a vague memory and may be incorrect. Feast of the Harvest Moon would be another good alternative... Although I am commited to a late 17th century non-pirate event that weekend, to my knowledge there isn't a great deal of pirate events conflicting for that weekend. I think perhaps an ongoing discussion would suit us all good, and perhaps the various rpirate re-enactor groups in the mid-west might be able to all agree on an event for next year to as universally as possible back and go to... There are plenty of options... It's a matter of working though which has the fewest scheduling conflicts (there will always be someone or or a few someones) that can't cant make it... It's the nature of the hobby.

Well Thomas, a great idea in theory... It's just too bad it isn't an event that a good many crews from the Mid-West are going to (that I know of). Problem with Port Washington is that it is the same weekend as Blackbeards Festival in Hampton, and many from the mid-west journey east to Virginia for that one. The Pirates in Paynetown event in August would be a more ideal time for such a meeting as it probably has the biggest turnout of crews in the MidWest... And heck we'll be there (The Scioto Pirates) wereas we will not be at Port Washington

First off, happy belated birthday!!! Secondly, it's more about seeing you and spending time with you than the gear... and you gear is more than fine enough anyways, we're not that picky about gear. But I can understand dwindling vacation time and having more events you want to go to than time to go to them.

I hate posting vaguely like this... But I very strongly recall a line drawing image from the early 1700 (the year 1710 comes to mind) that clearly showed some form of framework ladies undersupport for a gown... If I had to guess, the drawing made me think the item was made of caneing or some such similar thing. I can't for the life of me remember where it was posted, but I think it was CrazyCholeBlack that posted it if that helps.... Likely in the Twill section of the pub, but who knows, there is so much cross over between Twill and the Thieve's market it might be either. Again if memory serves me at all, the image was a market style image with many other items contained within it. Hope this might help steer you in the right direction, sorry I couldn't be more specific.

The food in Ohio is a bland as the landscape... If we want anything good we have to have it imported... Which is easiest when people visit from out of state and bring it in with them!

As of now, it looks like we will be rolling into Hampton mid day on Friday (noonish +/- and hour or so), so joining the rest of you for dinner would be nice, as we at least Kate and I are not planning on the ball, I haven;t heard from Mark and Jennie about their decision regarding the ball yet, and I have yet to talk to Trish and Shannon abotu it. First off, would it be acceptable for the pressed men and women (basically the Scioto Pirates) to join you guys and gals for your meals? We will happily contribute and materials, time and efforts that we can. It will be Mark, Jennie, Trish, Shannon, Kate (my wife) and I joining you. Secondly, when do we have to break camp and get out of Dodge? Is a Sunday departure neccessary? Or is an early Monday departure an option? I don't mean to be pushy, but the sooner we have answers the better, we are getting into the nitty gritty of organizing ourselves for this trip. Cheers!

Like we would have one of these without you after how good you and Lady Constance were to us last time!!! IN fact the rule for you, is you only get to come if you bring her along this time. Or maybe to make things fair, this time she can come and you stay at home. (just kidding, we really want both of you here)

Your willingness to come is the biggest help you can be of at the moment (and THANK YOU for that!)... The hurdle for a weekend long event is that there is a wedding booked on the ship... So we are seeing if we can arrange for something else for everone to do (like a ball) while the wedding is going on Saturday evening... Assuming the arrangements can be made and the director of the ship is on board (and she really loves us for all we have done) it should be a pretty small hurdle to overcome. It may mean promptly tidying the ship and vacating it at the end of Saturday for most of the evening, which would mean for more work for everyone... But hey it could work.

I know people are getting sick of hearing about this one already.... But.... We are currently TRYING to arrange that the September edition of this event be an all weekend deal as well. We have a few obstacles to get around before we can firm that up, but please do keep that in mind if you had a great time and would be willing to come back out for a weekend, or come out for the first time for a whole weekend... Also IF we can arrange for the September edition of the event to be all weekend, we will most likely be trying to work an evening ball into the deal as well... Again please keep in mind this is all very speculative and tentative right now, but we are trying... The dates for September will be Talk Like a Pirate Day (Saturday September 19th) with the POSSIBLITY of Sunday Sept. 20th as well (and maybe Friday evening as well).

Good suggestion, I've been meaning to do that for weeks but have put it off out of laziness.

I think the fact that all three pairs of those boots are depicted with stirrups speaks volumes about the use of boots in our period.... And to be honest, the second and third image in that set looks more like shoes and gaitors than boots in my opinion anyways...
