I'm not much for flooding my mailbox with junk, but I received a sample copy of Smoke and Fire News. Of course I would happen to get the one copy i've ever seen with the Kalmar Nykel as the Centerfold. Over all it seems to have some informative articles and lots of listings. Does anyone have a subscription and is it worth looking into as a regular read?

eh, i've never been accused of being too clean. even me mum says so. I went to a kids event last week (cute little buggers, willoughby had a project at a inner city head start program). anyhow, i decided to wear some finer clothes and i got a doubletake from me own grace. she was trying to figure out who the new guy was from a distance!!!!

oh no worries of me drowning. there is so much pine tar and oil in those rags, i'm waterproof. Now open flames scare the begezus out of me. Note* just for clarification, these wonderful garments are seasoned from actually working aboard ships and are treated as clothes of the period would have been. it's not like i rolled in a pig sty and voila dirty. My jacket is being seasoned this weekend by treating the longboat and parts of Luna to a dose of waterproofing.

HAPPY PIRTHDAY

oh a large pot to boil the crabs and fleas in. makes em more tender. for the love of man. why on earth would anyone wish to expose any more of your skin to the sun than neccessary. why you will burn for certain, then the ladies will think you must spend your days working the fields or on the water as a commoner rather than lounging in a garden under a tree or having a trade. fresh air upon your skin shall certainly lead to a plague in the chest, especially in the colder or drafty months. and for bathing, my goodness!! never!! why if the air upon your body will not cause a plague than the water will for certain. why just last february, cousin Silas fell overboard, adding insult landed where the Garland had been laid for some time and dumped their pots. Oh the smell!! We pulled him out and finished our days work unloading hogsheads. Well after the three mile walk home in the rains he set to a fever and chills that night. We called for the cyrgen who bled him, but to no good results. He was overcome by fits and fevers and coughs and died in pain three days later. No sir, you will not catch me bathing. We should have let poor Silas drown, would have been better than suffering like that. As to the dirty clothes.. well i air them as i can and smoke them regularly to fumigate the bedbugs. unfortunately, only having two sets of clothes my options are limited. As well, the lyes and stone washings are harder on the cloth than holystoning the decks of the ship. How many of us can say they have actually worn a stone out on deck! Unfortunatley, this chesapeak humidity keeps all wet in the planting and growing months and our garments are prone to mold. so is best to simply try to keep them as dry as one can.

well i'm going to resurect this one.... from the Executive Journals of the Colony of Virginia. April 27th 1710.... ..."on the petition of William Waters setting forth he and his partner had been at great charge and expense fitting out boats and other tackle for carrying on a whale fishery upon the coast of this Her Majestys colony and in the the bay of chesapeak. Leave is accordingly granted unto the sd William Waters and his partners to sett up and carry on the whale fishing aforesaid within the limits abovementioned they paying the Governor of this her Majestys Colony for the time being a small aknowledgement for her Majestys Right to the said fishing." I had no idea whaling occured at a marketable level anywhere near the bay.

AHAH!!!!! THATS IT REPELLANT!!! A PREEMPTIVE STRIKE BEFORE THEY STING YOU!!!! Even better justification than before. thanks gunner. kate and michael, i appolgize for leading your well meaning thread astray. we will now return to the topic of cleaning garments, which I obviously know little about.

of course sometimes you may want to urinate on yourself.... the enzymes and amonia neutralize jellyfish stings.....

well darned, less people to loaf on the beach with. certainly will miss you both, but we can't make it to every event. Misson, congrats on the Dupont deal!!! the jacket- simple olive canvas made to R.H. paterns. It took me two days to make!!! I love the new sewing machine. The jacket is going to be a beater so I cheated a bit making it, but beginning to dutchify it tomorrow. This was my first attemp at anything with sleeves- not bad. When I finish this one, I'm going to start on a new one by hand. Already have my buttons and lining.

she seems to be flat bottomed, how is her stability? she seems to sit a tad low with two people aboard, how much freeboard is left and did the designer mention how much weight can she safely carry?

i'm most interested in the boat and the quality of work of the guild since "they will find the genuine article, dismantle it, and see how it works. Then, they spend hundreds of hours trying, failing, and trying again, in order to replicate the piece exactly." Maybe i'm a bit bitter because all i can ever manage is some pictures and maybe a trip a museum when i'm trying to make something.
