I gotta be honest I am in the process of building my first sail boat and will then teach myself how to sail. No I won't have anyone filming the effort and yes I do know that AFHV could use the tape.

The C.S.S. Shenandoah (last of the Confederate commerce raiders) was a mid 19th century ship and had no "brig" per say they used the forcastle to chain up prisoners. Although I am sure there are others prior to this the first ship I can recall that had a brig was the (crap forgot the German spelling so here is the English) Sea Eagle. A 20th century commerce raider for Imperial Germany. She was the last man of war under sail (at least from a major country) and did have a special area aboard to hold prisoners. Prior to this I can think of no refrence to a brig. I do seem to recall several refrences to men being clamped in irons and held below decks but I don't have any specific refrences as to where below decks off hand(besides the Shenandoah's prefrence for the forecastle of course.).

Agian I am amazed at the lack of a memento from home or some religious article. as a truck driver I spend most of my time in a space much smaller than a captians cabin (less they made em smaller than 70"x102") and I have a monstrous amount of stuff crammed in there for the size. Before I started teaming with my brother I had two prints in the truck (One of Christ with some children and one of dogs playing poker ) a full size callender about 4 paper backs a Bible clothes three knives tools and alot more. It must be a moderen thing but I would have sworn that there would be more aboard even with space a premium (weight being a premium with me) Oh well

Just as a personal prefrence I wear work boots pretty much every day My brother Joey was actually married wearing a suit and his work boots and at funerals and such it's not uncommon to see many of the men in attendance wear their one good suit and work boots. Knowing this I belive that pirates pretty much wore shoes why for the same reason those above wear boots it what they own. Now playing devils advocate if we presume a pirate ship crewed out in a place heavy with fisherman(or for that matter another proffesion where we know boots were prevelent despite there expense) and that these fisherman were not for the most part involved with the handling of the rigging. (argument for this is overcrewing to get hands for boarding as opposed to sailing) then I could become convinced that we have a documented case of a vessel with a high number of boot clad pirates. We are still talking about what 10 maybe 20% of the crew on one vessel and they deffinatly would not be in bucket boots. However please petee continue to look for a way in witch I can justify wearing boots with my kit I hate shoes.

There was to the best of my knowledge no sea service pistol (read Navy specfic)during the GAoP. Most wrecks including the Whydah seem to offer up dragoon style pistols. pherhaps a look in that direction would be in order.

Das I feel the same way a few good teachers and a love of reading have taken me a long way although I still use the fact Georgias public schools are or were the worst in the nation as a crutch now and then . By the by on the subjects of hollywood, history , and England. I got a great laugh out of Prime Minster Blair's rants on the movie U-571. A few may recall a British movie by the name of Breaking the Sound barrier (U.S. in Britian it was just Sound Barrier) in witch a British pilot breaks the sound barrier before any one else because he ....wait for it ........reverses the controls. This movie was in many ways the star wars of it's day with great special effects and a pervasive script it convinced many of us simple minded colonials that Chuck Yeager was merely the first American to break the sound barrier. This resulted in a PR war waged by the USAF and one P.O.ed pilot by the name of Chuck to witch the British producers (insert snide looks and dry british humor here) replied they had labeled there movie as fiction. flash forward a few decades and well ........ Oh and for the Prime Minister's information the first to break enigma were the Poles :) . To be honest I had a real good laugh at this but in all likely hood I'm the only person who put these distant events together with a sick sense of humor lol

Intresting stuff Das. I'd always been told it was a term derived by the British as an insult to us Colonials. As to being offended at being called a yankee I for one never have although I will admit to mock anger at every time I have been refered to as such. By the by a Yankee is a person who was born and lives above the Mason Dixon line a damn Yankee is one who now lives in the south! I do have to agree though Das hatered of people due to their race creed or whatever is just plain dumb. I mean even Yanks can be proud they ain't servents of King George. l

A quick question that may show just how dumb I am here but..... I didn't notice any type of personal items and few navigational tools. I quess what I am looking for would be jewelry or some form of personalised effects. It could be I have trouble imagining someone gone for so long a time without haveing mementos of home. Is it common that these things would not be listed or did they just not have them?

That being the case you lucky dog. I'd say it boils down to the time you have to invest in the project. There will be less time spent mod'ing the CVA but if you want this gun to be an absolute showcase then starting from scratch is the only way I see you being completly satisfied. If this is to be a period style gun that can serve as a "beater" at events and or treking then I'd mod it. If this going to be the highlight of your kit then build from scratch. At least thats what I'd do.

Buy a whole new peice. Either method you're talking about is gonna be nearly as expensive and definatly more time consuming. Keep the old cva for what it is and or just do a few cosmetic changes and use it for a fun pirate kit.

I wish Capt. Coxetter but I'll probaplly be bounce'n around somewhere between the Pacific North West and Miami in the freight shaker. I am glad to see someone from the group is gonna do a RW version of their persona (I presume you would be the Capt. Capt.) For my part I have been doing some prelim stuff on Mr. Smith as a late war harbor pilot recounting his tales of privateering and prison but....... As to a few other items thus far mentioned, Boots and earrings, really can we have this disscusian just once without a shouting match.
