  1. My heart goes out to Midnight and his family, and I sincerely hope everything comes through for him and his son recovers.
  2. I honestly couldn't tell you, perhaps Nate will speak up (he is on this forum but onyl checks occasionally), or perhaps someone who has been to the event can speak to this? My best guess, is it is a reasonably lenient event.... I think the obvious pop influenced stuff is not appreciated, but all reasonable attempts at authentic garb are accepted... And I see no problem with any of you and your families stuff not exceeding that mark by a long shot!
  3. I should have just posted everything this morning.... But. since I am absent minded.... The Ship's boat has been repaired and is serviceable again... So we will be able to attack the ship from two boats (assuming Mark G is bringing the Firefly again, which I am fairly certain of). The ship's boat fits three comfortably, but can manage four.. Mark's boat fits four comfortably, but we have had 5 in it... So that is a maximum of 9 floating attackers (unless we can get another boat involved, which is a possibility). The other thing is a web site Event web site. While the web site still needs work, it is there... If anyone has suggestions or ideas for it, please let me know. Still trying to work out details on the ball, but a new suggestion was brought up this past weekend that is pretty good... But we will see. Again another reminder, to those who may be willing to donate something to the cause, we are now trying to collect items for the Auction, we've collected a handful of items already, and have a few more pledged to us... So this is shaping up, but more help is always welcome and very much appreciated! More media on this event... on The Experience Columbus web site, a travel web site focused on the city of Columbus.
  4. Woohooo!!! It'll be good to see you all(?) again.
  5. Managed to get out and hand out pamphlets for this event this past weekend during all the big 4th of July celebrations... Between Mark, Kate and I, we handed out almost 400 flyers, wish I had have printed more and had the energy to walk the parade... I could have handed out WAY MORE.. Mark really did the lions share of the work with this one as he walked the parade handing out the pamphlets we gave him. But during the parade, I did manage to get interviewed by a member of the local press... and made the front page story of the biggest local newspaper (no photo thought ) Columbus Dispatch article I doubt this story will stay active long, so the link may not work if you are reading this weeks or months down the road.
  6. Before this thread dies and gets buried into obscurity, I just wanted to ask if there is anyone that was in this round who has NOT received their cards? List of Participants 1. Michael Bagley Got em 2. Ransom Has em 3. J8ksdad Has em 4. Sjöröveren Has em 5. Pew Has em 6. PyrateLeather (Clay) ? 7. Patrick Hand Has em 8. Canibal Chrispy Has em 9. Brig Has em 10. Kate Souris has em. Okay, I guess as long as PyratLeather got his, this went off swimmingly, beside a coupl of delays to hold things back a couple of weeks (which is nothing). Thanks to everyone for joining in. Looking forward to more rounds.
  7. Well she was quick in getting back to me! Which is really cool considering the long weekend and all... Well that say it all!
  8. I don't have her contact info.... But I can reach her through another social network we are both on and ask her... It will likely take a day or two, but I will try and get back to you on the book. Or perhaps maybe Dutch or one of the other crew members that posts here occasionally will see this and respond.
  9. I have an excuse. The Pirate Brethren's mail list celebrates its 10th birthday today! It's also Canada Day (think 4th of July, but in another country)... Oh, I almost forgot... Congratulations on being the longest standing Pirate Re-enactor groups I have encountered!
  10. In Canada it is by Province... In Ontario, one has to go to a specialized store for beer or other alcohols, and there are only two chains of any note, "The Beer Store" (guess what they specialize in?) or the "LCBO" stores (government owened, LCBO = Liquor Control Board of Ontario), which is where wine and hard liquers are sold (and more exotic imported or microbrewery beers). There is a smaller chain called "The Wine Rack" which sells wine only, that can be found in some malls... No alcohol is "dilluted" in Ontario (that I have seen), and the stores tend to be found regularly enough and in convenient enough locations as to not be a real problem. Quebec sells beer and wine in convenience stores and grocery stores, but I don't recall where to get hard liquer in Quebec.... I believe Manitoba's laws are very similar to Ontario's... Haven't travelled enough to the other provinces to rightly remember the other provinces situations. For those who are interested, the LCBO is one of the Ontario Government's BEST money makers... Although there were strong talks about privatization at the time I was moving to Ohio from Canada, and I never bothered to follow up on how that ended.
  11. Which is EXACTLY what we did... Good rum is RARE in Ohio, most grocery stores only carry the "diluted" alcohols (aroun 20% alcohol), which is just sad... The better stuff can be gotten at some "State" Stores, but they are all out of the way and inconvenient to get to...
  12. So I purchased Hatchet Meg's (of the BlackBeard Crew) rum cake cook book at the Hampton festival earlier this month... After hearing so much about how great her cakes were, and after tasting it first hand (she was selling samples at the festival) I had to have the recipe book.... Up until now, I haven't really had the excuse to make one, but later this week, we are having a pot luck at work for Independence Day, so I thought that would be a good excuse to make one. Well I just dragged the wife to the grocery store (against her will) to buy the ingredients we didn't have on hand (most of them), and then raced home to bake the cake (which Kate has lovingly done 99% of the work on)... I can't wait to taste it... But unfortunately I have to wait until Thursday (when the pot luck is)... For those who have the book (and those who don't, should BUY IT) I decided to make the cake named for Dutch (bbcdutchman), as quite honestly it looked the best to me.... I'll let you all know on Friday just how great of a job the missus did on it.
  13. My guess is you have a "widescreen" monitor, or you resolution set to high enough that they are not needed... I have the problems on my laptop, which admittedly is running Linux and Firefox and not Windows, but is a narrow screen.. Older PCs or people with non-standard systems seem to be the only ones with troubles.
  14. I have found it only works on Microsoft Internet Exploder... I mean Microsoft Internet Edxplorer, or Opera... Netscape and/or Mozilla doesn;t kcik in the horizontal scroll bars for some reason on that site. Hope this helps.
  15. Happy Birthday Jack... How is it you were born the day after your wife? (Wives ) What kind of coincidence is that?
  16. Worth watching and laughing at, but is definitely more funny if you are Canadian and know about the places and things he is singing about.
  17. Damn, I hadn't even considered that! Well I just ran off and checked and my doglock musket, and it does have a bridled pan... Whew (relief)... But I don't think I can say the same for the fishtail fowler I have coming in the mail in a few weeks...
  18. I'm with you Sterling... I was just pointing out my observations, but while I accept that is how things will likely go, I certainly hope they no do not go that way.. Or at least very far that way. I'm not much liking the idea of adding a flashguard to my doglock, but as someone who does a more military style portrayal (seemingly more often than not) I may not have the choice.
  19. I can't find the quotation at the moment.... But I recall in my researches on soldiers clothing a quote for an order of uniforms that included "colour'd neck cloths" or something like that... I'm still trying to find something more concrete about that, but i am starting to think that my off white cravat for my Red Coat portrayal may be incorrect and that perhaps using a cravat of one of the colours of the uniform may be the way to go. If all of my guesswork surrounding the quote on soldier's neck cloths is correct, it may be that cravats of various colours were worn (or at least in military contexts).
  20. And a very happy birthday to Brig! Hope this is the best one yet for you!
  21. Actually, I don't think the insurance thing will factor in as much as the divide between pirate re-enactors and more traditional 18th century re-enactors narrows... The more traditional 18th century re-enactors have a long standing traditional and very ingrained culture of mandating flashguards... As pirate re-enacting sprung up as a more loose and informal thing, a great many things that don't fly at F&IW and REv War events have become commonplace at pirate events. Pistols are another one to watch for... They are used very little in F&IW and Rev War events, discouraged at many events, and all out not allowed at quite a few as well if I have not misread things.
  22. Fine then, the first round is on me... Although you might not like... Champange for everyone, as that is the drink of weddings and anniversaries!
  23. So, today marks the first year anniversary of two pub members.... One year ago today some minister shackled myself and Kate Souris together for all eternity... So I raise a glass to me wife, and here's to having at least 50 more of these years.. Because it will be a miracle if I live that long.
  24. Silkie, While there is nothing much there, a brief dialogue between som of the people on the pub that are going happened On This Thread
  25. Actually, wife and I picked up the "Death's head Buttons" book when we were in St.Mary's City last weekend, and the earliest sample shown in that book are dated to 1710... So they did exist at least towards the end of the GAoP. And as for cloth covered buttons, I think the below image is what you may have been alluding to... My Justacorps with far too many buttons and button holes....
