English Writing in GOoP - When f Replaces s
michaelsbagley replied to Jas. Hook's topic in Captain Twill
Mission has a great deal of insight into this, and has posted about it at some point... He could probably explain it a ton better, but I think it has something to do with the italicized "f" being a long "s"... Although because nothing (writing wise, or much else for that matter) in the period is standardized, there are not likely any hard and fast rules about it. -
I finally finished the larger sized version. This one is about 7 inches in diameter, and about 20 inches long. It would be perfect for a light weekend piece of luggage. This one will be going up for auction later this week as a part of the charity auction for the Santa Maria event. I'll post link to the pics rather than posting the pics, because I took a bunch of them trying to get the best pic for eBay. End View Above View Angle View Front View Top View Inside View 1 Inside View After the I get through next weekend, I will be starting a large size one for the wife (about 9 inches diameter, and 24 inches long). I think she wants it in brown, so I'll post some images of that when it is complete for comparison

Handstitching Basics by Kass Resurrection???
michaelsbagley replied to Korisios's topic in Crafting Kit
as far as I can tell, it is visible.... The thread is just locked so no further posts can be added to it. Do you mean you want the topic unlocked so you can add questions or other info to it? Or is it that I can see the topic and you can't for whatever reason? Let me know and I will try and fix it for you. I can read it, but I can't see the pictures... I am a visual learner you know... If there were pictures, the were linked from another source and have been removed.... But to me it looks like there might not have ever been images to go with that thread. sorry I can't help you there. I do know that if you buy any Reconstructing History pattern, there are graphics that quickly demonstrate those stitches.... But I am pretty sure most of them can be found on the web somewhere. Maybe when I am on a more stable computer on Monday, I will look for some good pictorals online, and post them here for you. -
Thanks Callenish, I was looking for that earlier to post it... But I didn't have as good of luck as you did in finding it. I think there are a few other images of the kerchief being worn on the head out there as well (but I am having a complete brain fart day and can't remember anything for certain). But on the whole, based on the body of available images, it is reasonable to say it was done, perhaps not commonly, but it was done. I think for those who do later time frames (and correct me if I am incorrect here), but I think the practice was more common during and after the F&IW period (I'm thinking French Milice here).

That is exactly what I was talking about. The game is still available, I saw a new series available at a store a few months back... But to be honest, I only really liked the first handful of series of the game, and then it just seemed to get to the point where they were adding new series of cards just for the sake of a cash grab and not to add anything worthwhile to the game... That is just an opinion though. I have a large enough collection of the early series of the game to host myself and many others to play, the problem I have is just finding local folks interested in playing.

Loved the cards from this round! I do have to admit to being a small bit selfish on one of the card selections.... I'm a HUGE fan of the TV series LOST... And Gertie did one card of her set with a drawing of Hugo (Hurley) from the show, that I chose to be mine from the set. Loved the use of islands from the Pirate Collectable card game from Pew, that really brought back some fond memories of that game for me. I liked the tongue in cheek labels from McCools cards! How can one not just love a Patrick Hand card? Great cards all around, I feel bad singling out a few for praise as they were really all awesome! Best round yet!

I seem to recall reading a lengthy article about absinthe a few years back... From what I recall, it contains a narcotic element known as thujone. Apparently the modern stuff has one-hundredth (1/100th) or less the level of thujone as the 19th century stuff (on top the different alcohol levels Mark G mentions). I wonder if it is still there, but when I moved out of Toronto about 5 years ago, there was a Absinthe bar on Queen Street East, just outside of downtown. I only went once, but it was a neat place. There was also a bar up on Bloor West near Landsdowne that served it with the full slotted spoon and all. On the whole, I enjoy Absinthe... But only in small doses. A glass or a single serving in an evening is about all I can take before not wanting any more.

Well Cross, one might have to live overseas for the real accent... But one doesn't need to live in the UK to attend a pirate event with a boarding action. We did one back in September(not nearly as good as Foxe's), and will be doing it again in a week and a half (with improvements over September, but still not likely as good as the one in Foxe's video). Maybe if we're lucky someone will have a video camera there and we can post that in a few weeks. Mark G and I completed the second rope ladder this past Sunday so we can have more than one person going over the rail at a time.

Royaliste (the current owner who does post here occasionally) has been used by some pirate entusiasts for the last many years is currently up for sale... The Royaliste I've not sailed on her, but I have been onboard her for a brief tour a couple of times, and she is a nice ship.

You'd be more than welcome among the Mercury Crew. And a great addition to the crew he will make! Glad to hear your coming Tartan Jack! I'm sure you will enjoy PiP as much or more than Paynetown.

For those needin' a period Firearm
michaelsbagley replied to Gentleman of Fortune's topic in Thieves Market
That particular Leonard Day is a production musket for him (or as close to one as he gets), as I see them almost everywhere... And every time I see it, I want it and mourn not being able to get it. But that French Rifle.... That is a true thing of beauty, if only it weren't priced like an original! -
Wow. That is freaking gorgeous!!! Envious to the nth degree is all I can feel.. Well awe, and then envy.

Mssr Bagley - I'll check with Guantanamera and see what is going on for that week-end to see if we can cruise on down to Columbus. She and I are targeting completion of our impressions for 01 July of this year and we'll not be attending anything as participants before we're ready to roll. All that sewing is fun but rather time consuming for sure...!
-
Would you consider bringing one of those canvas musket bags with you if you are able to make it to Columbus in a few weeks? I'd like to save myself a few sheckles on shipping if you can! Otherwise, I'll order one from you.

I think Midnight's suggestion is a form of browning, but I agree browning would be a good option (from what I know of it).... Blueing on the other hand.... Well I thought blueing steel was a heat process, and while good metalworkers can successfully do blueing, applying heat to any tempered metal (like knives and sword blades) can be a foolish endeavour for anyone who isn't very well trained in the process, as too much heat can ruin the temper on a blade. I think there are chemical blueing agents out there, and they might be safe, but I would storngly recommend against any heat blueing.

I'll miss you Bo. You've got some great insights, and are a great craftsman. I hope this storm passes and things get better for you and you find your way back in your own time. Cheers.

I know most Cabelas tend to carry them, and they are pretty easy to find on eBay. My local Gander Mountain store has them. If there are any Rendezvous in your area, accessories like that can usually always be found there. I've had a few different types of those (I lose them all the time), so I have gotten in the habit of buying two, so when I lose one, I still have another to fall back on. Track of the Wolf, is another good online source for those.

Well it seems I had a big brain fart moment, because I tried the number again, and this time it worked... I must have mis-dialed the number last time I tried it. William, while I wouldn't be interested in another Mercury t-shirt (I've barely broken in my first one ), the wife as big on the idea of a hoody (or is it hoodie?) or sweat shirt, and I might just be willing to get one for me as well.... So if you can mix the order up and don't have to order all t-shirts, you can put us down for those.

I'm starting to put some thought towards food... I have some ideas as to what I am going to bring... But I wanted to start the ball rolling on discussions for those coming as to what they might bring... I also really need to know about any food allergies or food restrictions (vegitarians, vegans, no onions etc.), please either post here or message or email me.

Okay, I tried to order the larger sized early coffee pot from this guy, but the phone number on the web site is no longer in service.... So then I tried to email him, and see if I could order it through that way... Only to discover his email is out of service, and bounces the message back to the sender. Any chance you have some current contact information from this guy? I am reluctant to mail a check or money order to an address for a product with no means of contacting the vendor, and since he is on the East coast, I don't see me running into him at an event any time in the near future. Any other suggestions on a vendor to get a coffee pot similar to the Early Style one Westminster Forge sells? I haven't tried google yet, but if I find anything I will post here. William, I really hope it works out that you can make it after all! It would be great to see you again!

That is likely the best pattern to start with... But that pattern is for a "Gentlemen's Coat". A rank and file coat would not likely have all of the extra buttons, but since you seem to be leaning towards an "Officer's Coat", yeah I guess you would want to put that many buttons on it. I'm not sure you will want this advice, but I strongly recommend making a soldier's coat first, and once you complete that, take the lessons you learned making it to make a nicer officer's coat.

That web site was recently recommended to me as well. I think the uniforms pictures, are reproductions. But they are awesome! In fact that web site has made me kind of want to make a Russian Dragoon uniform... But I already have too many unfinished projects on my plate, so that will have to wait until another year.

Hey Adam, It sounds like you are more or less just getting started out... But this link is to a long running discussion topic about the basic set of gear for a pirate re-enactor. There is some really good discussion about style and materials, and methods of approach. Hope it helps.

1. Amsterdam Nut Brown Ale (only available in the greater Toronto Area that I know of) 2. La Fin Du Monde (Mostly available in Quebec, but can be found throughout Canada and some parts of the US as an import) 3. Rickards Red (Found throughout Ontario, perhaps the rest of Canada, haven't seen it in the US yet) 4. XO (a French ale available on import rarely, infused with a 12 year old cognac) 5. Jury is still out for what to put here.
