  1. Hey Matt, Thanks for the interest!!! In the past, swords have been one of the best selling items in the auctions, however, in all the dozens of items that have gone through the auctions, I have seen less than a few get bid up to their "retail" value... Soooo with that in mind, although I love you sword work, and think one of your swords could fetch a pretty penny and good donation to the ship, it would likely go for a fair bit less than you would sell it for, in which case perhaps a knife/dagger would be better? It's your call really, all the previous swords we have had donated to the cause were likely swords that would retail in the $100 to $150 range, and went for $80 to $90 in auction. We've not had the chance to test the waters with a premium piece of steel art like you deal in. Pretty much, any donation you make will likely be heavily bid on and be most appreciated by all parties involved (bidder, auctioneers, and the ship as a cause). Let me know what you think! Michael
  2. If you are sending me a bag of feathers with that tar... I might just have to bid on it myself so I can use it all on Priddy! (kidding!)
  3. Just a little bump on this. We will be running another charity auction in conjunction with the May Santa Maria Pirate weekend (for event discussions, please See This Topic On the Pub). I just wanted to send a request out there to those who are generous of heart and are willing to and able to help support the cause. We could really use donations for the auction (also see this post or this web page), a few wonderful folks and small businesses have contacted me regarding this already, but if there is anyone else out there, please do contact either Kate_Souris, Mark G, Jennie_G, or myself if you can lend a hand. The last few auctions have made a significant impact on this event and the fund raising efforts for te ship and floating museum. Again a huge thank you to all those who have donated in the past, and those donating to this or a future efforts. Without you guys, gals and small businesses this event wouldn't be the success it has been and will continue to be.
  4. On an unrelated note, I've had a few inquiries as to donations for the auction. For those who are considering donating something to the auction, now would be a pretty good time to start thinking about it. In the past, we've had some awesome donations of hand made items, beginning items like that now would help us greatly ensure the auction transpires on time (for the first time... ). Please contact either Mark G or Kate_Souris or Jennie_G or even myself regarding donations. Any help on this front would be HUGELY appreciated! The auction has been one of the greater fund raising efforts in these events, often coming close in fund raising to the actual additional volumes of tickets sales the ship does on the days of these pirate weekends. A list of past contributors can be found at this link. Please let us know how you would like to be credited for your donation on this list, and provide a link to your business if you think it will help possibly direct people your way. We like to reciprocate any help we get in any way we can! Also if you have contributed in the past and aren't on that list, let me know so I can correct the list!
  5. If you promise to bring your pretty yeller dress... shift... bathing gown... or whatever... there will most possibly... maybe... could be... Ahhh forget it, I'll go ask the wife...
  6. Ooooohhhh yeeeaaahhhh... That little detail... My mistake. Yes the May 15th and 16th dates are confirmed, with the night of the 14th for those who want to camp out the extra night and be there promptly for the morning battle planning sessions. Another item in the works, is the possibility of an extra water craft so we mighthave three vessels to attack the ship from (as in MAYBE, POSSIBLY, NOT SURE YET). I'll let everyone know as soon as that detail solidifies or not (or when someone reminds me to say something ) Thanks for reminding me about my dropping the ball on that. I do remember now promising to confirm the dates shortly after the annual Ship Volunteer party last month. I'm still hanging on waiting for any information on the possibility of a Friday evening function. On the whole, this event is shaping up rather well... There are a lot more participants coming (even factoring in the usual last minute real life snags), so this should be the greatest Santa Maria pirate adventure yet! Even better, a lot of the new interest is coming from outside of the pub, so this should infuse a fair amount of "new blood" into the event which is usually a change for the better! Not that I wouldn't want more pubbers there ( I really would love to see more of you guys and gals out here), but adding to the whole is great no matter where the addition comes from!
  7. As an FYI for those considering coming to this one, and staying in a hotel (rather than camping out on the ship)... An attendee called me yesterday informing me that he scored an incredible deal on a downtown hotel (about a 15+/- minute walk to the ship). He booked the hotel through Priceline.com and got a hotel that is usually over $100 per night for around $50 per night (I think he mentioned the Holiday Inn Columbus Downtown, Capital Square). Now I want to say here, that Priceline is a negotiation web site, so others attempting this might not get as good of a deal... But for those who wish to try, it might work and get you a much better deal on a room.
  8. I'm going to go out on a limb here, but since the book was translated from French, "Filibuster" in French is an equally appropriate term for "pirate" or "privateer". "Conditions of the Roving" is likely in reference to conditions for engaging in the act of Privateering or Pirating. I hope I am correct in my assumption, but as Mission has the book, his take may clear things up more.
  9. Humourously enough, the Looney Tunes classics keep coming up on my NetFlix suggestion lists... I may just have to start adding them to my queue so I can enjoy them again... It has been many years since I have seen many of them. And I am sure there will be a lot of hidden gems there that don't stand out in my memory. I was always torn on the talking coyote versus the silent version. Both have their charm and appeal, but it is hard for me to reconcile them as the same character despite the shared name.
  10. South Park is something I find to be hit or miss.... Sometimes it is hilarious, other times I find it just degenerates into rather boring "gross-out humour" (which I am not a fan of at all). The first few seasons were good, then followed by a few not-so-good, and then it seems to rotate on an almost on a seasonal basis as to whether it is edgy horribly funny (and very non-politically correct) humour, or gross out stuff. South Park also does a great job at taking some funny pot-shots at Canada, with out coming across as mean spirited or viscous about it... Which I really like... Terrance and Phillip forever!!! As for animation, if I recall the conversations from High School with a friend who was determined to be an animators, I think the lesser animation rate is 8 frames per second as opposed to the 24 frames per second used in the higher quality animations.
  11. If it is for a great coat, I would probably go with Callenish's suggestion for oil cloth/canvas. I just think the great coat just lends itself to being more of a raincoat than a cold weather coat... But that is just my silly take on the matter, and has nothing to do with real history. Another source for oil cloth is Period Fabrics.com (a sub-company of Hamilton Dry Goods)... They usually have great prices and good quality stuff (I have bought other stuff from them numerous times). However, if you decide to check out this company, call them first. I read recently than Mr. Hamilton passed on, so calling them will ensure that things are moving again after his passing.
  12. Good point Callenish, Silas would you clarify whether you are talking rainy stormy bad weather or cold wintery weather, that will make a big difference on the best answer!
  13. Well, I might not be Sterling... But if you look at the capotes (hooded justacorps) of the time, they were made from heavy wools. Also going through the Admirality Contracts of the time, most of the heavy cooler weather wear was also constructed from heavy wools. Modern melton wool doesn't really compare with what they used in period, but is often the best one can get for re-enactment purposes. My warmest garments are made from heavy wool outer, with lighter weight wool linings. While I haven't been out in my gear in complete winter conditions, the cooler late autumn events I have been to in that gear has shown my wool lined with wool garments to be more than good enough.
  14. The wife asked me the same question, but it is too late to consider "pirate romance" for Valentine's day, and what theme would work with a late March deadline? A theme would be fun, we just need to think of one that would work with the time of year, or just a random theme that is not time of year reliant... Or we could say screw conventions and do whatever we want. Ransom puts us up to 6, so if we can find 4 more, we are good to go!
  15. Happy Birthday Ashley!!!! Hope you're having the best one yet!
  16. Of course you can... Just to rehash the basics.... All are welcome, each participant creates 10 cards (all the same or 10 different ones if you prefer, either works). All participants send the cards to the cat-herder (which is looking to be me this time), and then I send each person one card from each artist. Self addressed stamped envelopes are preferred, and we usually put a one month deadline on the cards... Try to keep the cards at about 21/2 inches by 31/2 inches. For a more detailed review as to what this is all about read This Post!... So far that makes about 5 interested folks... Patrick Hand J8ksdad Pew Gunpowder Gertie Michael Bagley Which means we're half way there! (although we could do it with 8 or 9 if we can't scrounge up 10)
  17. Bump... Is this a good time to start rallying for another round of these? Is there enough people interested? Post your interest here, and if enough people are interested we can start a new topic/thread to get another round going (and draw straws on who gets to be the next cat-herder, but I'll volunteer if no one else really wants to).
  18. I think it is looking good so far... But I agree with the comment that the armscythes look a bit too tight and could use some widening. It's hard to tell from that picture, but the linen you are using looks a bit light... Unless that is the lining, in which case it is perfect. Good work so far. Can't wait to see more progress! Hugs right back atcha and the whole Thatcher clan too!
  19. I think by "contact Williamsburg" Sterling was suggesting you email them, not call them... But I could be wrong. It is just in my experience, they respond a bit more friendlier to emails than phone calls (probably because email allows them to respond at their own pace, and doesn't interrupt them from their jobs).
  20. Wow, it's coming back to Ohio that soon! Geez, how lucky can we be?
  21. Happy Birthday Sterling! Kind of sad this will be the first year in a few that I won't see you for a joint Natal Day toast. Hope your having a good time where ever you are!
  22. I'm fairly sure #32 is Jennie G (Mark G's wife). And #57 looks like Ivan Henry/Mooseworth
  23. I've been to most of the events on your list, and it is a good list! And this forum is the best place to find out about most of those events, but for the Havre DeGrace event, you will likely find more up to date information and those closer to the organizing of the event on the Pirate Brethren forum... Hope our paths cross at one of these, or something else!
  24. It is the diary of Martin Lister, the book is titled "A Journey To Paris In the Year 1698" editted and annotated by Raymond Phineas Stearns. It's a 300 page book, so copying it won't likely be of much good. But I can bring it with me this weekend for you to paruse... I should be done reading it by the time I see you in May, so I can pass it on at that point.
