  1. Short and Sweet. Time Bandits. Need I say more?
  2. Oh no, we LOVE the concertina in our singing group!... it sounds really pleaseing on most all of the hauling shanties. Squeeze away woman! I have no idea how people play this thing well. I'm having difficulty with even "Blow the man down". Although I have mastered "Drunken Sailor" and "Taps". LOL but I am trying for more =) Yaaaaaaar!
  3. My Avatar is "Smilin Stan" from monkey island. He sells crappy boats at terrible prices. He's a used car salesmen in every way. YaaaaaR! I got a ship to sell you guys =)
  4. I've made a few posts so far but I forgot to introduce myself. I live in Cali and I'm just getting into the whole pirate lifestyle. I did Civil War reenacting for some years, but got tired of dirty looks (I was confederate, wanna fight?) Anyway, nice to see a forum like this exists and many good times to you all.
  5. Concertina (poorly) and guitar (also poorly). I know concertinas are not period but they play shanties so well =)
  6. Yaaaar. Also, feel free to shout anything you like. I be accepting Aaaaaye! or the traditional AaRRRRR! or even the rare: "Shiver me timbers 'tis the black spot, I be not afraid of thee Blind Pew. Belay the mainbrace Squire Trelawney this be my ship now. Argh! A tranquillizing dart fired by the cowardly BBC health department dogs ... they've done filled me full of chlorpromazine damn!"
  7. Tired. Too many engagements and not enough plunderin' time.
  8. Yaaaaaaaaaar! To explain, sometimes a pirate just needs to say Yaaaaaar and get it out of the system. Here is the place! Give a good'n I promise you will feel better. (not an actual guarantee)
  9. Thank You Sir. I was looking at other posts about these encampments but non the of the links worked. I was very happy to see yours did =) Now, for a bit o' reading.
  10. Hello All, I'm trying to gather enough information to build a tent out of a piece of sail. Now my nautical knowledge is limited, so I don't know where to begin. I don't need anything fancy and using a couple poles and some rope, I would like to build a little shelter. I don't want to buy a civil war tent because too many are in use and it just does not seem very piraty to me. What I'm asking for is what type of sail material should be used. I'm thinking about the size of a standard wall tent but the shape is going to be whatever works. I like the idea of a tent made out of some pieces scavenged from some shipwreck. Any advice? All is appreciated. I did a search on the forums but only came up with sutler tents (I retired from Civil War and apparently people still don't like Confederates.) The Quartermaster
  11. Certainly my favorite "pirate" band. They try to capture the rugged feel of old as well as different styles. I like them because they keep an earthy feel and as others said, they are great live. How many pirate bands stick a pistol (fake of course) in a kids face and "ask" for donations. They really are cool cats from personal experience, and they really do work their butts off to make things happen. They keep the pirate spirit (pretty much constantly) alive and they rock in my books because of that. One of their best traits is sounding the same live as they do on CD so there's never a let down. Don't judge them by 3 songs they just happened to put out. If you want one CD to check out then I seriously suggest "2nd Edition Subsection B New Steez the Second, Volume Two", their best work in my opinion. The Quartermaster
