  1. I wonder; under Austrian law was the finder allowed to keep the treasure? I'm guessing not, given that the government is giving all the interviews and the finder doesn't even want to be identified.

What if this happened in America? I think that in America the land owner usually owns whatever turns up on his land. Certainly the land ower owns all the mineral rights to oil, gold, and suchlike valuable stuff that is buried under his land, but I'm not sure if archaeological finds are treated the same way.

Contrast to medieval Europe, where King Richard the Lion Heart got himself killed fighting with one of his vassals over the right to the gold the vassal found on his land.

With that in mind do you think the government will at least pay him fir what it might be worth?

  2. Left shoulder has a tribal wolf that I designed.

I am currently refining the design of my next.

The difference between tattoos and scars . . .Scars are tatoos with better stories

I have plenty of scars. Each with a story.

  3. Blackbeard: America's Most Notorious Pirate

    by Angus Konstam

I found this as a good read on Teach. It drew a lot of suppositions and theories on the blank spaces in the known history. I actually read this with the Blackbeard chapter of Captain Johnson's A General History of the Robberies and Murders of the Most Notorious Pirates and Under the Black Flag by David Cordingly. I like to cross-reference any piracy history with this book just so I can make my own postulations and theories. I would suggest this to anyone.

  4. The last photo was of a contest I enter at St. Pat's. Out of the six years I have entered I won five times. I plan on making a new vest and maybe a new long coat but I haven't found a material that speaks to me.

  5. Alright I think I will post a very brief set of pictures of my attire. But I think I will first do something kinda fun. I am going to post my first pirate costume that was the tip of the iceberg that got me into pirate enthusiasm. Mind you I always loved pirates but this costume started me living pirate.

After that I began to modify it after the image of Sparrow.

After getting tired of the Jack Sparrow comments I began to forge my own persona, James Smythe and have been breaking free of Jack elements. Before too much criticism comes my way for it still looking a lot like Jack these steps are small. But the basic idea is I am keeping what I like and changing out what I do not. The long coat is only good in winter. I like bucket boots so I upgraded them. I have two tricornes now. One desidely ship worthy and one that is not weather protected but looks really nice. The trews became green canvas. I made a belt and belt bag. Right now my bandana is a spare blue scrap (amazing how a different bandana stops the Jack references) until the hand dyed green one is done. I wear a piece of eight around my neck (off the Atocha wreck). I should in a few weeks be getting a package with a cartridge box and a few more things. I also have a ship's candle lantern coming in.

And for those that might want to see a different side.... these are my pyrate trews in a different setting.

  6. A quick question as it may be to all:

As life finds me I have an interest in finding pyrate crews to affiliate with for the areas I find myself with. During the time I was in Atlanta I found the Atlanta Pirate and Wench Guild. I find myself in Mid-Missouri and Northwest Florida in great quantity and was also looking to find possible crews to affiliate with the area. As I see myself I am more of a wandering pyrate. Any aid would be appreciated.

  7. I agree with William on this. If the reports of Blackbeard's death are to be believed, Blackbeard died upon Lt. Maynard's ship, after fighting Maynard sword to sword. I would think that Blackbeard's sword would have been claimed as a prize by one of the surviving sailors under Maynard's command, if not given as a gift to Maynard himself.

I would rather have to agree with this assumption.

I agree as well. I read too much on Teach to not question this.

  8. So I have been looking around at sailboats for a while for later in life and started to think maybe I should look at boats that I could enjoy by myself if no one felt up to a cruise with me. I came across this maker of gaff rigged dingies. As much as being a pyrate in a dingy sounds demeaning these look like good fun. Does anyone have any input on these or just sailing one-man sailboats.

  9. Ahoy, and welcome Smythe. Glad ye came to this fine piratical establishment. Shall look forward to more conversations with ye.

Aye! Bo be in that state, as is Silas Thatcher, Wes be near there. A few others, if I'm not mistaken. He's in good company with all we landlocked pirates.

If ye don't mind my askin', where in Missouri be ye, Smythe?

Again, Welcome, Smythe. I'm neighbor to ye, so t' speak, up here in th' Land Between Two Rivers aka Iowa.

I know that there be a Pirate Fest in St. Louis. Plus some pirates gather at Fort de Chartres (coming up the first weekend in June) down around that area. If ye fancy a roadtrip, Pirates of Paynetown (if they have it this year), the Port Washington Pirate Fest (north of Milwaukee, WI) and a pirate fest in Michigan as well. Others around if I recall, too. Midsouth Buccaneers has some of that info.

There be a couple of good events around.

Ye be in grand company, good Smythe! ;)

Round abouts in Rolla. I do plan on at least the St. Louis Pirate Festival.

  10. Ahoy and greetings to all,

I be a little known pillager known as James Smythe. Growing up on the gulf gave me an early intrigue to pyracy in its forms and the habits grew healthy. Currently I have been land-locked but I due make my pilgrimages back when I can. I came in hopes of finding a community to aid in my needs for pillage and plunder.
