Here's something else I found interesting: Hippocrates’ss theory on the wandering womb had a great impact on feelings about the female body and sexuality. Hippocrates, as well as generations of medical thinkers after him, viewed the womb as an inde- pendent creature. Because female bodies were thought to crave warmth and moisture, frequent sexual activity was needed to stabilize the uterus. It was thought that unnatural behavior, such as celibacy or an excess of “male activities,” would drive the uterus to distraction and cause it to wander freely throughout the body. There were various consequences to these travels depending on how far the uterus wandered and where it chose to attach itself, but when the roving organ ultimately came to rest next to the brain, it caused hysteria. Hysterikos: If women are troubled in mind or body, the Kahun papyrus advises its readers, look to the wandering womb. In the fourth century BCE, Hippocratic physicians wrote that women who were ill might be plagued by a wanderlustful womb, which had loosened itself from its mysterious moorings to cause trouble in the parts of the body where it had set up shop. If the womb strayed into the head, it would cause headaches; if it sat in a woman's chest, it could cause near-suffocation. A misplaced womb could steal breath. Bind up a throat. Make everything difficult. Give it a child and it will be happy. Sometimes treatment was performed via the orifices. Affected women would be given something foul-smelling to breathe, so that the womb would be repulsed, would hightail it back down where it belonged. Another treatment was to expose the vulva to something pleasant-smelling, to lure the womb down to its rightful place, the way a woman incites a lover with sweet perfumes. Intercourse was proposed as a cure. After all, the womb longed to be of use. great excuse for being oversexed "My doctor prescribed it"

I think I understand the point Dutch was trying to make - The beach's wooded area has well worked paths, that in and of themselves, direct pedestrian traffic. The Bonies camp, as well as some of the others set up beach side, for all intents and purposes, had our back to the path. By circling ourselves around a central fire, and closing the circle towards the beach it kind of kept people out. Of course it did make it easier to police our own camp areas and keep our things protected, but it didn't invite the public in to learn either. If we line up on either sides of the path we would better direct traffic through the areas If we close and secure our tents when we're away for battles etc and set up semi open and outside for demonstrations during the day it might be more inviting than having a closed circle where people have to either walk on the beach or maneuver their way through ropes and stakes to get to where we are. Am I getting ya Dutchie?? - I have to admit I had a hard time maneuvering in and out of my own crews camp at night so i think i know what your trying to get at.

Quoting Dutch: locals know we are there but have probably seen this before and write it off as another local ammusement. so who is left? tourists on the ships and those staying near by. face it- the fort is out of the way. so how to draw the beach crowd and the cruise ship crowd. I have not been to the docks, but can we do a street show there to drum up business? (i think someone mentioned something similar earlier) I am going to talk to the crew about looking into advertising on the cruise ships for that week. As far as doing something visible to the cruise ships though, we probably get the best visibility of the cruise ship people on Duval and at the Marina, they usually make a bee-line for those places when the ship docks. The cruise ships dock at the Westin and the dock is private and secure, so I doubt we can catch them coming off. Like Harry mentioned with the "invasion at the Schooner Warf" we did a lot of events out in town this year to make people aware there was something going on. Things like the Anne Bonney and Mary Read dragging through town has alwaysbrought people in, and I think the idea of using Mallory Square and doing something (the hanging - if we can pull it off) there would bring attention to the event as well. We've tried to increase our Advertising programs each year........We have great ideas for next year already... from putting discount travel packages together, to more television and radio appearances, to more events where we can walk the streets and hand out fliers. This past year we made a lot of appearances, just to promote PIP! We did a whole bunch of advertising leading up to the event this year, quite a few festivals of all kinds, pirate and non-pirate where thanks to the Callahans, we had great print materials to hand out. We did a couple of TV appearances and did some radio as well... still we have plans to go even further with the Advertising next year. We really want to get people to plan to come to Key West because its PIP, so any ideas, anything that will help us get the word out is greatly appreciated. We want the world to see what everyone is doing here. We really do feel like we have a very special group of fantastic re-enactors who come to this event. Its the real deal and we want everyone to experience it, so thanks for everything ALL of you do.

Happy Natal Dday to My Beloved William Red Wake

HAPPY BIRTHDAY WILLIAM!! many many blessings -
Harry, That could be a great way to get people interested in the battles-- getting them involved is always a great idea --I was going to add that to Missions list as a way to keep an audiences attention.

re-socialization of an endangered society - love it ROFLMAO!

OHHHHH GOD she's SOOOOO Cute!! Thanks for sharing that!

I really have to agree with Dutch, the audience dictates the interest. I really think making people more aware of the living history in the program would best serve everyone here. If we scheduled a reasonable time for people to experience all of it on their own, and manned our stations accordingly the audience could design their own tour. Giving them a detailed map would give them time to wander to their area's of interest. If they knew based on the program that from 2:00 until 3:00 there are demonstrations going on in the Buccaneers camp. from 3:00 - 4:00 lectures in the careening camp on, navigation, medicine, and the merchant's trade, and from 4:00 - 5:00 lectures in the Hide and Cat and Fiddle on food, and drink as well as social life and games of the day etc etc. we could set up character interaction that involved the audience. My mother used to work at the old governors mansion in New Bern NC where I grew up. They did character based historic tours without a guide much like this. They went about the work of their daily roles, in the kitchen etc. The lectures as people toured were often different based on what time of day you encountered them. A lot of the information was similar but there was no scheduled tour you bought your ticket and the tour was self guided, and you could ask questions. It allowed you to linger in an area you were interested in as long as you liked. I really think people like that option. It shouldn't interfere with all the other events...we can still do the Olympics and other things during these times, not everyone has to be in their camp demonstrating from 2:00 until 5:00 as we have set times for different demonstrations. If you guys really want to go the tour guide route..I'm certain we can pull it off, I'm just trying to consider that we will have to schedule the lectures taking into account the route we walk, the time it takes to get that crowd - no telling the size- from one place to another, and take into account not only the length of the lecture but time for questions pictures, applause, money thrown, hand shaking, autograph signing, movie deals LOL just dreaming Anyway just my last thought on the subject -I am here to help either way...I was able to catch one of Dutch's navigation lectures and really enjoyed it, I hope to have more time to see more lectures next year, for myself, knowing when its a good time to come by is half the battle.

Kind of a mix of the two ideas.... we make a "treasure map" of the Fort out to the camps.... that could be passed out announcing the "Camp Walk"... after the Battle... (This also allows for Key West Time... because the "Camp Walk isn't at X:30... but a little after the battle... so we all know when it is...) The impromptu demos we do are nice, but having an organized "Camp Walk" would let us know when to really "show-off" The only problem I can see with this is if each Camp puts on a two hour demo..... we'll lose visitors with a short attention span, and they wont see the rest of us showing off.... I think right now, most of the visitors walking through camp don't want to disturb us and ask questions.... so we need something to let them know that talking with us if not only OK, but encouraged...... ooo ooo Patrick what a great idea... the maps are perfect...we could put info in the legend regarding where demonstrations take place between what hours people are demonstrating. Just an over view say Demonstrations take place in the careening camp between ___and ____hours, in the Buccaneer camp between ____and ____hour, this will allow us to see one another as well. People will know where to wander and when to wander - People could then take their time and if they miss a demonstration or one is too long they can feel free to move on and come back later. Then everyone knows between the hour of ____and ____ to give their demonstrations, people who want more or missed something will more likely come back the following day to see the rest. This eliminates the need for guides as well.

Harry, We could always just do a SUN salute and leave the battles where they are. I think the sound of cannons gets them to the fort though so the earlier we fire something the better. Ya think?
-
LOL... all that prime grade A being displayed must have sparked it. LOL
-
I agree with Patrick and Sterling... I think the Battle (CANNONS!) draw people from all over town to the fort. I agree that its a good idea to move the battles to earlier in the morning, and schedule the tour for a bit after the battle so people have time to get set up for their living history, it would be perfect. As well, I think one tour a day is fine. The people that miss the tour, well, it will give them a reason to come back the following day. If we put a map of the tour of the camps in the program they are also free to take the tour - san guide at their leisure... if some of the demonstrators are still present and willing to demonstrate they get a partial tour. With the pirate olympics and the trial, and the pub, and other entertainment (the conquistadores etc..) as well as all the battles.... to put on 3 or 4 tours could cause a scheduling nightmare. I personally believe Key West time is often a result of our reach exceeding our grasp...still you have to love the attitude oh well no biggie - keep reaching!! and well honestly we just want to enjoy it ALL. Anyway.... I fear too tight a schedule will squeeze the fun out of it for everyone. I think starting with one scheduled tour at _______ time -( about one hour after the battle) would be good. I think the tour is a GREAT idea still I think 1 is a good start. With all the other great plans for next year I would hate to see everyone bite off so much we're all spread even thinner than we are already. I think every crew had at least someone have a mini breakdown from being spread too thin.

I'd be willing to tour guide... I'm sure Chrispy would love it as well... we could pass the groups off from one tour guide to another to limit the time required to guide a tour, this way more people interested in guiding a tour could get in on it.
-
Aye, It would be a pleasure to meet you! and you should at least get to see the fruit of your labor, as most of us are well versed in your site. I personally would like to thank you very much for the time and research you have put in and made available to us! Dunka shurn! Ser vous! Chrispy

I'm with you Jim. Violence has never solved the worlds problems and never will.

that would make him Nigel's second cousin once removed and me long lost brother --- Not Nigel "One Ball" Riley

Live down there a while and you would have been FREEZING that whole weekend. You really develop a tolerance for the climate. I can always tell the tourists in winter, we're in slacks and sweaters some even in coats and they are in shorts and sandals. When I lived here as a kid well young adult...i can testify to wearing leather pants to a rock concert in the middle of summer in Florida and not thinking twice about it. You really do get used to the heat.
