  1. Regarding the wool ...Thanks for the advice on that, so then the black wool Mary Diamond was wearing must have covered whatever was underneath. I had thought about using a great fabric like that silk for the stays, but then I thought about the difficulty of matching the skirt with something cheaper!! I would hate the colors and textures not to work together...oo oo I just had a thought. I could probably get enough extra for a ruffle on a sleeve or the skirt to bring the fabric in elsewhere without having to make a whole other piece out of it. That would definitely keep the cost down. I just thought about Mary's gown again and how she had that silk line around the base of her mourning skirt. I could do something similar with the silk from the stays, or even use it as a sleeve lining on the mantua so the color shows elsewhere. Ok now I'm thinking LOL. I kind of worry about ordering fabrics online. I worry the weight and the texture isn't going to be what I expected. Still those prices are good and that rust taffeta is really gorgeous. it just might be worth the risk. Kate would love to continue to see the photos of your progress.
  2. Seeing as Dogge shared his and i promised...I said I'd share the crews, but I'll start with myself to be fair: Rusty, the shanty thats me both lusty and busty I be to shag tis quite grand a small fee when on land but she'll plunder yer treasure at sea. (<--- the crew says this line )
  3. Just did a bit more shopping around and it looks like thats really a great price after all. WOW had no idea how expensive silk could be. Think I'll make my first set out of wool or linen or a combination of the 2. I REALLY love that silk though it is gorgeous. Please post any other fabric sites I appreciate saving money anywhere I can these days, it means getting to go to more events. Nell
  4. OH wow thats GORGEOUS!! ....argh what a tease I'd love to make a whole GOWN out of that... 16 bucks a yard, though...I guess thats not bad for silk, stays would be about all I could afford out of that these days. It's GORGEOUS though. Thanks for the link I'll look around! Nell
  5. ohhh It almost looks RUST -- just my color!! thats close to what I'm looking for color wise. nice!
  6. LOL... Hope you slept well..Happy New Year Mad Dogge and thanks for stepping up and offering to share your method with us. I look forward to the day we're all learning from the same "book" The crew should do what we have to to get our fight masters together for a weekend and get all of you on the same page. It really would be great to know I'm learning the same thing your crew is. Anyway... HAPPY NEW YEAR!!
  7. I found this lady's Etsy shop this morning when I was researching fabrics (I know its early 5:00am habit) womens clothing I wanted to put it here because I learned a lot reading her description. She shares a lot of details and her research describing the garment. Now that I know I want to go PC the fabric store was starting to intimidate me so I wanted to do some homework before shopping. I know what's on her sight is a later period. I've been trying to get fabric ideas so I can start looking for PC fabrics on sale at Joanne's. Looking at a reed corset up close. I'm starting to think maybe I should go 1/2 boned, wow those channels are tiny. Questions: Will a full boned really last longer? My thought process when it comes to doing the extra work was that I figure the garment will offer itself support against the support its required to give me if its fully boned, am I right? Or on half boned if I use heavy upholstery type fabrics that will stand up against the strain in a half boned with success? I've made a few from store bought costume patterns before. The one that still fits me the best I used a thin denim, plastic boning, and metal grommets, its on its 3rd year with a LOT of wear (I wore it daily at a pirate theater job for almost a year) but its finally starting to fall apart. Not to mention its not PC. I am not sure what kind of fabric weight to get. If I go too heavy I imagine the smaller channels will be hard to sew, to light and it won't last. I really want to take my time on this first PC one and do it right. Also when thinking about outer wear, I get really nervous about patterns and textures and modern weaves. Can we discuss fabrics and weights and sheen, and patterns etc etc. How do I know it looks PC, I understand the natural fiber issue but what about weave. Half the time I don't even know what I'm looking at let alone if its PC. How do I tell and what do I look for? Thanks ladies for all your help... oh and Gentleman!! Forgive me... of course I can't leave out Captain Sterling.
  8. HAPPY NEW YEAR!! "May you always have walls for the winds, a roof for the rain, tea beside the fire, laughter to cheer you, those you love near you, and all your heart might desire." My pirate family!!! I love you all dearly, and pray the best for all of you in the coming year. My biggest wish for 09 is a hope that we can share more laughter in the coming year.
  9. "and that ain't what it takes to love me..." just wanted to sing along!! and it has to stay ASPS I've had too much rum and don't care to make an attempt right now! HAPPY NEW YEAR!!
  10. Oh I KNOW this is exactly how we fight...RULE #1 "WE NEVER HIT EACH OTHER" RULE #2 "MAKE IT LOOK LIKE YA DID" I mean I've done points with my eyes closed and had them done on me with closed eyes - still there's nothing wrong with some physical conditioning as part of the fighters training. It sure doesn't hurt. That's all I'm saying. I'm not saying its unsafe without it. No not at all! So i hope you don't think I'm questioning your or Dead-eyes methods. Honestly we learn the same way you do, points first. Everyone learns differently is all, and some people have better centers of balance than others. The only point I was trying to make was that physical conditioning and balance is important to anything that requires timing, endurance and movement. I learned points first as did everyone in the crew with no injuries to date.
  11. I think thats why we all start with wood. Until the fight master determines a fighters condition is up to par, they shouldn't be using steel. And Dogge I agree with the fact that a fight can look like a great fight without ever moving your feet. Thats how Dead-eye teaches as well, strike zones first. Still... you have to move them eventually and I feel like from what I see especially with older fighters, center and balance are so important. I think thats what delays their development as fighters is the lack of movement and balance. All movement gets more difficult as you age and when you add in a need for balance - really important when your carrying a weapon (considering the weight of it throws you off balance) If you don't really exercise all areas of movement required for the task. Anyway, I think they are all equally important, no matter what order you teach them in, as long as you teach them both. My main reason for starting with movement be it feet or hands before weapons are even introduced was to get people to understand this isn't really fighting, its a "movement" first and foremost,
  12. nope he only changed one apparently mone is a word, who knew? <---mone's while eat an ice cream cone and drinking a coke
  13. Ohh lucky you Sterling... give them hugs for me... I'm off to bed to cuddle with the honey. Night ALL!
  14. my hubby makes a champagne cocktail he calls a Chrispy of course he named it after himself, he's so humble, but to be honest it actually suits the drink its 60% Moet and 40% RedBull. It's actually a great New Years drink, you'll stay up till the ball drops. what I'm drinking now, a tall glass of cold milk right before bed, old habits die hard.
