Noice! Well it looks like I'm going to have order one of those Naval lanterns at some point - out of all the garbage I collect, I never thought I would start collecting lanterns. Thanks Mary for egging me on.

Yes William see what you've done, sewing the seeds of chaos... Mary, those look amazing! What ones are they? Open Top? Guard? Just last week I ordered one of Rob's, https://www.robgorrell.com, "Open Top Lanterns". Mine is going to be antiqued though - I might splash a little paint on it and then hit it some steel wool. At some point I'll take pictures and of the "Brass Barn Lantern" I got through Crazy Crow Trading, https://www.crazycrow.com/candle-lanterns. The "Ship Lantern" I ordered from them wasn't in stock - that order is canceled.

Making a full kit in four months

No, I haven't done a burn test as yet, but it looked and felt right. I hear you, places like Goodwill and Salvation Army are horrible. They charge exonerate prices and pick through the better stuff and auction it off on eBay. The little non-name shops are best. I've gotten most of my remnants from the local St. Vincent de Paul mission. Aside from higher quality stuff and better prices, they are literally feeding and clothing homeless peoples in need. It's actually more of a light to medium weight, I initially thought I would make shirts out of it. I'll probably wrap it on a plank and have it laying on a table at Massacre Island - an example of ill gotten gains (thanks to LadyBarbossa for the idea). Here's another linen remnant, it's about one yard by 50 or 60 inches - I think I spent about $6 or $8 on it. It's a drab gray-green - thinking I'll make a snapsack or a larger market wallet with it. -

If someone wants to pay me to go to an event in Morocco, I'l go in chains. If someone doesn't want to pay me, but will cover the cost of passage there - I'd love go! I'm not into the whips and chains scene, but you only live once - I'd give it a try. -

Did someone say thrift shop? I'm sure I heard (read) someone say thrift shop. As I realize that I can no longer sew worth beans, I actually found 6 yards for this stuff for $18... -
Noooooooooooooo

This is so frick'n cool - I wanna go. -
I mentioned in a previous conversation that my tent has a standard (?) 10x10 or 12x12 footprint - no guide lines. I'm planning to make a shade awning, maybe a 12x15 piece of canvas tethered off the side of my tent. In total, a 10x20 footprint with poles and guide lines. I'll update you once I've got it figured out.

For this noble cause, I just purchased 600ft of 1/4 inch (not suppose to be jute) hemp rope - I'm bringing it to Fort Gaines. If any body wants some, let me know.

Anyone need a Mercenary Wench around these parts??
Stynky Tudor replied to Tudor MercWench Smith's topic in Scuttlebutt
Ahoy and Welcome Aboard MercenaryWench, it's great to see you back on the Pub! -
@madPete These are hefty monsters - great job! I recently purchased some of the hardware you've already used on a couple stools. Not sure when I'll get around to it, but cross your finger that I actually make something worth a damn.

Wait wha??? You're not going?

Just what's involved in building a blunderbuss

Captain Sawford, it's my understanding that we will have bunches of space inside the fort (maybe more than we can fill). I know this answer doesn't quantify into measurable square foot numbers just this moment. But it's my understanding that if needed, we also have (overflow) space available to us outside and along the fort walls - near the outer green and along the outside wall on the beach. William is currently collecting everyone's camp/tent foot print size needs and at some point we should have a roughly blocked layout. So let William know what gear you you're bringing and the minimum and maximum space you need.

Hey Swab, does the barrel have a breach plug or is it just solid construction on the back end? -
Wow again! Amazing images - please thank him for the pictures.

Excellent work, that came out nicely. Great job! And thanks for sharing your hardware source. How did you route out the voids for the hardware? Wood chiseled away?
-
Wow, this site is beautiful! It just gets better and better the more I see/find out about it.

Those are very cool - that gives me some ideas.

Nice, got it. Thank you.

Do you have a visual example or scribble that illustrates what you're talking about here? Maybe it's just early in the morning, but I can't figure out what you mean.

From what I saw at the big box store, the hemlock wood grain looks pretty tight/close together - I would assume structurally substantial. The way we harvest new growth pine materials, the grain is looser and has lost a lot of it's structural integrity.

Well after thinking about it for a minute, I decided to cheap out and bought a (square) 2x3 for the ridge and 2x2s for the support poles - cost $9.41 At some point I'll cut to size, knock off the corners with an axe, maybe do a little sanding and then bathe them in linseed oil.
