Belly Box that goes around neck
michaelsbagley replied to Ivan Henry aka Moose's topic in Crafting Kit
You're welcome! Microsoft paint, it sucks but it can be used in a pinch... Now this started as a thread about buying a baldric, but has turned into a more of a how to make it kind of thing... Would you mind if I moved it up to pirate craft? As the direction this discussion took really seems to fit better in there. -
Belly Box that goes around neck

Pardon the crudeness of this sketch... But I am suggesting two strips, one longer to go over the back and shoulder, and one to come half way up your front. They should attach at one end each at about a 30 to 60 degree angle (depending on your fit and comfort).... The buckle should go on the front piece with the tongue of the strap being on the back strap. Let me know if this is making sense. -

That's a great idea Michael! Any idea what style of strap would be PC? I have a Tandy right by the house - I could run down there and gett he supplies. Just wondering what sort of pattern to use. BTW - Nice chatting with your wife in the airport! Your going to need at least 8 ounce weight leather (although I tend to prefer 10 ounce for straps)... They will likely even have some belt straps precut in good length that you could buy to save money. Bring the box with you so you can try feeding the strap through at an angle to make sure you get a good width. If you want to match the same colour as what you currently have on it, buy the "Antique Brown" cream dye. They will be able to help you with how to apply that.. I also recomend adding a buckle so you can take the box on and off the should harness. Test to ensure the buckle you choose will fit through the belt loops as well. Most Tandy leather factory locations are great at talking you through small projects like this... Heck a better location may even offer to help. I learned most of what I know about leather from Shannon (who you may or may not have met), but I have learned a great deal from Tandy leather employees as well. -

You could use the one you have and just find a strap that will accomodate it to hang it in that way... One of the reasons I angled the top of the belt loops on the boxes the way I did was to attempt to help them be able to mount on a baldric in case anyone wanted to try it. I have not done it myself yet, nor has anyone else who has bought one, but it should be possible... Although it might only accomodate a narrower strap in hanging that way (inch? inch and a quarter?). Please let me know if you have any luck with this. -
Silas, what unit is the Officer from? It looks like a Royal Artillery uniform, but not one that I'm familiar with. Hawkyns (Gunner, Royal Irish Artillery) Hey Hawkyns, I know you were asking Silas, but he might not know the answer... So I am going to muscle in here.... I'm not sure of the unit, but it is a crew from just North of Columbus Ohio... These folks are thinking of joining up with us pirates. I don't know if they represent a specific unit or not, but I could find out... Or Mark G knows more about them than I do, maybe he might pipe up if he knows anything.

Wife and I will be there.. We're trying to talk some others into coming with, but we'll likely not know until the week or two before if anyone else will be joining us on this trip.

Rolled into home about 8:00 PM, it was a long and uneventful drive... Freaking awesome event! Loved it! It was great to see everyone again! The Bone Islanders looked amazing! At first I almost didn't recognize them! Blackbeards crew were a brilliant host crew as always, and a joy to hang around as always. And of course camping with the Archangels is always an honour and pleasure.... Getting to to spend time and get to know of these folks better.... Priceless! Mooseworth, it was great to meet you and your lady (girlfriend? wife?). The pair of you looked fantastic! I only wish I had been able to find more time to sit and chat with the pair of you! But let me tell you, if everyone who got into re-enacting showed up to their first event looking like the pair of you, wow... Just wow! Gentleman Scotty and Kate, it was a pleasure to meet the pair of you as well. You two have really done a great job getting your stuff together as well! You two were a complete joy to hang out with and talk to. Mr. Tignor, another great new face! Your enthusiasm makes me remember why I enjoy this hobby so much! Thanks for being there and being a part of the great time. Hope to see you in a few weeks at St. Mary's, and maybe some other events this summer. Chrispy and Nell, the pair of you are just so great and fun... I can't speak highly enough of the pair of you... Heck even though you follow that Spike character around, and associate with the Nigel fella, and those other Buccaneers, you two are just awesome. Hugh and Salty, sorry we didn't say goodbye, but the departures snuck up on us quicker than expected. But it was wonderful to spend a bit of time with you two between all the extra running around I did this year. I'm probably missing a lot, and intentionally omitting other things (because I know those involved don't haunt the pub), but this was an event to remember, and an all around great time...

We'll be rolling into Hampton early in the afternoon... Before 3:00 PM I imagine, but we may sleep in a bit and not get there as close to noon as I originally suspected. And Trish and Shannon will likely arrive late Friday... How late is yet to be determined.

A couple of things happening at Port Washington
michaelsbagley replied to ThomasBlackthorne's topic in June
Good enough answer for me.. (although I was kind of hoping for a good tale).. Like I said a few posts back, I may not be going to be at Port Washington, but if you ever make it out to any of the other events I listed, look me up. -
Awesome work as always William! Love it to itty bitty pieces!

PM? But why? So many of us are curious as to the why! Please share! Respectfully, Grand Emporer to Pirates of the Midwest Michael -
Speaking of Momma Ratzzi, will she have the photos from RF5 with her? There were some pics she took that we would very much like to see or have if at all possible.

Wife and I (okay almost exclusively wife) will likely take plenty of photos to share and show off while Sterling and Ducth are out "fishing"....

How to make a Late 17th Century Fontange/Fontage
michaelsbagley replied to Cheeky Actress's topic in Crafting Kit
Yea Cheeky, one does have to be a member to view anything including blogs on Living History Worldwide... I'm still not sure how I feel about it... On one hand it keep the whole system very re-enactor focussed, on the other hand, it makes it hard to share info from there with re-enactors who don't feel like signing up for yet another social network... -
Bappy Hirthday Rats!!! May you finally star in your own story (without that sidekick of yours ) Seriously man, hope you have a great one!
-
Yah! Rats! Whoo-Hooo!!! So are ya bringing that sidekick of yours? Glad to hear your coming, although I am fairly certain I will see you before then anyways, see you there!

Hmmm, are you asking me for a favour in return for your patience... Let me think about that,,,. Hmmmm... Well, I guess so. Of course it works for me, be glad to help. Cheers

Just as an FYI, we have now received all the cards (I think Clay's arrrived over last weekend). Due to a small minor car accident over this pasrt weekend (yeah I know again.... and no one was hurt, and only minor damage, mostly body work) we've been tied up with dealing with insurance and getting the new vehicle repaired, all the while still trying to get ready to go to Hampton this coming weekend.... Sooo We will be holding off on shipping out the cards until we get back from Hampton. We should be sending them out next Tuesday or Wednesday. Incredibly sorry about the delays... But the cards are all really awesome and well worth the wait. Sjöröveren, I'm making a call here... Since everyone sent me 10 cards, and that means I am going to have extras... I could have just kept them myself... But I have decided to send them to you regardless of your needing to duck out for your reasons, so could you please PM me with your home address? Please don't argue with me on this point, I am not adverse to going through indirect means to get your address and sending them to you anyways. Cheers all

In case anyone was curious, I ordered the Kasenit, it came through the mail very quickly (I received it Friday or Saturday) and with the help if a friend who is a welder (and all around good metal working person), I was able (okay the welder did most of the work) to very successfully reharden the frizeen so it sparks great now. Of course now I have a one pound can of Kasenit (minus the two teaspoons it took to do my frizzen) that will take up space in the tool closet for probably ever....

I'm feeling lazy, does anyone have the address to the museum for us to use on the GPS and/or Mapquest directions? If you could either post the address here or private message me with it, I would be greatlly appreciative! See you guys Friday late morning or early afternoon.

Yes Mark has it dead on. he and his wife are using their pavillian, and they are bringing the one wedge for our friends Trish and Shannon, wife and I will be sleeping in our new wedge. So from the Ohio crew, it will be a total of two wedges and one pavillion.

How about freaking awesome!!! Outfits like that or similar, fall into my absolute favourite as far as appearances go for pirate re-enacting!

By hand... No seriously, even the set of stays I made with the machine, I tried doing the edge binding by machine, but it was actually easier (albeit slower) to do it by hand.

Okay, Linda got back to me really quick on this one. Cash donations ARE tax deductable, receipts are sent out for donation whether the donation is made via check or money order and sent via mail, or the donations are done through the online form on the santamaria.org web site. Now I don't know how it works in the USA (I probably should as I've been here three years now), but in Canada, tax receipts for cash donations were not issued nor claimable on ones taxes unless they surpassed a minimum limit (which I seem to recall being about $20)... I don't know if that is the same here or not. but it is something to consider.
