Pike River Rendezvous July 31 and August 1, 2009 ; 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. August 2, 2009; 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Simmons Island Park, 50th Street and 4th Avenue Step back in time when Native Americans and fur traders gathered to exchange goods and services and to celebrate. Michael and I missed out on last year's Pier Daze (we were voyaging up in the Pacific NW at the time, visiting the Rusty Scupper's Festival instead). But we will be in attendance this year, with our No Quarter Given booth. We look forward to making up for missing out last year, and enjoying lots of music, and piratey entertainment. June 19th & 20th, and 26th & 27th, 2010: 7th Annual New England Pirate Faire Gloucester,MASSACHUSETTS http://www.pastimesentertainment.com/ Time: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Location: Stage Fort Park Historic Gloucester, MA will host Pastimes' annual piratical production with an oceanfront view, realistic cannons, and historical relevance afforded by Stage Fort Park. The faire will feature a cast of over 100 actors and musicians. The festival will also host the “Tortuga Marketplace” for vendors offering pirate clothing, prop weapons, accessories, jewelry, food, refreshments and more. The show will feature a scripted daylong storyline with several interactive scenes with characters drawn from literature and a different time.

Especially when by your own statements you have shown you are untrustworthy. Cap'n Michael and I made it up for Saturday only. A rare pirate event where one could wear their pirate coats and not swelter. In fact I was wearing my heavy wool cloak towards the end of the afternoon, and was quite happy for it. We were warmly welcomed in the pirate camp with Black Hearted Pearl and Gary. Michael joined in the cannon show, while I manned my own little Canon and took many a shot. We were invited for dinner with the gun crew. Boy ... what a dinner!!! Clams, shrimp, fried fish, and huge CRABs spread in a heap on spread out newspapers on the table. Also corn, biscuits, and Key lime pie for dessert. Richard is an AWESOME cook. We were so glad we came. And so glad Pearl and Gary invited us. Thank you. --Jamaica Rose

Greydog, I know you are trying to make a helpful suggestion, and that is appreciated. However there are many restrictions that need to be dealt with. The ending time for the block party portion of the event (9 pm) is due to the fact that the permits for blocking off the street expire at 10 pm. So the block party needs to wind up at 9 pm to give vendors the last hour to pack up and clear off the street before the blockades are removed. The party did not stop at this time though ... most of the party goers moved into Club 195, and some stayed much later in the evening, maybe until closing time. I remember having this discussion with Evan last year, why the block party on the street couldn't last longer, and he was frustrated that the permits for barricading the street were only good until 10 pm, and we have to clear the street by that time. It's not like there is a huge lot of traffic on that street after 10 pm on a Friday night! It was city personnel that came and took the barricades away precisely at 10 pm, so it probably has to do with how late they are willing to stay to officially reopen the street. True, having the event later in the day, or even on a weekend, would allow more people to come, and donate more money. However, the event organizers are working with what is available. The event needs to be on a Friday, because the hospital will not allow the actors to come visit the kids on the weekend. The owner of Club 195 (in Anaheim) donates the use of the facilities for free. The city of Anaheim gives street closure permits, but for only until 10 pm. So pirates ... remember, IT'S A FREE PARTY, with FREE ENTERTAINMENT. Maybe one year wasn't as good as another year in some respects, but better in other respects. Still it was a fun time. I know it is hard for some people to make it, especially with traffic volumes on Friday evenings. Come if you can. Many did. If you couldn't come, maybe you can peruse the multitude of photos from it on MySpace and enjoy it vicariously. It's better to have the event with some people coming, than to have no event at all. Remember ... the main goal is to bring some cheer into the lives of DYING children, and to help raise funds for a worthy cause. And have fun doing it. I for one would just like to say thanks to those who spent many selfless hours of their own time setting up the event (Evan, Viv, Matt, Sam, and probably several others I'm unaware of), and to the musicians who donated their talents for free (Pirates of the Black Swan, Doxie Chix, The Pirates Charles, Mommy's Little Monsters, ... did I forget anyone?), and to the actors and pirate characters who entertain the children and then came to entertain the pirates at the party though some had to leave early due to other commitments(Treva, Maxie, Vinnie, David, Marty, Scarlett, Talderoy, the Spanish Pirate, several Cap'n Jacks, and lots of others I'm sure I'm leaving out), and to the owner of Club 195 for the venue. You say you didn't arrive until 7 pm. The party started much earlier. The event started at NOON!!!!! There were piratey bands playing earlier in the afternoon, with lots of piratey music ... Pirates of the Black Swan, and Doxie Chix for example. The Pirates Charles played too (not sure if you consider them piratey or modern ... I figure they are both, sort of pirate Metallica. The band towards the end, Mommy's Little Monsters, was mostly modern cover tunes. So offering something for pirates and modern music lovers alike. As for the lack of vendors, aye, we could have used more. I tried to help Evan by sending off messages to many of the vendors I know. But with the Big Bear Pirate Fair and Valhalla Renaissance Festival the same weekend, many of the other vendors I tried to recruit were off at those events. To get someone to come set up for a few hours of sales on a weekday afternoon is tricky. Maybe you didn't notice the auction items at first. More announcements throughout the day might have helped. But as auction was drawing to a close, you couldn't help but notice them, for announcement after announcement was made, reminding people to get their bids in. True, maybe by that time it was hard to push through the crowds to see what was there. Also the fact they couldn't take cash but only checks made out to CHOC (due to legal problems from some crazy lady the year before) made it harder. In this age of ATMs, people don't carry checkbooks around with them as much. I forgot to bring my own checkbook, and thus had to mail a check in on Monday. True, last year's party had a few more vendors, but I think this year's party had much better offering of music. With the stage out on the street, but within easy view of the bar's patio, I think that really opened things up, rather than keeping the music inside the crowded bar. Remember ... this was a FREE event (you didn't need to pay anything to attend), organized by an all volunteer crew. --Jamaica Rose

Shiver me timbers and boarders away... Fashion: Historical or Piratical attire is required for this Ball, either historic reproduction attire or at least a modern attempt at looking piratical. Wear piratical or nautical attire or any historic attire from the 1650s to the 1820s. Alternately dress modern but with piratical touches such as a bandana over the head or an eye patch. Some male pirates wore loose skirts. This could be an option for those who don't have slops or breeches. Other than fashion exceptions particular to this Ball, the rest of our We Make History "House Standards" still apply. Music & Dance: Featuring "Bahama Becky" along with "The Plankwalkers", the music will be live and lively and the dancing an enjoyable mix of simple historic styles which we will teach. (After all, most pirates probably didn't know much beyond a jig or two!) Booty: There will be light refreshments and a number of excellent (and thematic) door prizes will be given away. Everyone attending will receive a ticket with a year on it from the age of piracy.
