  1. Friday, we're crashing with family, then heading to the Aquarium for the tour. Saturday night, we're booked at the Admiral Fell Inn, so we were planning on driving from downtown to the Inn, getting changed, and walking over to One Eyed Mikes ... I'm so excited I can hardly stand it! It's me birthday weekend, so I'm going to have a blast!
  2. Will there be tall ships in the harbor that weekend?
  3. History of glass eyes. I know that before WWII, glass eyes were mostly made by German glass blowers, who would travel around to fulfill orders in both Europe and the U.S. But this site has instances of glass eyes from Egyptian and rennaisance days, too. I have a few glass eyes, myself, just as a curiosity.
  4. I can't wait, it sounds like it will be a blast. Should we bring our own tankards, or do the pubs discourage that?
  5. I think this topic should be moved to "I Stole it From a Drag Pirate"
  6. I find the feedback commentary an interesting milepost to the human condition. Which one of you wags was running amok over there? From http://www.zappos.com/n/p/p/7135675.html These boots hold up well to getting soaked - I have a pair of boots like this in size 14. I like to swim/wade/shower in them. I've been doing this in them for about a year and they are holding up well. Size 14? My guess is it it weren't a wench in them!
  7. My Sidekick II. It kinda sucks as a phone, hard to hear anyone, but that's okay, cuz I hate talking on the phone. But it's my address book, my calendar, photo album, camera, web browser, memo book, it's even got a little flashlight! I have Tetris, Pacman, Soduko, Mahjong, some rocket game and a paint program. I could have a few more games or apps, too, if I wanted them. I just have to get a solar charger for beach days, and I'm good.
  8. Um, the folks in the Captain Twill forum will tell ya that a leather tricorn isn't authentic. Noquartergiven.net has a list of merchants that have some good stuff, and The MacKay has some very good tricorns, even treated with wax and oil to withstand the weather. I'd do a few searches of this site, in Captain Twill and Plunder, and collect opinions. It will help you make the choices that work for your purposes.
  9. A lot o' people don't realize what's really going on. They view life as a bunch o' unconnected incidents 'n things. They don't realize that there's this, like, lattice o' coincidence that lays on top o' everything. Give you an example; show you what I mean: suppose you're thinkin' about a plate o' shrimp. Suddenly someone'll say, like, plate, or shrimp, or plate o' shrimp out of the blue, no explanation. No point in lookin' for one, either. It's all part of a cosmic unconciousness.
  10. Your imagination is not far off, love. And I'm flattered. :) Curly and brown, okay, but shoulder length???
  11. Galaxy Quest! I'd tell you the character's name (the "Spock" guy) but I didn't want to cheat and look it up.

  13. Sufjan Stevens' Come On, Hear The Illinoise. Song called "John Wayne Gacy, Jr." Now I'm all freaked out and don't want to go out to the parking lot by myself.
  14. Try sending a PM to one of the Admins of the site. I see BloodyBuckets is logged in nearly every morning.
  15. Hmmm, probably piratesque street clothes (capris with stripy socks, buckle shoes ((yes, those 13 pairs of Doc Marten maryjanes do come in handy)), and some sort of pirate- or nautical-themed top .... ) and my greeeeeen tricorn from the MacKay! Gyaaarrrr! Oh, and I'm so excited, a bunch of my seahorse buddies and me are getting a tour of a seahorse aquaculture facility run by the syngnathid specialist from the National Aquarium! Which, for those of you who are not fish geeks, is a cool thing. I might even get the specialist guy to come to the pub crawl!
  16. A little early, but real and cheap.
  17. Only found some English half-groats here.
  18. Breast buttons? Sounds like body modification of a most uncomfortable kind. However, many's the time I've been at the beach and wanted a place to stow my car key ... a "breast pocket" with buttons might be handy. As for the foul laundry ... well, makes my ighs water just thinking about it.
  19. I am also in love with Gabriel Byrne, Colin Firth, Gene Kelly, that guy I met at the New England Aquarium that time, and Atticus Finch (both the Gregory Peck version and the one I created in my mind when I read the Harper Lee novel).
  20. I didn't see a place to register, am I missing a link on the Invasion site? I'm warning ya right now, aside from my tricorn, I will NOT be in period attire. I'll be hand-stitching that when the patterns are available, and I'm in no hurry for all that sewing ... I will be meeting up with some reef club friends there, so the fish geeks can meet the Pyrates! Aarrr!
  21. *greenighs sheepishly removes her red neckerchief Dammit, and I just ordered ten yards of blue wool & checked linen, not to mention the all the taffeta ...
  22. I am passionately in love with Captain Tall Mike Bismuth van der Bulge, bless his pegs and hooks.
  23. Yup, you're completely wrong, Kass. The sum total of your evidence was woodcuts of landsknechts. Greenighs threw one of the top sources on pirates back at you. Strawman arguments like "back to bucket boots" suggest that you don't have any real evidence to refute Greenighs with. If you've got evidence instead of strawmen, show it. Daniel, don't use me for ammunition (please). I can understand where you're coming from, certainly, but my posts were not about refuting Kass, only to show how even well-meaning (beginner) "pirates" who do research can come up with conflicting information! If I'd never been on this site and had only read Cordingly and/or the books he cites in those endnotes, I'd be building a different pirate persona entirely, from what I'd be putting together from information gained from the Pyracy.com forums. That WAS where I was going with my posts. When I was reading Under the Black Flag and came upon those paragraphs, I was kind of excited to post, just to show that it's not my imagination, or Hollywood, but even real books paint that kind of picture of the fancy Pirate! That was what was in my mind when I was posting, not, "Aha! Now I've got ya!" If that's how it goes around here, fine. I'm not gonna call foul. But I won't hold myself to playing nice-nice and tiptoeing around the "more period than thous" (to borrow a phrase I read somewhere), either, if they get to dump on me.
