Catalog of Crews

Thanks mate, I will also get the info for the other members of the Brood for you. -
From the album: Pirate Art
Again This Pirate ship of the line of French origin had an excessive story about her. I reversed my usually favored color combo of black hull, red sails and based the quartergalleries loosely on those in a drawing of a ship near the end of one of my books. I drew her at a time when I was enthralled with ships of the line under pirate command after seeing screenshots for Pirates of the Burning Sea but being unable to play the game. I realize now in re-examining her, she'd likely be top-heavy, I still like the design though.-

From the album: Pirate Art
I wrote a whole elaborate story about this French ship. I designed her rig after the HMS Mordaunt. I have seen the crescent shaped blades on her yards depicted in a couple of my books. As near as the the author could tell, they were likely used to slice through rigging of ships coming alongside to board -
Catalog of Crews
Dread Pyrate Greyhound replied to Black Syren's topic in Find a Crew or Introduce One
I am a member of two crews. One is a guild called the Devil's Brood Pyrates, and is made up of multiple crews from around the US. We have members in Ohio, and Virginia, each state is headed by a Chapter/State Commodore, we do anything from re-enactments to performing, but require members to have a certain level of historical authenticity. One chapter, is also made up of vendors and performers who travel from state to state and festival to festival, and are called the 'Roving Fleet'. We can be reached on our facebook here: https://www.facebook.com/thedevilsbroodpyrates?fref=ts My personal crew is called 'The Knights of the Black Flag' which is a re-enactment/ performing troop dedicated to romantic and realistic pirate portrayals from 1660-1690 or so. In other words, We are based in reality, but also do pyrate fantasy. The Knights of the Black Flag are also, as the name implies, do portrayals of honorable, but formidable pirates, and members of the Knights have to agree to having their personas abide by an invented code for our crew, we have a facebook page, but it isn't public yet as the Knights only has one member. Anyone can message me for details for either. -
Homemade is good? that's awesome! I'm an artist, so I was hoping I could join and do a drawing.

Captain Morgan all the way. -
Is anyone familiar with a pirate named 'John Derdrake' ? I have only found reference to him three times. twice on a pirate website, and once in a picture of old pirate trading cards. Supposedly he was a pirate and shipwright who plundered in the baltic between Sweden, Denmark, and England and commanded a 70 gun ship called the 'Sudden Death' he settled in Stralsund but was captured when he ventured into another port and was hanged. This info came from the website I mentioned. I'm curious because my persona commands an 80 some gun ship and I'm curious because I believed this was impossible till now. Of course there is the obvious chance he was invented to feed a public obsessed with pirate lore, but I could be wrong and he was more of a local legend. The article certainly made him seem like a small time pirate.

Thanks mates! The top three are from my guild's photoshoot. It's an open event we're doing annually from now on.

is something homemade acceptable?

hmm, are they thick? try getting some suede and hand stitching it a fancy suede cutout on it. I recommend hand stitching because you can force the needle through with a thimble and if it proves difficult you get a feel for it and decide whether or not you wanna continue. You could also get some lace and put it on to make it fancier, the logo shouldn't be too noticeable.

I have fond memories of the Nina. back when I was really young, before I knew anything about the pirate community and kids gave me grief over my obsession, it was anchored in Fairport Harbor near my hometown. My mom and dad took me and i even wore the pirate costume I had at the time! inspired by Jim Hawkins, of course, and made friends with one of the sailors on board named Daniel. we had a lot of fun. I was so sad to leave but at the end, I couldn't believe it, Daniel gave me his monkey's fist necklace! For many years I wore it, until i outgrew it and had to cut it off. i still have it though.

all this is a convincing argument that there might've been pirate ships with red or black sails! I wouldn't doubt Blackbeard in his mastery of psychological warfare might've used these techniques both for practical purposes, but also for intimidation of enemies! maybe even coating his ship's hull in tar for protection from the elements! giving the impression of a black pirate ship! Although he also might've toned it down a bit for the element of surprise too...

What did merchants and pirates put in the poop?
Dread Pyrate Greyhound replied to Daniel's topic in Shipwright
I've found references to it being called the 'Roundhouse' cabin and was devided into two or even three smaller cabins for wealthier passangers. -

put more leather on to cover it, and cut it in a fancy pattern in a different color, as a sort of trim, or hide the ends my wearing bracers over them.

I'd shorten it for use at sea, and then it could be a vanity thing for wanting a rapier, but at the same time practivcal .. Unless you're doing a more fantasy thing, at the same time, it could be a dress sword.

I've always heard of it being in the forecastle in larger ships and fore on smaller ships.

Traditional End of Photoshoot Hat and Sword Pic
Images added to a gallery album owned by Dread Pyrate Greyhound in Pub Members Gallery
A suggestion to get a pic of a hat on a sword, turned into a lineup of hats and swords, which has now become our traditional last pic for what will be an annual event. At the end, we'll take a pic of hats and swords of all the photoshoot participants.
