  1. The 2 turtledoves thing was a wax seal. Info and sketches from the online exhibit is here. The phrase is pretty cool, I think; “LE MORT SI IE VOVS PERS” or “’Til Death if it pleases Thee.” Here are some nice replicas available at a pretty reasonable price as a necklace or earrings.
  2. This article makes it sound like it was built for the movie.
  3. Finally got to see this last night! Very interesting. Anyone know where the exhibit is scheduled to go later?
  4. Very sad indeed. They were always a huge crowd pleaser. I remember seeing them my first year performing at KCRF 15 years ago. They haven't performed at KC for many years but every year someone always asks, "where are puke & snot?"
  5. Wow, very interesting database... Several results with the keyword pirate
  6. Here's what Wikipedia has to say. Folkinfo.org also has some historical info. Good song, with tons of versions out there.
  7. LadyB, The very limited camping on-site is for participants only. There is supposedly a campground nearby in Wentzville or another in O'Fallon which is also close by, I don't know anything about these but they may be worth checking into... Pinewoods Park 1500 Pinewoods Dr. Wentzville, Mo 63385 Phone:(636) 327-8248 Cherokee Lakes Campground 3950 Highway 79 O Fallon, MO 63366 (636) 978-2147 The least expensive Motel we've found nearby is around $45-$55/night, it's old but not too bad and only a few of miles from the festival. My experiences there have been better if you request a non-smoking room. Crossroads Heritage Motel 404 N Business Hwy 61 Wentzville, MO 63385 (636) 327-6263‎
  8. Received Kate's book last night. Very fun stuff, really enjoyed a very special treasure map she made.
  9. You've inspired me to try this recipe too... I've made cider, beer, and melomel but haven't tried to make mead because of the expense of so many pounds of honey for a 5 gallon batch and the long wait. With Fall not too far around the corner, here is an easy 1 gallon CYSER recipe, basically a hard cider or melomel made with apple juice and honey. You could probably use the balloon as with your 1 gallon mead recipe... I made batches of this stuff with different concentrates & I liked it with added apple concentrate or cherry best (look in the organic section for frozen juice concentrate without preservatives)... cranberry and grape were not as good in my opinion though they are the author's favorites.
  10. I experienced this... tried to log-in on Saturday morning and my McAffee scanner popped up saying a virus was detected.
  11. Sent mine to Ransom on Friday- Priority Mail Flat Rate. Eagerly watching for Kate's to arrive.
  12. Tandy sells a product called deglazer that can be used before re-dying to remove finishes, etc... I think it is alcohol based so Bloody Jack's technique would probably work too. Since you are starting with a light color and going darker I don't see why you couldn't dye them black... it may take a couple of coats to get an even finish. If you were starting with darker leather & trying to get a lighter color it would be more difficult for sure.
  13. I have 65 pages in my book, that leaves a little over 5 pages per person average, hopefully that's enough.
  14. Ahoy mate, we're still alive and well and yes we do still make the blackbeard style baldric, it's based on the one used in the National Geographic movie... Our website was having some issues with images last night but fortunately, after a long phone call with tech support; it should work now.
  15. Here's a picture of the front of my sketchbook... I got a little creative with the binding to make sure it would lay flat when open. I'm ready to forward it to Ransom around August 1st... got a message from Kate requesting my address & am awaiting her book around the same time... I keep saying it but I can't wait
  16. Just happened upon this Ship Chandler's Box in the Pirate's Magazine webstore and thought I would share... This would definitely be fun to use on the sketchbook project.
  17. I'm really looking forward to get started... then when I started thinking about it, I won't see my own book again for almost a year. Ah, the anticipation! At least we get to add to and enjoy others' books in the meantime. I had a lot of fun making my book. I made the cover out of stiff leather & tooled our 3-bone skull and crossbones design into the front. The pages are made out of a heavy linen resume paper. I tried out a sharpie on the pages, it shows through onto the back but didn't bleed onto the next page. Thank you to the folks who have been through this a time or two for your tips and hints
  18. This is the first I have seen this painting but how hillarious! A man vomiting while about to be burned in the bum by a candle?? So many interesting characters... The proportions are a little strange. Apparently, It's not too far from me; in St. Louis, I'll have to pay it a visit.
  19. If you need someone to take Silkie's place or there's still room for one more, I'd like to join in! I'm in Shawnee, KS (Kansas City area)
  20. Read the topic title and thought it said "Barbossa", I had to click to see why this was in Twill. Interesting flag... I too would like to know more about the symbology and text.
  21. Sounds yummy! Gotta look for this stuff, especially the sticky rum flavor!
  22. Looking good- look forward to seeing your crew again this fall at St. Louis Pirate Fest... If you weren't already aware there is a 1 day Renaissance Festival in Jefferson City next weekend on June 21st. Not sure how far of a day trip that is for you: Jefferson City Ren Fest
  23. Good to see you & Greg on your mutual birthday. You must have made it home safe in the storms!
  24. Just saw this post... boy I look mighty tired, and the picture Rumba took of me at PyrateCon I look asleep too... I swear I'm not always asleep! Nice to meet you again Count & the Lady Constance too, I hadn't made the pub connection either until we met again. Yes Emerald, Arrbucks Coffees is back. Perhaps you'll grace us with your presence on one of these final two weekends of St. Louis? Mad Jack Morgan & 1stMate Matt, hope those pictures aren't too incriminating!
  25. There are a lot of pirates here in the KC area and throughout KS & MO. Feel free to email me: pyrate.leatherworx@gmail.com
