Silkie alluded to this in another thread & I thought it might be worth it's own consideration. What songs & music do we *know* are documentable to the GAoP? A heavy focus on shanties is good, but I'm interested in hearing all period appropriate music. After all sailors weren't completely disconnected from the rest of the culture at the time. I've recently read some of that blue book, Sailors Songs & Sea Shanties (?). There is a lot of information however the arrangement makes it hard to find only the GAoP songs. I have also ordered a copy of Playford's English Dancing Master and have been listening to some of the little tunes from that. I believe it's the…

Yo ho, yo ho, a pirate's life for me. We pillage, we plunder, we rifle, and loot, Drink up, me 'earties, yo ho. We kidnap and ravage and don't give a hoot, Drink up me 'earties, yo ho. Yo ho, yo ho, a pirate's life for me. We extort, we pilfer, we filch, and sack, Drink up, me 'earties, yo ho. Maraud and embezzle, and even high-jack, Drink up, me 'earties, yo ho. Yo ho, yo ho, a pirate's life for me. We kindle and char, inflame and ignite, Drink up, me 'earties, yo ho. We burn up the city, we're really a fright, Drink up, me 'earties, yo ho. We're rascals, scoundrels, villans, and knaves, Drink up, me 'earties, yo ho. We're devils and bla…

Pa Grape, Mr. Lunt, Larry: We are the pirates who don't do anything We just stay at home and lie around And if you ask us to do anything We'll just tell you We don't don anything Pa Grape: Well I've never been to Greenland And I've never been to Denver And I've never buried treasure in St. Louis or St. Paul And I've never been Moscow And I've never been to Tampa And I've never been Boston in the fall Chorus w/ Pa Grape, Mr. Lunt, and Larry Mr. Lunt: And I've never hoist the mainstay And I've never swabbed the poopdeck And I've never veer to starboard 'cause I never sail at all And I've never walked the gangplank And I've never owned a…

Hi, I keep humming this song, and it's driving me crazy. I am sure someone here knows the most appropriate lyrics. I have found different versions, but I would like to know which set of lyrics is the most accurate. Thanks ahead of time!

OK. Just woke up after a night of dreamin' of the sea...and of pirates. Thought I needed some appropriate music, so I checked my CD library...what did I find? The Blessing is the band (William Topley ring any bells?). Prince of the Deep Water is the name of the CD. Popped it into the stereo...turned up the volume. Dogs watching me with terror in their eyes...God, I remember why I loved it so much....There's not a bad track on the album...and there's most definately a pirate mystique... Just a little sample from "Hurricane-Room" See me wistful in some harbour bar I tend the warm glass and the duelling scar I sing my misappropriation song for lovers land-locked far…

In the interest of cataloging songs which speak of sailors, life at sea, taverns, etc., I'm going to keep a running list by year, name and citation. Other specific information about a song, such as the composer, origin, etc., will be listed in posts that follow. Early songs are often recorded in books without tunes or sheet music, and generally bereft of notes on the original author of the lyrics and little or no citation, so finding songs for the period can be frustrating, but we hope this growing list will serve to help further research about music of the Golden Age and before. Songs are listed by the year of their earliest citation. If you should find an earlier …

I think that 'Pirate Music' today is in a similar state as the whole garb issue. For garb, we have the hard core re-enactors, who strive to recreate the clothes and accoutraments that were in actual use during the GAoP. On the other hand we have those who are more interested in representing what the general public thinks pirates dressed like. And lots of shades of difference in between the two outlooks. For pirate music, we have those who try to re-create the actual music of the period, with period instruments and voicing and arrangements. And on the other side of the coin, we have the pirate 'core' style ( akin to heavy metal with words using the seamans and pira…

It's been quiet in this forum as late so just thought I would just throw something together for the fun of it..... Several years ago I had the distinct pleasure of hearing the Corsairs at Silverleaf Ren Faire in Michigan. It seems there has been some changes since then and wonder if anybody could make a comment on their recent reincarnation..... I also would like to recommend to all of you out there that if you have the chance to see "Pint and Dale" grab on with both hands. This Duo is familiar to alot of the East and West Coast Ren Faire people and they do a number of Maritime fests. Singing traditional songs of the sea, along with newer arrangements of some of the…

Anyone ever listened to the "Rogue's Gallery"? some of the songs/shaties are pretty good in my opinion, others not so much but a good listen if you're into nautical songs!

Ok, so hear o'em? Like 'em? Dislike e'm? I heard them for me first time in Big Bear where they had a sound that what 'different yet familiar' 'n it drew me in (plus they got a cute violinist). Then I saw them again at NorthCal Pirate Fest, this time I had t' get one o' their CDs 'n listen'd t' it all th' way home....then it hit me! They sound like a piratey version o' 'Blind Melon' with a hint o' 'Guns&Roses' 'n just a dash o' 'Jethro Tull' (the TJ be come'n from the piper o'course). They did some original stuff as well as their own takes on some traditional.

Whilst I can't take the credit fer pennin' this here fine tune...I felt the need t' be sharin' it...so 'ere it is. Enjoy it mates... Here be a little back story fer ya: "This song tells of a lavish ball at the castle of Cairrigh Muir, that was sabotaged by evil-minded pranksters. It involved three crucial elements: the punch being spiked with a potent aphrodisiac; painfully itchy rose-hip seeds being thrown on the dance-floor, where they were kicked up into the ladies' undergarments; and, at a crucial and premeditated moment, all the lights in the castle being extinguished. What followed next was, by all accounts of the day, 'an orgy of sich greet magnituid, that twenty…

What'll we do with a drunken captain, Earl-aye in the morning? Lock him up with the gouvernor's daughter! Sling him in the long boat till he's sober! Take the Baby and call it Bo'sun! Take 'im and shake 'im, try an' wake 'im! Well, what shall we do?

Ahoy to all ye shanty lovers! I be with a new crew o' pyrates formin' in the Baltimore-Washington locale. We be under full sail, firin' all guns, and flyin' the black flag. Pyrate clothes and reenactin' be fine endeavors, and that be fer certain, but we be primarily interested in singin'! And we be lookin' for like-minded brigands--voices 'n' instruments alike--to join our jolly band o' buccaneers. If ye be in the area, give us a hail.

I'm looking forward to this collection of traditional songs of the sea, performed by contemporary folk and alternative artists: http://www.anti.com/catalog.php?id=67 It's due out on August 22. I'm particularly intrigued to see that it has a contribution from the elusive and eccentric chanteuse Mary Margaret O'Hara ... not to mention Nick Cave, Eliza Carthy and Lou Reed! Cheers, Hester

Some of you may remember me. I've been trying to get as much information together about pirate music as I can so I can do justice to this music score. I have a question about instrumentation. I need to know either what kind of instruments the pirates played their sea shanties on or what kind of instruments just scream PIRATES! right now I'm taking a sea shantie and want to orchestrate it for small ensemble but I need to know what instruments I should assign to everyone. Either information would be helpful. Or if you have any advice I'd love that too! ~Drew

Funny thing I wondered today.... What musical instruments would you see aboard a ship? I can't think of any besides possibly a piccolo or a tin whistle.

I have started crewing on TallShips in my area, but no one is singing shanties. I'm looking for some really great shanties for the halyards, braces, and anchor so any or all ideas are welcomed.

Here there be singers! A bit short-noticed, but for those of the crew who happen to be in Philadelphia on the THIRD MONDAY of each month, a Sea-Chantey and Pub-Songs evening is held at The Mermaid Inn (now is that appropriate, or WHAT?) in the Chestnut Hill (Germantown) section... Webpage Here Your landlady, Joanne, has a good collection of specialty stouts and ales and can talk the brews with you all nite, if you'd prefer, or you can join in with Cap'n Fudd (Charlie Miller), Bosu'n Dan (Mendini) and the crew and make the nite cacaphonous with your favourite Chantey (New ones are MORE than welcome!) or just sit and drink... The next one is tomorrow nite, so if you'v…

I play a bit of acoustic guitar and was planning on adding an instrument like that to my "persona". Is there a resource for research into historical instruments ... particularly those of coastal New England in the mid-18thC ? What would be allowed on board a typical merchant/privateer rig of the time? Space being at a minimum, I would assume a double bass is out of the question! Wartooth
