Capt. Sterling Posted May 22, 2007 Posted May 22, 2007 Keep it organized enough to stop traffic from tripping over tent stakes and ropes... certainly do not need streets a la the British military, although I would expect the Redcoat camp to be more so, just keep it safe for the spectators... and leave me a space FAR away from the rest of my snoring crew!! willie wobble Posted May 23, 2007 Posted May 23, 2007 i'm having a hard time joining together two 2/4s for my dinning fly for a length of 12 foot for the center beam ,the pine i'm using keeps spliting. i have split two 8ft 2/4s down about two and 1/2 foot each to overlap and put 3 carrage bolts through them to join together . is there a better way to join together 2/4s for a tent or dinning fly? thanks willie
theM.A.dDogge Posted May 23, 2007 Posted May 23, 2007 i have seen a metal sleeve...that would hold the two ends together...with holes to bolt em tight the the wood...i think panther primatives even may have one????
michaelsbagley Posted May 23, 2007 Posted May 23, 2007 Yeah, the method M.A.d'Dogge receomended is the one I have seen and heard the best results with. Using a harder wood is another solution, but probably much more expensive and possibly much more difficult to source as well.
Capt. Sterling Posted May 23, 2007 Posted May 23, 2007 Aye Panther does carry them... called Steel Sleeves...my last catalog listed them for under 30 a piece.... and they have three sizes... www.pantherprimitives.com "I being shot through the left cheek, the bullet striking away great part of my upper jaw, and several teeth which dropt down the deck where I fell... Jack Roberts Posted June 14, 2007 Posted June 14, 2007 So I drew these up a few weeks ago and tonight I cleaned them up. This is my idea of a good size wedge tent for my wife and I. Tell me what you think.
Rats Posted June 14, 2007 Posted June 14, 2007 SNORING CREWE!!! I resemble that remark!!! Rats No rest for the wicked! Wait a minute... that's me?!
Patrick Hand Posted June 14, 2007 Posted June 14, 2007 Tell me what you think. At 8' x 10', your going to need a 10' ridge pole.... if you have a truck it should be no problem... otherwise you might want to consider 8 x 8 .... I prefer ties to loops, but that is a personal preference... I figure it allows me to modify what I'm tieing the tent to if I have to.... I also add loops at both ends of the tent where the ridgepole will go, so I can tighten the tent.... Having both the front and back open isn't really period... but it is soooo dang handy.... (and it lets you set-up the tent as a large lean-to if you want.....) Something you may want to consider, is making the flaps overlap a bit, and use two rows of ties..... it makes the tent more weather proof, and there are no gaps through the flaps for anyone to peek through...... I still have it in storrage, but my wedge tent is 8 x 8 x 5 1/2 It was large enough for two people (and a suit of armour...and a rope bed...I used it when I was in the SCA.).... but I painted a Celtic red boar on the side of it.... and that's just not quite right for Pyrate events..... Other than the size, and a few things mentioned above, it is close to what you are planning on making..... OH YAH.... one other thing..... when I set it up, I used a set of sheir poles front and back to hold up the ridge pole ( so I could adjust for uneven ground)..... then (this is the cool part....) I would run a line from the back tent steak, up to the ridgepole at the other end, and back to the other sides back tent steak.... them do the same for the front.... this way, all my guy lines were inside the tent... not outside where someone could trip on them......
Jack Roberts Posted June 14, 2007 Posted June 14, 2007 Thanks Pat! Couple of questions to help clear up my understanding. The ridge pole supports, some like a Y shape at the top? And the rope run along the diagonals in the front and back? ( along where it says 7.2') Also should I run a couple of small loops or ties along the smae path to hole the rope in? I'll probably find a way to sleeve the ridge pole, and I'm renting a car so I'll have some more room than my civic! I'm not sure if its clear or not but I'm planning on sewing a tent long pocket along the entire ridge, probably leaving room in the middle to check on the sleeve. Thanks Pat!
Patrick Hand Posted June 14, 2007 Posted June 14, 2007 For PiP, you will probably be using two poles, and a rope guy line.... But this may be handy for other events where you can bring all the poles needed.... When you lash the shier poles, leave some extra rope at the ends.... One person can set up a tent this way... First you lash one of the shier poles to the ridge pole, and then put the tent on it.... Temporarily stake out the back of the tent.... Lift the ridge pole, and lash the front shier poles to it.... Pound in and adjust all tent steaks... By moving the ends of the shier poles, you can raise or lower the ridge pole to adjust for uneven ground..... also there isn't a pole right in the middle of the opening...... Tie the lines from the steaks over the ridgepole and back to the other steaks..... When set-up this way, the tent is very stable, and there are no ropes for anyone to trip over......
Jack Roberts Posted June 14, 2007 Posted June 14, 2007 Marvelous!! I love pictures! Thanks so much for that tidbit of info. I would have never thought of that. Thanks again Pat.
Capt. Sterling Posted June 14, 2007 Posted June 14, 2007 Hey Pat, now, not trying to argue historical correctness, just curious where you came up with this... very clever.... I like it. Of course with tent ropes like that there is no obstacle course from rum drunk pirates! Patrick Hand Posted June 14, 2007 Posted June 14, 2007 not trying to argue historical correctness I'm not claiming that it is historicaly accurate..... just that it works very well....
Capt. Sterling Posted June 14, 2007 Posted June 14, 2007 not trying to argue historical correctness I'm not claiming that it is historicaly accurate.... Dang!! Patrick Hand Posted June 14, 2007 Posted June 14, 2007 Interestingly enough...... If I could figure that out, what's to say someone else use to lashing and knots couldn't.... But it's safer saying "I'm not claiming it's authentic" ....
Capt. Sterling Posted June 14, 2007 Posted June 14, 2007 Got that right!! William Brand Posted June 26, 2007 Posted June 26, 2007 I'm glad to see so many fellow pirates getting into the spirit of the thing. I expect that the atmosphere of the camps will be such that all involved will take home such pictures and stories as to make the Pub jealous. I hope the weather is fair and the attendence large. Capt. Sterling Posted June 26, 2007 Posted June 26, 2007 Hey we're tornado proof, what's a little wet weather?? Jack Roberts Posted June 27, 2007 Posted June 27, 2007 SO a couple of things I've learned so far with a question or two. When you buy 21 yards of canvas, you can't wash it all at once unless you have access to some huge industrial washer and dyer. Otherwise you have cut in down smaller and wash those pieces separately. Make sure before you wash that you run a zigzag stitch along the cut edge to prevent major fraying. So Patrick, with the pole rig you've shown us, how must one cut the trap in order to allow the poles to stick out the top? Do I just wrap the door flaps around and tie off? Is that ok if it rains? (Does that even make sense?)
Jack Roberts Posted June 27, 2007 Posted June 27, 2007 EEGAADDSS!! My canvas shrunk, a Whole LOT! I know it would butt, I didn't think it would have been that much. Well I now have to recalculate my dimensions. I think it will only be about 5' high now instead of 6'. I cut a 15' piece and I lost 2 feet after washing and drying. Oh well, I just wanted let everyone know they can plan on it.

Oh well, I just wanted let everyone know they can plan on it. That's about right.... I read somewhere recently that 17% shrinkage is about what should be expected onn mst fabrics... Some will shrink more, some less... but the 17% is kind of an average.... I'm sorry you tent shrank so much. I hope the diminsished dimensions don't cramp your style too much.
Jack Roberts Posted June 27, 2007 Posted June 27, 2007 Naww, I'll make do. If I could have wahed Before I cut the fabric, this could have been avoided. But no worries. I guess the shrinkage effect it more prominent when you that much yardage.
Patrick Hand Posted June 28, 2007 Posted June 28, 2007 how must one cut the trap in order to allow the poles to stick out the top? Do I just wrap the door flaps around and tie off? Is that ok if it rains? Basicaly that's it.... you leave on opening that the ridge pole goes through, and sew on ties that can close the opening around the ridge pole....And keep the tent tight on the ridge pole......
