  8. A Sailor's Promise A young woman in New York was so depressed that she decided to end her life by throwing herself in to the ocean. She went down to the docks and was about to leap into the frigid water when a handsome young sailor saw her tottering on the edge of the pier, crying. He took pity on her and said, "Look, you have so much to live for. I'm off to Europe in the morning, and if you like, I can stow you away on my ship. I'll take good care of you and bring you food every day." Moving closer, he slipped his arm round her shoulder and added, "I'll keep you happy, and you'll keep me happy." The girl nodded yes. After all, what did she have to lose? Perhaps a fresh start in Europe would give her life new meaning. That night, the sailor brought her aboard and hid her in a lifeboat. From then on, every night he brought her three sandwiches and a piece of fruit, and they made passionate love until dawn. Two weeks later, during a routine inspection, she was discovered by the captain. "What are you doing here?" the captain asked. "I have an arrangement with one of the sailors," she explained. "I get food and a trip to Europe, and he's screwing me." "He certainly is," the captain said. "This is the Staten Island Ferry."

  10. the history of pirates by Angus Konstam is my favorite it has a nice summary on many pirates and groups from the bronze age to modern times and chapters on various other piratical topics.and LOTS of pictures.makes reading history a pleasure. the Ashley book of knots is a must have.enough ropework in there ta keep ya busy for a lifetime. I love my time life set on the seafareres-with volumes on the spanish main, pirates, fighting sail, clipper ships, whalers and others. under the black flag-a modern pirate history classic. she captains and hen frigates by joan druett-all about women at sea american merchant seaman's manual by cornell maritime press-eds. cornell/hoffman-1942-has lots of practical ship knowledge. I have lots of other books dealing with nautical themes, these are just the best of the group. have to dig up my favorite pirate fiction later-can't remember all the author's names.
  11. there is nothing quite like the sound of all the car alarms going off after a nice big cannon boom.
  12. The following is, purportedly, the transcript of an ACTUAL radio conversation between a United States' naval ship and Canadian authorities off the coast of Newfoundland. Canadians: Please divert your course 15 degrees to the South to avoid a collision. Americans: Recommend you divert your course 15 degrees to the North to avoid a collision. Canadians: Negative. You will have to divert your course 15 degrees to the South to avoid a collision. Americans: This is the Captain of a US Navy ship. I say again, divert YOUR course. Canadians: No. I say again, YOU divert YOUR course. Americans: This is the aircraft carrier USS Lincoln, The second largest ship in the US Atlantic Fleet. We are accopanied by 3 Destroyers, # Cruisers and numerous support vessles. I demand that you change your course 15 degrees north. I say again that is 1 5 degress north or countermeasures will be undertaken to ensure safety of this ship. Canadians: This is a lighthouse, sir. Your call.

  14. I just had the mixed pleasure of watching muppet treasure island. it is a delightfully sick piece of work. :) my reactions were a mixture of laughing histerically, staring in shock and horror and lusting after Tim Curry as long john silver I don't know which was worse;kermit as capt smollett or miss piggy as benjamin gunn I just love the captain's clothes that lj silver wears. beautiful hat that has just the right amount of rich looking trim. gorgeous captain's coat. and of course his charmingly evil smile and laugh. I recomend it as a first rate pirate comedy/spoof.
  15. thankee Capt.William, I didn't realize that they went back that far. I thought they were more 1600-1700-but I don't really have much solid historical data to support it. there is a modern norwegian thrum cap that has the thrum fibers on the inside.
  16. I'm lookin fer any like minded pirates in the Portland Oregon area. there are several sca pirate/nautical groups here but I havn't found a later period pirate group.I'm hopin to find anyone interested in the great age of sail here abouts.
  17. A pirate galleon’s slave driver looked down at the galley slaves as they struggled with the enormous oars of the ship and bellowed, "I have some good news and some bad news." "The good news is that you all will receive double rations tonight and tomorrow morning!" The surprised (and hungry) slaves immediately began cheering, but their shouts were interrupted by the slave driver... "The bad news is that right after breakfast the Captain wants to go water-skiing!"
  18. waaaaaaaaaa hooooooooooooooooo!!! ...er...I mean...Aarrrgggghhh me matey. that was a mighty fine thing ya did fer me! I just love the upgrade! all the space and no loading delays due to ads! I had no idea it would make such a big difference. 19. glad to see this as a separate topic. I LOVE HATS!!! my favorite is the thrum cap. does anyone know the origins of the thrummer and what time period(S) it was worn in. I have one that I made-crotcheted it and then latchhooked the fibers on,after which I felted the inside to keep the fibers in place. here is a link to a site that has a rough picture of one; http://www.247e.info/webs/qualitycaps.co.u.../main/caps1.htm
  20. A Boater's Blessing... from Days of Yore May there always be water under your boat, May she always be seaworthy and ever afloat, May your bilge pump be certain to work all night and all day, May your compass and charts always show the safe way, May you find gentle harbor as every day ends, May you lower your anchor amidst peace and good friends. A Boater's Blessing...Nowadays May your outdrive be saved after hitting that rock, May your bow be rebuilt after ramming your dock, May you find your new watch that fell overboard, May your neighbor quit stealing your slip's power cord, May Lysol mask the musty smell under your berth, May you someday owe less than the damn boat is worth.
