I'm headed to the Keys on the 6th of May and was wondering if there are any "must see" places? Thanks in advance.

I'm about to take the family for our annual road-trip. This time the bulk of the trip will be the Gulf Coast of Florida, with Key West as our final destination. To keep costs down we generally pitch a tent at whatever national parks, camp grounds, or KOAs we can find, but online research is indicating that even this option can get pricey in the Key West vicinity (~$75/night for four people.) Any of you Key West gurus know any local secrets you can share? If that's what I've got to pay, then so be it, but if there's anything less pricey I'd love to hear about it! (looking MUCH forward to visiting the new Pirate Soul museum!!!)

So my wife and I are going to Fort Myers tomorrow, and we're going to leave the baby with his grandparents and sneak off to Key West for a few days. I've only been once, and that was for PiP, and while I remember a bit of the places I went, I can't remember where I ate. Part of that was following a bunch of people to a restaurant and never learning its name, and part of that might be rum-related amnesia. In any case, I want to know some fun places to go. And I thought, Why not ask the fine folks who have invaded Key West every year for the last decade or so?

Greetins! My wife and I will be headin to the Caribbean next year and we're in a bit of a fix. WE want to go someplace with lots of pirate history to it, museums, treks, landmarks.....pubs..... However we will have our 8 year old daughter with us as well as another family. Any idea where the best child-friendly spots are but where the adults have equal time? I don't want to end up in a Caribbean "theme park" for 2 weeks. Jamaica seems the most likely, but I've read some posts about Nassau too.

I took the family to Cape Charles for a long weekend of camping. One of the things I came away with was an interest in Kiptopeke as a possible venue for a pirate event. The place is just about as close as we could get to a place where Teach and Hornigold careened, without breaking any Federal laws. http://www.piratebrethren.com/capecharles/...apecharles.html (click on the purty pic to go to the next page) http://www.dcr.state.va.us/parks/kiptopek.htm I sent this to the folks on the Pirate Brethren mail list, and figured I'd echo it here.

My publishers will send me anywhere to hawk my new book, (Gus Openshaw's Whale-Killing Journal). As it's more maritimey than piratey (although one of the main characters is a pirate) in the market for decent maritime festivals, and would be much obliged if anyone tells me of one. Charleston, SC, is the only one on the docket so far.

Ahoy, my bullies! My apologies, I was gone on a two-day cruise on the Lady Washington, which (if you don't already know) played the Interceptor in POTC 1. If ye be lookin' fer a true piratical experience, look into bookin' a passage or "battle sail". Out of all the tall ship's I've seen, she is by far the most beautiful. The cruise was a lot of fun. When my friend and I mentioned that we were Sea Scouts, the steward immediately press-ganged us into the crew. We set sail from Antioch, in the delta, and cruised west through San Pablo Bay to Tiberon Penninsula, where we anchored for the night. I was lucky enough to get put on the midnight watch, which meant I had to get up …

Just got some scuttlebutt whilst workin' on my other boat in Sausalito, that the Lady Washington, during transit at night from Sacramento, lost both topmasts at the Benicia Bridge. I have no idea at this point why they didn't have the bridge raised,( I'm waay shorter, and I have them raise it) but anyway, the worst happened for it..I'll post if I hear more, but I'm kinda busy pulling a powerplant..

Ahoy mates! I am looking for information on latchet shoes of the late 1600's to early 1700's, the kind that tied with a lace and had a small cut-out at the sides. Basically, I need a good photo or drawing of the shoe which would show me enough construction details that I could craft a pair of them meself. I am looking for 100% historically accurate shoes, not modern conversions. Can anyone help me out? Thanks so much in advance!

I'll be taking sailing lessons sometime when the lake warms up, and am looking at buying my training craft. I've found alot of good input about the Snark and Super Snark, and have found what I think to be a great deal on a used one.($300-obo) It's the 11ft. Super Snark, and in like new condition, original mainsail and no leaks, scratches, etc. Anyone out there have one or any experience with them? any feedback would be greatly appreciated...Thanx! Capt. Bo

If I've already addressed this topic on this board, I apologize -- however, it's been on the back of my mind to post a topic for discussion about this for SO LONG that I honestly can't remember at this point if I actually POSTED it at some point or not. (So I suppose it goes without saying that, even if I did post it, I don't remember what anyone said about it. *grins*) I am applying for -- considering applying for, I guess I should say, though it's definitely SERIOUSLY considering -- a study program that involves, at the end of the term, four and a half weeks at sea on a brignatine (plenty of port stops, yes; but still, four weeks). Here's the thing (one thing, anyway)…

I am going to boston the weekend of the 15th and 16th of October. Is there a ship museum there or close by? Also I was told there is a old sailing ship in harbor that you can take a tour on. I only have half a day friday, and each night after 5pm on sat. and sun. Does anyone know, and what else might I be missing? Thanks for any help, Delmar

Aye mates, for most lubbers, today was Tuesday, but for those of us fortunate enough and whacko enough to live it New Orleans, it was Mardi Gras! The Pyrate Queen and I made our usual voyage to Bourbon Street. We both commented that PIRATES seemed to be the most popular costuming theme this year. Aaarrgh, may our crew increase! :) Capt. William

Just makin' a call to all out there about a bit o' trouble I be in. I be new 'round this port, an' I suppose not everyone will know who I am, but I thought it ought to be mentioned what the goings on are here. I'll find myself without without a place to drop anchor for some time. The internet will be unreliable for me, so it's without an idea of when I'll be back that I find myself. If it weren't for the trouble, I'd probably visit more often and talk much more. I be lookin' forward to gettin' to know you all better, whenever that may be.

I just returned from a week (my second trip) to Malta. I was there for a week two years ago. The trip was a deeply emotional one, and I left part of my soul there. I cannot recommend highly enough spending time there, but be warned: it is not cheap. There is so much to say, I do not know where to begin. I wanted to start this new thread to post some of my anecdotes, stories, experiences, pirate/corsair information, etc. The highlights of this recent trip were visits to the oldest man-made standing structures on the planet (1,000 years older than the pyramids!), a cruise on the Mediterranean aboard a 100-foot wooden gullet, a tour through the Inquisitor's Palace..…

So I have this opportunity to go to Manila and do some history snooping through a most bizarre set of circumstances that came about this week. For those of you who don't want to read the intrigue and adventure (so to speak) of how this came about, I am looking for info on what might be interesting in the GAoP sense in Manila. For those of you who like a yarn, settle back in your easy chair. I read this newspaper called Investor's Business Daily that has a page called "Leader's and Success" every day. On Monday last, they had an article about a spy in the WWII named Claire Phillips. Manila was a location where we got our behinds handed to us; it's right near the site of …

you've all heard the stories, and i'm sure you've noticed the check box next to the word "Amputations" on your employment forms. But how many of us (you) have had serious injuries whilst upon the waters? it get's talked up alot in the galley/coffee room/shipping crate but the worst I've ever seen(as it happened) or experienced is perhaps being belted with a stray spar here and there. So tell us your tales of woe, anything greater than a broken finger will do.

Hi, all: A few years ago, a friend's sister, who had a 42-foot sailboat, took a year off with her husband and young son, planning to sail from the Great Lakes all the way down to the Caribbean and back. Well, they made it as far as Florida, and other sailors that they met along the way warned them strongly not to venture any further (at least not without some serious arsenal aboard and a large convoy to accompany them). They were told that modern-day pirates (drug runners mostly) cruised the waters between Florida and the Caribbean islands, and that if they came across a lone, unprotected vessel, they would hijack it, kill the people and throw their bodies overboard, a…
