  1. Yeah, while it isn't soon, it is coming up and with me being busy this summer, I thought I would start the ball rolling now rather than waiting for the last minute. Details are as usual with the same caveat that changes may occur, but I will update this forum (and others) as well as the web site if and as soon as any major changes occur. For those who came last September, it doesn't look like the ship is booked either night, so the R-Bar excursion may be a lot more optional. Although the R-Bar has opened a kitchen and does now serve food (which was the biggest issue with that last year). There is a Facebook Page for this event up as well, but please keep in mind the Facebook page is just as much for spectators (if not more so) as for the participants, so please try to keep re-enactor and participant organizational posts here or via email so as to not confuse spectators as to what the event is about. More details to come as they become relevant.
  2. Cool! That is exactly the kind of info about "wreckers" I wanted! Should be a real treat seeing your setup!
  3. "Wreckers"? Sounds interesting. What year are they portraying? Or is that a secret to be revealed at the event?
  4. Ack, I am soooo sorry guys and gals... I am one of the hold-ups. I solemnly swear I will get the cards done and sent out by the end of this weekend. Been side-swiped with life lately.
  5. I believe Ty mentioned firming up the dates for the 2011 event in October or November (it was early November '09 when the 2010 dates were set). I would wager it will likely be the same weekend though... which would be the last full weekend in June or weekend prior to the 4th of July celebrations.... Or June 24th to 26th 2011.... But time will tell. It's kind of funny, Ty and I were so positive of the event from November 2009 through April 2010 (during that time we chatted a fair bit), it was in Late April through May to early June even when the "on again/off again" confusions began.
  6. The shoes sold yesterday anyways. The musket is still up for trade/sale though.
  7. Hey all, A pair of size 13 Loyalist Arms shoes were put up for sale on another forum I am on recently. Send me a PM if you are interested and I will try and put you in touch with the seller, unless you are on the Pirate Brethren forum as well, in which case I would recommend contacting him through PM on that forum yourself. Also up for sale from the same guy is a Middlesex Village Early Fowler, the fishtail stock shape with an English Lock. He listed the shoes at $75, he is looking to trade the fishtail for a French Fusil style musket or a English early Bess, although I am certain he would take a reasonable cash offer on it.
  8. You sure did.... I've done a quick search (like very quick), and I have not been able to locate a rental source for the small cabins I noticed on the shuttle from last year. I'm not sure they would be cheap, but when I saw them last year they left me with the impression they would be one of the more cost effective accommodations on the island (given one pooled in with two or three people, as they looked like small two or three bedroom cottages). The hotel we had access to for showers and breakfasts also looked like it might have been reasonable (but loud as it was on the "main strip").
  9. captscurvy_nc, can't wait to see how it turns out for you! You will post some pics when you are done? I was browsing around the B. Blacks and Sons web site (on of the better online sources for wool IMHO), and I noticed they are carrying a new colour in their wool coating/melton, "Red Clay" (called "Pompeian Red" in the description below the name) which if you ask me, looks a fair bit closer to madder than any colour they have previously carried. It is heavy stuff, and likely pretty close to a good weight for a period soldier's coat. B. Blacks & Sons - Clay Red wool coating/melton
  10. Now that my brain has settled and I can think clearly again... I just want to say "Thank You!!!!" to all those who came out last weekend. This was a pretty last minute deal that we all came together for, and did a spectacular job of. Sure there were a few bumps along the road (none so bold as the heavy handed jerk demanding all the re-enactors being on time, being late himself ) but outside a few stressful moments, even that was barely a blip on the radar of having a great time and doing a wonderful job! I'm proud and happy at how great the folks who came out for this one made of the weekend. I think it is a testament that in the costume contest, of the 32 contestants of mixed styles of clothing/costumes, which boiled down to 8 finalists, over half of which were with the re-enactors, and of course the winner being M.A. d'Dogge. A lot of ideas for improvement have been mentioned, and will be discussed for next year. But despite all the good ideas for making it better, the ideas for improvement are secondary to the excellent feedback the festival organizers gave us and the good reception we got from the spectators. All of those who came out were awesome! I can't thank you all enough for pulling together on this one and making it the awesome time we all had!
  11. Happy birthday to both of you! The best set of twins I ever met! Specially to the evil one! You two can argue over who that is!
  12. I think I heard that the island is three miles off the coast. I would have to double check a map to ensure that number is accurate. The other thing is, the main downtown of the island is a couple of miles from where the slow ferry docks (which is actually quite fast), there is an express ferry (that costs a fair bit more and runs later) that docks right in the downtown core (more or less). I will be the main contact person for the re-enactors for next year as well. Although it will be a pretty relaxed endeavour again. Just more time for planning as there will not be as much "0n-again, off-again" circumstances next year as there was this year.
  13. That one has been posted in the long ongoing discussion on uniforms I linked earlier in this thread... But it is well worth mentioning here again, as the leftmost soldier does look like a grenadier (as you said Foxe). On that note, would you guys be okay if I merged this discussion with the ongoing soldier thread? Or would you prefer to keep the more Grenadier topic seperate? No pressure either way, just thought I would throw that out there.
  14. Thank you all for be so willing to hunt for it, and specially thanks to you Capt. J for finding it! I'll PM you my address shortly!
  15. While packing for this weekend's event, I couldn't find my red(ish) neckerchief. Did I leave it in the Mercury camp at De Chartres? Would everyone mind checking their stuff to see if it got mixed in? I think I may have left it draped over the Thatcher's wagon, or on the wash tub we were using to cool our feet, but who knows where it may have wound up. If those who have contact information for the folks that don't post here could pass on the message to have a search for it, I would be very grateful. The neckerchief isn't worth, but it has served me well for about three years now and I would very much like to continue to use it.
  16. We will be meeting at.... Catawba Inn Pub - 0.24 miles away 4112 N Crogan St, Port Clinton, OH 43452 US Website (419) 797-2501 It looks to be a handful of blocks away from the parking area on the mainland. We can meet there between 6:30 and 7:00 PM this evening, load everyones gear into the two vehicles and boats, and then hop on the ferry. I'll try and call you in a short bit and leave you a message as well. Oh, we will have access to showers and flushing bathrooms all weekend, and they even have backup shelter for us in case of rain. The backup shelter may be camping on someone's floor, but they have it taken care of for those who don;t want to brave rain in their tents. Glad to hear you can make it, when you said that there was a chance you couldn't come, I was pretty bummed and hoping things would work out for you M.A. d'Dogge. See you tonight.
  17. Geez, It's amazing what I had forgotten that I had... The below Google Book is really cool and needs to be shared. English Army Lists and Commissions 1664 - 1714 - volume 5 - By: Charles Dalton I haven't read it yet, but I have had the web page bookmarked for who knows how long. I have skimmed it a little, and not seen a great deal of info on what the units had or used, but it does give rally good insight into the ratios of officers and what ratios of what ranks etc. And there is even some information on Marines in there! I am going to have to get reading this one soon. You know Dana, you really got me to being back interested in this again and wanting to focus on it again! Edit: Having a decompression moment, and thought I would see if I could find volumes one to four.... And found volume six instead... English Army Lists and Commissions 1664 - 1714 - volume 6 - By: Charles Dalton And finally found volume one... English Army Lists and Commissions 1664 - 1714 - volume 1 - By: Charles Dalton
  18. The Early Doglock, would work.... specially for a colonial soldier because, as you said, there was quite a mismatch of weapons and so-forth... But I really think the later 17th century Doglock Carbine would be more ideal (you know, the one you are having such a hard time getting in. ). Failing that, if you can find a first model Brown Bess (the one with the wooden ramrod), they look close enough to the Queen Anne era infantry musket (in my opinion) to pass of well. In fact if you can find a first model Bess with the wooden ramrod and no King George cypher on the lock-plate I think it would be just about perfect. Actually I just had a look at your French Model 1696 musket and it looks almost perfect except for the fact it has a "pied de vache" style butt instead of the more english style (look at your english doglock blunderbuss for comparison). The Williamite era muskets had a more flat lockplate than the Besses (I have some images in a book somewhere if you want to see one), so it would be hard to find a production musket to match that look specifically. So pretty much unless you go with a custome musket you will have to choose your compromise.
  19. Okay here is the latest format we are going to try for the Raids/Events section. The Raids/Events area will be divided into 13 sections. One for each months, please post about the event you are discussing in the correct month, or if you post the topic in the incorrect month, ask a Moderator or Admin to move the topic to the correct month for you. If the event you wish to post or discuss falls over a changing month, please post the event in the month the event begins in. The 13th section "General Event Discussions" is for general event discussions that do not fall into a particular month. For instance when an event is being planned but a date hasn't been chosen yet, this would be the place to discuss it (please ask for the topic to be moved once a month is decided on). Or for discussions on events in general or discussion on style of events, or any other type of discussion that doesn't fall within a month. The "General Events Discussion" is also where we will keep the topics about format changes and plans to re-organize or improve the "Raids/Events" section. Hope the new format is working out for everyone, if you have constructive suggestions, please share!
  20. Hmmmm, working a uniform into the "Ivan Henry" concept could be a bit more difficult. But using blue facings is one of the easiest routes I have found. Royal units (any unit with Royal in the title, with perhaps the exception of Artillery) and Independent companies (which were pretty widely spread around the colonies and Caribbean) both used blue facings. White, Yellow, and Green seem to be the other most common colours, but even Orange and sea-foam (green-blue) and other colours were used. Personally, I pirate as "Mickey Souris" (a Frenchie, or an English/French cross depending on which mood hits me) and I use Michael "Mickey" Surrey (an Englishman) when I do solider (the two names are almost pronouced the same give or take the accent). I tend to reinvent my character (when I even bother with it) for each event. I like the concept of an ongoing character concept, but that isn't a strength of mine, so I tend to avoid it. I just had a look back, and the link to Lee Offen's "British Regulars in America, 1664-1714" that I posted in this post, seems to be broken and the document not there. It had a really detailed list of units, locations and colours of facings. I am going to have look for it again, and see if I can post the new location of it (if it still exists). Maybe Lee will let me repost the document on my web site or on yours (or both). Edit: This doesn't look like I remember it, but it is by Lee Offen and has most of the same information on it... Linkity Link
  21. I've heard the "Grenadiers being the tallest" thing widely touted in Rev-War, F&IW, and War of 1812 circles... So I do tend to believe it, even though I have yet to see (likely because I haven't thought to look) any period sources that validate it. While I don't like the super tall mitre hats, I do like the Marine cap in the image you just showed. My problem is when I first started going down this road, it was almost impossible for me to find any really good info on period marines, and I was finding lots of good references to "Foote Guard" (infantry), so I just went with that as being the easiest (well the easiest that wasn't grenadier ). Personally, I think you would make a great Grenadier, and with your preference for fancier clothing, it would be a good look for you! That and I just think it would be really cool to have someone doing a good grenadier portrayal! (read as peer pressure! ) The one cool thing about doing soldier impressions, is that many of the items can easily be reused. When I finish my version two infantry uniform, I could likely also use it to pull off a marine impression with just a different hat, and maybe a few other accessories. The Grenadier would require a new coat and hat (and maybe waistcoat too) which is a fair bit more work, but still much less than making whole new outfits. And that image of the Grenadier with the yellow facing is actually a lot cooler looking than the Blenheim Tapestry ones, it almost uses the "Marine style" cap... So what unit and facing colours are you considering?
  22. This topic from the Pirates In Paradise section is an oldie, but a great one... There are all kinds of suggestions for shape, design and treatment of a home made tent! It is long, and veers on quite a few tangents, but is more than well worth the read! Heck I have no use for another tent, and I reread the topic yesterday just for the enjoyment of it. Specifically on topic, is this post, where Patrick Hand comments on the additional weight treating canvas does. The previous post where I post a link to some period recipes for canvas treatment has a dead link, which is a real shame, as I recall that web page (which is no longer active) has some really cool information on it.
  23. As much as I have looked at that image, this is first I have noticed that! My guess is that it is an artist rendition error, and that both turn-backs should be blue.... But who knows? Another thing that sticks out to me here, is that the breeches seem to be white (or off-white) instead of blue. In my research, breech and waistcoat colour seems to only count for the initial issue of a uniform, and subsequent waistcoats and/or breeches may have been drawn from personal sources and may not have matched unit colours. It's really cool that you want to do a Grenadier impression. You're the first one I know of on this continent who is working towards it (or even seriously thinking about working towards it). I always thought the grenadier uniform to be one of the coolest looking in the period, except the hat... I am not a fan of the mitre style hat.
  24. As of right now..... My thought was to restore it to close to the state it was in prior to the BIG LONG LIST (as in each event in a subforum by month). Stynky and I have discussed some options, but suggestions are most welcome!!! The way I see it, within the constraints of the forums technology, the options are.... 1. The BIG LONG LIST. All events are in the Raids Forum as subfolders, with a section for events we don't know about (Unsorted Raids) that will eventually (time permitting) be given their own subforum. This is more or less how the Raids section has been set up for the last year. 2. There is a subforum for each month, and a sub-subforum for each event. This is how the Raids was set up about a year ago (+/-). And more or less what I am aiming for in the short term. 3. The Raids section gets a subsection for each month, with no sub-sub-forums, and each event has it's own topics just in the month. Options #1 and #2 need a good deal of maintenance, which history has shown does fall behind from time to time. Option #3 is pretty self maintaining, but does have the downside of event topics that are a bit slower on the post count getting pushed down the list. Option #2, while likely the most organized looking, has like I said a high level of Admin maintenance required, but also requires viewers to drill down a few levels to actually get to the threads. Anyways, I don't want this to be a long winded analysis... But I guess my point is, there are pros and cons to the different ways to organize raids... Stynky will be the final word, but I am sure input and feedback would be welcome. Edit - I almost didn't answer your questions... Stynky is looking into having events linked from the calendar... But that may take time. P.S.S. I just added NorCal as a test to the Calendar, try it out. It doesn't seem like the best option, but it does look like it could work.
  25. I just did that today on my lunch. I will be poking away at the Raids section as much as possible over the next few weeks, but it will have to be around my work schedule and other real life infringements.
