Well I did a search through both the "Captain's Twill" and "Thieve's Market" sections of the pub, and I couldn't find the thread I seem to recall. Maybe the discussion happenned on another pirate forum I am on? Sorry I couldn't be of more help or provide more solid evidence.

The short answer is they are not historically correct that I know of. There have been a few really good in depth discussions about them over the years, I'll try and dig the links up and post them for you. If memory serves me well, there was one period image that seemed to depict vertical striped socks... But no evidence of the horizontal striped stocking so popular amongst the Rennie pirate scene.

Darn, I wish I could watch the sneak peak... But youTube is blocked from our work computers, now I have to wait until I get home from work tonight...

Jacquard is textured like brocade... The main difference is the type of loom it is done on. It is a much more modern style of loom, capable of finer pattern repetition (which is why jacquards tend to have smaller patterns that repeat with greater frequency). Another small difference is brocades are almost reversable (and definitely reversible in some cases) whereas most of the jacquards I have seen only really look good from one side. So the differences are there, but only a fabric snob or someone getting too close to you will notice.

MadL, good brocades are extremely hard to come by.... The last seriously awesome brocades I saw (and I've lost the link) were from some company from France and were over $100 per yard! One substitute you might want to consider that is a bit easier to find is Jacquard (sp?). Jacquard tends to have smaller pattern and repetition than true brocades, and the jacquard technique postdates the period by over 100 years, but at a casual glance they are close enough and more than good enough. I was lucky enough to find 10 yards of 100% silk jacquard on eBay about a year ago for $50... That kind of luck comes rarely, but fabric_store.com carries some linen and cotton jacquards, and I am sure a google search will find you plenty of other sources.

Hey MorganTyre, would you be willing to post some pics of the work (either in progress or when you finish). I like the description you have posted, but I would want to see it before giving it a go myself. Thanks a ton for sharing your experience in doing this, it makes it seem less daunting for someone who has been pondering undertaking the same task!

Some crazy Blueberry-Pomegranate-Acai blended smoothie thing from the new cafe that openned up in the office lobby area...

LOL got stuck on a Viking !! LOL would have loved a picture of that. Sure, we'll bring our wedding photos next time we're down that way....

But I'm workin on my like totally new impression man, the dread pirate Keanu Reeves... It will be like totally excellent!

Sorry to hear that Lady B, hope things work out for you though... There is still about a month left for things to work themselves out. Dude, you're turning purple.... Breath already!

Perhaps a self addressed and pre-stamped/pre-paid envelope would be less intimidating than sending money? I think the post office have a standard shipping rate for media (CD) sized envelopes, sending a prepaid media envelope would definitelt cover it.... Well as long as no one makes any cards that are exceptionally thick or oversized. And my offer to cover this round out of the generousity of my black heart still stands. I made the above suggestion more for future consideration.

Not sure about this... But I've heard (which means I can't back this up), but I've heard that intentional browning was a later period thing. I'd be interested in knowing if there is any truth or falsehood to this though. I thought mustard was just another agent used for browning? I'm kind of looking to take the glossy shine off my two new peices as well, I am leaning away from colouring (no browning or blueing), and would prefer just to take the almost chrome like shine down to a dull gray. I've heard fine grit steel wool will do this, but would like to hear if anyone else has had luck with that. Good luck Morgan, love to see some pics once you finish!

And my latest sword belt... Same as my old one with a basic decorative edge line.

Awesome stuff Dutch.... I can see a ton of improvement to her as compared to when I saw her back in October!

Would it be reasonable to say.... Leave the number 10 spot open until this Friday (April 10) and if no one has claimed it by then, wife and I will go in separately? But for the really eager, don't hesitate to start now and get a head start.

Strange...it is a lolrabbit announcing that it has evil plans. Can anyone else not see it? This doesn't apply to me any more, but at the last place I worked photobucket and some of the other photo sharing systems were blocked, which prevented me from being able to even view linked photos from photobucket, on this forum and in other places. Maybe that is the case?

Well, this was a great event! We still have to sort through the photos and post them up to Photobucket (like to come soon I hope). The Colonial PA Plantation is an awesome site for re-enacting, for those of you who have never been, it is an old farmhouse and grounds that have been restored and is now an active working farm with many heirloom animals. The caretakers who work and take care of the farm and the various staff and voluteers of the Plantation are all incredibly friendly and helpful people. The concept for this event is great as well, I didn't have the best idea about it until I had gotten there and talked to John Machate (the organizer of this one) and Art (who is a wealth of knowledge on top of beign a Class A swell guy). I'm looking forward to doing this one again next year, as much as I love Pirates and piracy re-enacting, this was a great event for branching out into the non-pirate elements of the GAoP.

Okay, I thought I would start a new thread for the second round of trading cards. I will add the list of participants top the bottom of this post as they join. Guidelines (because we don't like rules) 1. We will be aiming for 10 participants (including the cat herder, me and wife as a team). 2. Each participant will create ten cards of about 2 1/2" X 3 1/2". Traditionally the cards are all the same, but we're pyrates and don't follow the rules or traditions, so chaos is more than perfectly acceptable (and almost preferable). So 10 cards all the same or a variety of 10 cards is cool, don't hesitate to do what works best for you. Please remember to place your mark or some sort of indicator that you made the card so it is easy to sort them and divy them up.... I will be cracking my whip hardest over my own back on this account. 3. All cards should be in the mail to me by May 15th (PM me for our address when you are ready to send). This should give everyone plenty of time (about six weeks) to make their cards and get them sent. 4. When I have received all the cards, I will divide the cards up so each participant will receive one card from each other participant (and one of their own). I should have all of the participants mailing addresses on the envelopes I receive with the cards, but I may PM you to confirm or if I find it difficult to read. 5. I will try to have all of the cards mailed out to the participants so as everyone should have received them by the end of May (give or take). I will be covering the postage on my end for this round. List of Participants 1. Michael Bagley (Cat herder for this round) 2. Ransom (Rançonner) 3. J8ksdad 4. Sjöröveren 5. Pew 6. PyrateLeather (Clay) 7. Patrick Hand 8. Canibal Chrispy 9. Brig 10. Kate Souris

If you are using a Windows computer with a full keyboard (not a laptop) you can hold down the "ALT" key, quickly type "135" on the keypad (and it has to be the keypad not the numbers above the letters) on releasing the "ALT" key the fancy little c with the tic will appear like this ç.

Bonjour, Bienvenue au la brasserie des filibustiers! (As a courtesy to the non Francaphones, the above is "welcome to the Pyracy Pub" or as close to pub I can get with my limited French)

I know line cutting has been brought up already, but I thought I would toss this little story out there.. More to get it out of my system than anything... The office I work in has an ATM down in the lobby, and I went down to grab some cash to pay for my lunch. Someone was at the ATM using it when I got there, they were taking their time, probably a bit too much time. While waiting I was standing obviously in line to get to the ATM, but at a respectful distance behind the user at the ATM using it. I know I don't care for people hovering over my shoulder when I use the ATM, so I try and be as consientious and respectful in that regards to other people and give them some space. So while I am waiting, and waiting, and waiting, another lady comes around the corner and jump in the line right in front of me instantly hovering over the shoulder of the lady who was still poking away and taking her sweet time using the ATM. At that moment I considered pointing out the "mistake" of the line cutter.. Then thought better of it and walked away determining to pay for my lunch via card instead... Oooops, this was intended for the petty annoyances thread, sorry I misplaced it...

I would be willing to take on the role as wrangler... Heck I would even offer to cover the postage as you did for the first run... It's a matter of time... If there is enough people interested, and we can take let's say until the middle of May (if not the end of May), then it would work for me... But the next few weeks are looking rough for me... So yeah, if those interested are willing to have a go with a 1 1/2 to 2 month deadline, count me in and as wrangler if no one else wants the honour.

Perhaps a second round is in order? I feel bad because I volunteered the wife and I, and she did most (okay all) of the work because I got sidetracked on a stupid sewing project.. This would give me a chance to actually contribute...
