Staining is fine but then polyurethane/varnish them to seal out moisture especially the ground ends ...the repair works seems relatively minor looks sound enough to shelter you and yours!!!

Quite an attractive carriage there lad(?) even if it is FROGGY ...but then again many a Scotsman utilized French armaments if it meant fighting the English!!! -
In most instances Hollywood costume designers use stereotypical "colonial" dress for their characters if it is after the Musketeer/ECW era. Those of us who have done much research at all know that there were differences and changes that occurred over the late 17th and throughout the 18th centuries....too frequently they use costumes that were made for other projects and retread them to save production costs figuring that most folks in the audience won't notice; and they are usually right. Tricorns at sea aren't the most practical of headwear for working seamen. working in the rigging they would be distracting as they tend to blow off or get knocked off by standing rigging or by running lines .....working the yards I wouldn't want to be concerned about grabbing a hat blowing off my head ....a linen or woolen workman's cap or knit cap(Monmouth, Thrum or Felted Bonnet) would be much more practical as would the headwrap/bandanna style both to stay on and to keep the sweat out of your eyes...IMHO ...what I usually wear in most cases are wool hand block printed paisley scarves/kerchiefs or Scot's Bonnet.

Was hoping we could talk you and Constance into it Silas. You'd have a grand time (I have an extra tent so you wouldn't have to rush fixing yours ) ...Jim, I think you'd love this event; too bad for this year let's see what next year brings!
-
Is that why Grace keeps asking him to"lie to me" late at night in the tent? :D ...the event sounds good to me Dutch

We were thinking about repeating what we did last year which was stopping by Williamsburg (in full kit). We'd love to have any who would like to join in to let us know so that we could meet up and invade the towne in true "sailor" fashion with our wenches in tow. We will be arriving on the Tuesday the second in Williamsburg and we thought a side trip to Jamestown. We met Lily and Edward there by chance last year and had a great time!!!

Looks like Angel's a sweet piece; now all she needs are a few more siblings (say 7 or 9)

If you chose not to go with metal plates to joining the ridge pole you can use simple wooden splints (bevel cut the edges) and bolts with square nuts, since wingnuts wouldn't be period and just make sure you pack a simple wrench to tighten them. I'd also recommend that you take the time to paint your poles to seal out moisture so they don't warp or twist.

It wasn't as if these "sailors" were boarding ships once or twice a day they had long periods where all they were doing was shipboard chores and sailing ships don't spring upon prize ships in instantaneous action. They had to take their time when approaching a possible prize. Crewmen had plenty of time to get and load their weapons before action; it could take them half a day to gain on a prize ship. The level of fear in the opposing crew was usually one of their greatest weapons. From everything I've read the battles seldom lasted all that long since the pirates were heavily crew balanced to fighters whereas the merchantmen were more seaman balanced. the image of every man over the rail carrying 4-6 pistols is over rated. For a boarding raid even one pistol per man, plus their cutlasses or axes, when you are sending 35 to 40 trained fighting men to board a ship with a crew of 20-30 frightened sailors the odds were pretty much in your favour. Just a thought.

From your photo it appears what you have is a modified French wedge tent ...French wedge tents usually have a side door that forms an awning and are larger than the one you show..Tentsmith Double-belled French Wedge they were derived well after the GAOP (early/mid 19th century). It would be an anachronism for a period camp but I doubt many would question you. Good luck, You're going to need more fabric
-
first how wide is your fabric because the tent in your pic uses about 14 yards at the least of most yardages of canvas ....For privacy a simple wedge would give you the most effective use of fabric and give you flap doors on the ends of the wedge.

-
I'll take the chance to peruse them when we come down for Hampton ....been searching for plans for a longboat for over a year now ....I'd like to make a launch the would mount up to 4 swivels and take at least 16-20 men with the option of a sailing rig .....my retirement project

I have taken a small scrap of thick leather and a bit of glue in front of the entry tube at the base of the ramrod channel and made a friction pad to help hold the rod in place ...trim it small and it's almost invisible but it usually holds well
