Bigger ship, smaller shares .. Hmm... Now that's when size really matters!
-
I always thought it wasn't the size of your ship but what you did with it that mattered. ;-) I have heard of pirates with small sloops taking on much bigger vessels. :-) Personally I'd take what ever I could get my little hands on!

Little ole' me?! You're the one who has the pirate ancestor! It's in your blood! :) Come on admit Zorg

I have friends who have a pirate guild called the Ravenheart. For years they had asked me to join and I finally did. Since I'm the type if I am going to do something I'm going to do it right I started studying about pirates. I am fortunate enough to work in a research library with a good selection of books on pirates and piracy. It is also fortunate that the head of the Research Div. is an authority on the subject (specialzing in Capt Kidd) and loves to be asked questions. I found the subject fascinating and my thrist for knowledge on the subject unquenchable. So I joined an academic e-list on piracy (that's where I know Foxe from) and lurked for a while till I was sure a I wouldn't make an absolute fool of myself and got involved with the discussions. I also met Jamaica Rose and another PRPs on the list and they invited me invited me to PRP events. Soon they were asking me when I was going to join PRP. That is how got involved with the Port Royal Privateers. :) I am still involved with both groups but more active in PRP. Oh yes! I was also one of the original St. Dymphna Sea Dogs at the Renissance Pleasure Faire.

The closet thing to a period pirate treasure chest I've ever seen is the chest from the Driscoll Piracy auction that I have mentioned here in other topics. It is purported to have belonged to Capt. Tew. Here's the catalog description with the estimated and realized price Lot# 156 was: A heavily painted iron strong box, probably 17th century, probably German, the exterior decorated with painted florals, birds, and the occasional angel in a Spanish style, the flat recessed hinged lid carrying a large and elaborate internal lock mechanism working independent bolts and covered by a plate engraved with sprays and mermaid[?] figures, operated with a key through a central keyhole at the top, a dummy keyhole on the front panel, twist drop handles on either end, the interior painted orange and a smaller locking compartment along one side. 470x835x460mm Estimated price $8,000.00-$12,000.00 Realized price $63,450.00!!!!!! Here a link to a photo of it http://www.christies.com/lwa/dec00/page3.html It was boutght by the guy who's building the pirate museum in Key West. As you can see it a very sturdy chest. not a bit of wood and flat on top. A far more secure thing to keep booty in! :)

Many happy return upon your natal day Master Hawkyns!

What would be the grade of the pilot that piloted the Lady Washington through the Panama Canal (as in "Diary of a Ship" in the POTC DVD) ?

Captain G Doesn't mean you can pull into port down here and say hello! :)

Another thing to be aware of is that officers (including petty officers)wives ofter accompained thier husbands aboard naval vessels. They also oftern served as nurses and even help load the guns during battles. This was from the 17th c. through the 19th c. There's a Mariner's Mirror article on it that I will dig up.

So that's who bought that chest! I wondered after the Christie's Driscoll Piracy Library auction who bought it. The estimated price was $8,000.00-$12,000.00 Went for get this ..... $63,450.00!!!!!! This man defiantely has the bucks to do this! :) Hmm I winder if he bought Tew sword as well...?

Zorg you're lecherous scurvy dog. And those are your good points! I loved the movie and even more so do I think Leonard Maltin is a schumck. The acting was great especially Pan, Wendy, and Hook. Brian Froud's conceptual art design shown through Pan's Puckish appearnce and the mermaids' creepy appearance (mermaids really aren't nice!). If I could get a petite female size version of Hook's costume I'd love it! A wonderful film! :) It was great to see my friends Gary & Bonnie Morgan in the credits. Gary was Pan's stunt double and his daughter Bonnie was Wendy's stunt double.

And the cool office!

I thought I had mentioned Lady Killigrew in another post (or was that another topic?). On the above said boarding party she killed a man and was tried for murder. Considerable bribes were paid and she was aquitted. The family never quite recovered from the financial strain of those bribes no matter how much piracy they engagaed in.

How do people come up with s**t like this? Geez give the writers more credit than that! I mean some of these rumors are just plain silly! The script comes when it comes and any speculation is just that, speculation. :) I'd rather wait for a good script than anticipate a bad one. I feel sorry for Iron Bess who has to deal with quelching these rumours!

I think it was Leonard Maltin that Charlotte is refering to not Ebert. I guess all those critics look a like. I saw the review too and wondered if either critic ever read Peter Pan as a kid since most what they were objecting to was in the book and the original stage play that Barrie wrote. I haven't seen it yet and I am looking forward to seeing since Zorg gave it a six thumbs up. :)

And bikers too! I was just trying to remember the pirates. Heck! I forgot there were pirates in Lord of the Rings till I saw Return of the King! I need to reread those books.
