Okay...this is my first attempt on making this type of period stays. I used the corset/stay generator and then modified the length/cut for late 17th century.

The stays are made out of wool, lined with linen and finished with twill.

I self-hemmed using the same wool. Making your own bias tape is not hard and it looks so much better!

The corset is fully boned (full cane) with a wooden busk in the middle.

As for the eyelets (working on this)...they will all be covered with embroidery thread to match.

Yes...(hmmm) the use of grommets are NOT correct, of course...but they really do the job when going through several thick layers of wool.

Also, they seem to hold up much better when lacing, I've had some 'hiccups' when just covering awl holes. They 'blow through' after time.

Sorry no shot of me in them (yet). Hubby wasn't home when I took the shot.

Ack NO they don't... grommets break the threads in the fabric,,, making it much weaker at that stress point... proper eyelets should NOT break the threads at all... thus a much better and stronger eyelet... and a WHOLE lot easier to make then punching holes, setting grommets and then embroidering over them... remind me to teach you how next event...

Tried something new with the last eyelets I did, I used little brass rings and stitched them into the blanket stitch. They sew up rather neatly, you can put them on the inside or the outside and the results are a nearly perfect eyelet every time. I think it may be the best of both worlds. So far so good. I'll let you know.

eye ..errrr, aye, we know. The ones on my stays are sewn without reinforcement and they are stretching out of shape. Thought the brass rings would give the needed reinforcement but not cut the threads ...hmmm ...wonder how well plastic rings would work ...if they make them that small.

Yes, of course Captain and we did state that grommets are NOT PC.

With all do respect, this was my first run of a hand-drafted period stays.

I do plan to make another set...something a bit more..well, better.

However, these will be used for my indentured servant/diver persona. I will be doing a lot of 'physical' work in these; therefore,...I want to make sure I don't have a 'wardrobe malfunction’ while I’m dashing about.

This pair of stays will be covered and will not be seen from the back.
