  1. All I know is after years of searching I finally found a place in NC that offers straight razor shaves. Turns out in NC it is illegal for a salon with a requirement of a cosmoltolgy licience to offer straight razor shaves due to the possibility of blood dieseses but Barbers are not held under the same rules. The place I go to is off the beaten track so to say and does not advertise but relies on word of mouth. Greg, the head barber is actually one of the proffesors at teh Barber college in Greensboro NC and does an excellent job. If you have never had the "full treatment" so to say with a straight razor shave I highly recommend it. I can't afford to go more than once, maybe twice a month ($45 a visit) but it's definitly worth it when I can go
  2. I know there were a alot of what you would call "snake oil" remedies advertised during this time period as well and I wonder what type of chemicals besides mercury were used for a lot of so called "treatments of veneral diesese that would have been more deadly than the infliction itself
  3. Reading all this makes me feel like in my present condition, if I had been on a ship during the GAOP I would opt to just be shot instead of treatment....(Hip replacement, Back Fusion and Lumbar displacement surgies would not have been fun.)
  4. I'll check inside to see. I wanted to restore it but wasn't sure if that would destroy any value it has (if any)
  5. I don't have a pic yet but I will post one soon. I was hunting around this weekend for a new project and found a very unique wooden jewelry box at my local antique store. It's a wooden box with a black leather cover with a metal tall ship on it. Inside is red velvet and slats placed inside for what I assume is jewelry storage. The weird part is there are no makers mrks anywhere on it and it has a FM radio built into the box with two dials on the right side. Just curious if anyone has seen one of these before.
  6. No one really knows Capt. Scurvy's real name since, well, he was never given one. he was left on the steps of the local orphange in Bristol in 1686 with a hastily written note that simply read "I got enough problems!". He was arrested at a very young age for impersonating a man of the cloth and was only released from prison due to a press gang looking for able bodied men to join the Queens Navy regardless of their thoughts on the matter. It wasn't long before life aboard a navy vessel made the man long for his days in prison so when their ship was attacked by pirates it was Scurvy who shot his own Capt and then asked to join the crew before the battle was even over. A few years later he was given his own ship and a small crew and became a successfull rum runner and pirate. still haven't decided on the rest of the story yet....
  7. Now there's an interesting topic. What great moments in history or sociology would not have occured without massive amounts of alcohol involved?...
  8. They haven't caught me yet, although I have been absent from most events this year so I'm sure a hunting they will go when I do make it to an event in the future
  9. Yeah they were not too happy about it but we got more people to stop and ask to take our picture that day then at any other event we've done. I still get letters from time to time from people wanting to join the Fraternal Order of Rakish Deviants
  10. Thanks. Most of my names for everything I've done has come from some incident (good or bad) with the public or the people in charge of an event. We did a ren faire one year (I will leave the name out to protect the guilty) and one of our members was verbaly chastised by another faire employee for a small piece of velcro being visiable on his outfit. He was quite and took the beating and then told me about it later that day. We were watching a demonstration later put on by the same person and you could tell the sheild he was using was a trash can lid. Instead of pointing out the fact that the word "Hefty" was visable we went to a junkyard that afternoon and bought everything ew could find with the Ford logo on it and made a bunch of outfits and called ourselves the Fraternal Order of Rakeish Deviants, or the Knights of FORD. Needless to say we were not welcomed with cheers adn laughter from that one particular group but everyone else thought it was absolutly brillent. The Order has been in exsistance for over 6 years now.
  11. Funny video of my son's ability to overact when it comes to the taking his daily medication
  12. The name "Capt Scurvy" was given to me by my old crew. I had a jacket that was made for me by a very sweet lady who owned a dress shop in town but really didn't have the same taste in fabric as me. She made it for no charge so I was of course very gratefull and polite about it, even though it was white with lime green embrodery and a light green lining. One of my fellow pirates said it looked like I was a walking advertisment on how to prevent scurvy and the name stuck. Our travelling pirate carnival called Capt Scurvy's Carnival of Senseless Debauchery got it's name from a very upset patron at one of our early shows. He was an older man, in his 80's and came up to me after a show and said that was the most disturbing display of senseless debauchery he had ever seen and our name was born
  13. All very good points and it is an intersting question. The one thing I have learned in my research and portrayll of Blackbeard for years is there was never any real rhyme or reason to alot of his actions other than to keep his crew guessing. In my opinion, Teach was a master of psychological warfare and his methods reflected this "madness" neccesary to be effective along those lines. As far as Bonnet goes, it may have been simply because Teach knew how innept he Stede was as a pirate and showed him mercy knowing he would be captured sooner than later and wanted to make sure Bonnet would not turn states evidence out of a sense of loyalty. Just a thought.
  14. Mine used to be my favorite pic of me as Blackbeard at the Gold Coast Pirate Festival but since I shaved off the beard I decided to change it to the pic James Callahan took of me at the Hampton Festival back in 2009
  15. I have 4 1/2 yards of white linen left over from a recent project if anyone is interested. I haven't bought it in a while so I really don't know what the average price is right now but make me an offer (shipping and handling may be a bit more than usuall due to weight) to buy or possibly trade.
  16. Now I have another reason to try and make it to Beufort. Welcome to the pub.
  17. Really wish I could have been there this year. Seems like this year is just not working out for me to make many events but Ethan is getting better about listening to directions and knowing his boundries as far as how far he can walk around before loosing sight of Dad so it might be time to bring him to his first event in Beufort. Anyone want to volunteer to adopt a 6 yr old autistic powder mokey? Really will make it next year though. To everyone that did go, I hope you experienced the same hospitality from Capt. Sterlings crew and Pete and Dutch that I have in the past. This event has always felt like a second home to me and I am very gratefull to all involved for taking in a crewless Capt. To Sterling, sorry your crew did not have the chance to "capture" me this year. We can always extend the challange to next year though...
  18. Now that I have finally finished the "art room" in my house I have started painting again. Been a while but was glad to know that after 2 hours of practicing I haven't lost all my skill. Would like to work on some portraits for a while so if anyone has a favorite pic they want to send me I would love to paint a few of the pub members. No charge if you like the way it turns out and want me to send it to you. You can e-mail me the pics at csuttle3@gmail.com
  19. Little bit of a change since I saw you last. Have you been hanging around Capt. Sterling recently?
  20. Try contacting David Moore at the NC Maritime museum. He's always been a great source of info for me.
  21. If I can work it out with my son's schedule I am gonna try to make it this year
  22. Don't have a new pic yet but I wrapped the hande in brown leather and added a plastic tube running from the Co2 cartridge into the side of the pistol. tinkering with a way to put colored water in the tube. I used icefridge tubing because it makes small air bubbles in the water when you fill it that give the appearance of flowing water
  23. Not really sure how this one started out, I think it was just a late night project of "let's see what happens when we glue this to that!" but I am almost finished with my small steampunked snub nosed .38. It's been fun to work on, but not something that really fits into the rest of my costume pieces so if anyone is interested in it let me know. http://www5.snapfish.com/snapfish/thumbnailshare/AlbumID=1733374028/a=2687490028_2687490028/otsc=SHR/otsi=SALBlink/COBRAND_NAME=snapfish/
  24. So I don't know if ths will work withall toy guns, but I made an intersesting discovery while taking apart a toy ray gun for a steampunk project. It had a cool looking white tube at the top that lets of a very small red light and then a very annoying sound effect. Neat thing happened when I cut the wires attached to the speaker and took the speaker out. When you pull the trigger the light was now 70% brighter. Guess it ad something to do with the power not having to split between the speaker and the LED. If you have a chance try it and see if it works on your next project.
