  1. Gaelic Nautical Renaissance.

Scotland is enjoying a renaissance in wooden boat building. Organizations are building West Highland Galleys and many ferings are being built. Such organizations such as GalGeal are using boat building and the boats as a way to reintroduce Gael culture to the people of Scotland and Ireland. In fact Gal Gael built a boat for the Arron Islands. The Lord of the Isles Trust has a full size Birlinn that they operate.

The world renowned Scottish small boat designer Ian Oughtred has taken traditional Scottish vessels designs and adapted them to modern construction techniques. One of his designs the Ness Yawl is currently being built and sailed in many parts of the world.

Every year there is a race across Scotland called Sail Caledonia. Small craft from all over Europe gather for this race. Ian Oughtred one last year racing a boat of his own design.

In Ireland Currach construction is gaining popularity. There is even an active US organization that race Currach in the East Coat. The organization is called the North American Currach Association.

In California a number of Currachs have been constructed by Renaissance fair participants. In Northern California two vessels were built by St. Patrick’s Guild for the Northern California Fair. One of these vessels was rowed under the Golden Gate Bridge. In Southern California two currachs were built. One even had the traditional hide covering.

I have enclosed a number of links to the sites that I referred to above. I encourage every one to look at our nautical history as part of our studying our Gaelic culture.

    Be safe out there!

  2. I am having a 13 foot pulling boat from North Bay Boat works here in Sausalito! I needed a smaller boat as my long boat requires a crew.

She will be 13' LOA with a lapstreak hull. The lads who are building her use local woods.

The vessel is half completed. I will post photos in a day or two.

    Cheers

  3. Very cool Gary.

The Lynx and the Lady Washington will be in Sausalito from May1-12 (+-). That will give a little preview.

We are organizing a Sea Fencible unit. The clothing will be period nautical. We have about 30 people ready to go. (my long boat hold 12)

This should be fun! Now that the Royaliste is the HOME TEAM, you need to keep the Bay free from them Brits!

  4. Not pyrates but priveteers!

Any body in Northern California interested in joining a crew of 1812 Priveteers? The Lynx and Lady Washington will be in Saint Francis Bay April 1-14. We are planning some fun activities.

I have a full sized period long boat and there will be some opportunities to play with/on these visiting Tallships.

This is an in-the-water event. We take safty matters pretty sereously. Clothing needs to be early 19th century.

I will keep ye posted as the events are planed

    Cheers

  5. All right you are the first to hear this!

Will mehardies, you won’t have the Hawaiian Chieftain to kick around any more! The brokerage firm of McGrath Pacific is proud to announce the sale of the fine vessel to an East Coast company.

Please let me know if you have any questions!
