  1. There used to be a link on the NQG site for a place to get plans for small 6 & 8 man schooners. ANybody remember that link?
  2. Well, sounds like a good time was had by all. (lol) Glad it all turned out ok and no one panicked or mutinied.
  3. I posted up in an other thread somewhere on how to make a pair of buckets. Most shone in this tread ar cuffs. Bukets actually turn back up to form a bucket.
  4. Quite a common occurrance. In fact that's how the Spanish Armada was destroyed. Using smaller quicker ships they got in under the Galleons cannons and blasted the water line. All that weight plus water equals Glub, glub pretty quickly. It did depend on what you wanted to do. Pirates generally were after prize where as the ships they encountered were trying to sink the Pirate ship.
  5. Being's it's a boat. It has to be something acurrate. Like The Money Pit Bank's Bitch My Childs College Fund How about Buggering Pete's Buggering Boat Ok seriously Flaming Rose. 6. Ifinya can't find Marvel Mystery Oil in your area use 3 in 1. By the by, the worst thing you can do is touch you steel within yur nasty bare hands. Skin acid corodes faster than almost anything else. So ifinya handle the steal. Wipe it off.
  7. All right mates a little background then advice. I have been doing leather work for 20 years and good boots are one of the hardest things to find or make. I have been a re-enactor for American War of Northen Aggression, American Revolution, Texas Independence, English Revolution, WWI American, WWII English SAS & German Waffen SS, American Western. Most of these organization are authintication Nazi's. As in if your under garments or the soles of your shoes/boots are wrong you don't get to play. So needless to say may standards are a little higher for quality than some others. That being said you need to look at how hard on your foot wear you are. From what is stated on the site and looking at the photos I can tell you that this is more a fashion or low end biker leather. If you only wear them occassionally and aren't hard on them. Then they should work. If you are like me and wear them on a regular basis for re-enacting and live stunt shows. They wouldn't hold up. These are considered "Cuff" boots. I have two pair I use for Pirate work. One is not historically accurate but are very durable and are more a moccosin style. You can see them in my profile picture. The have a rubber sole for traction during shows and are made of Water Buffalo with stag crowns for buttons. The others are Bucket Boots made from a pair of East German Officers boots. I have large calfs and had to split the back seam and add a spacer. Then I made my Tops. The pattern is actually very easy. Take an old paper flat bottom Dixie cup. Pop the bottom out. Split the seam. VIOLA there's your pattern. Now to figure your size, measure the distance around the top of your boot. Add one inch to the measurment. Take this measurement on both boots. They may vary. Measure the distance around your thigh. Add 5 inches. Measure the distance from the top of the boot to where you want the top of the boot to come up your thigh. Add a 1/2 inch. Get your leather. I recommend at least a 7-8 weight. Pre dyed if you can get it. If not. Dye the leather after you get it cut out. Now lay out a piece of plywood to use as a cutting table. Put a screw at the base of the bord and tie a long string on it. You've just made a big protractor. Lay your leather out in front. Measure from the screw up the string the final calculation you made for the top of the original boot top. For shits and giggles let's call it (20.5 inches) Put your pen or pencil at that point and use the string to guide you line in a semi circle. Now, cut that measurement in half. (10.25) Measure from the center point of that line around the semi circle that distance (10.5)and make a make. Same on the other side. Now measure from the center point again. Measure up the string the top distance (Lets say (12 inches). And make your new center mark for the new top top. Take the distance you need for the top of the buckets and do just what you did for the lower semi circle. Draw a line from the end points of the top semi circle to the bottom semi circle end mark. Cut 'em out and sew them to the tops of the boots and then up the back seam. You have a 1/2 inch seam allowance. When your done. Soak the areas of the boots youwant to make the folds at and fold up and let them dry. Once dry, the more you unfold and fold them the easier it will be when the leather breaks in.
  8. It was shortly after this defeat that Arnold went turncoat fearing the Colonies were doomed to loose. The Limes actually errected a statue to the bugger as a hero.

  19. Keep in mind that pockets as we think of them in clothing wearn't common in the early 1600's. And it is much easier to cut the string on a purse than that cord around your neck to steal it. So many times a hole would be drilled or punched and "you wore your wealth." Same as why a pirate or sailor might have worn an earing or coin on a necklass. If you perished in battle or went over board. Who ever found you/collected your body got to keep the "wealth you wore" for getting you a christian burial.
  20. If you are cleaning bronze or copper. And it's not a truely valueable piece. Try viniger and salt. Just rub the viniger soaked salt over the piece. You can also soak it in a V&S solution and it will work. Remember doing that with an old penny in science class. I lost an ebay auction last night by .50 on a 1720 Reale. It went foe $9.51. Wasn't in bad shape. If been moving more towards Ducatts lately. The last dive trip I was on was off the coast of Nicaragua near Puerto Cabezas. By chance I found a 1645 Spanish Doubloon in 45ft of clear blue. You always find the best stuff after a hurricane.
  21. Thanks Coastie. but that's his "Letter of Marque" which allowed him the right to Privatier. His Articles of Agreement were as follows: 1. Incentive Bonus: “The man who shall first see a Saile. If she be a Prize shall receive one hundred pieces of eight.” 2. Workman’s Compensation: “That if any man shall lose an Eye, Legg or Arme or the use thereof . . . shall receive . . . six hundred pieces of eight, or six able Slaves.” 3. Discipline: “That whosoever shall disobey Command shall lose his share or receive such Corporall punishment as the Cap.t and Major part of the Company shall deem fit.” (Captain Kidd could not punish his men without the consent of the majority.) “That man is proved a Coward in time of Engagem.t shall lose his share.” “That man that shall be drunk in time of Engagement before the prisoners then taken be secured, shall lose his share.” (A drunken post-victory celebration was obviously expected.) “That man that shall breed a Mutiny Riot on Board the ship or Prize taken shall lose his shares and receive such Corporall punishment as the Capt. and major part of the Comany shall deem fitt.” (Again, Kidd rules by permission.) “That if any man shall defraude the Capt. or Company of any Treasure, as Money, Goods, Ware, Merchandizes or any other thing whatsoever to the value of one piece of eight . . . shall lose his Share and be put on shore upon the first inhabitted Island or other place that the said ship shall touch at.” 4. Sharing: “That what money or Treasure shall be taken by the said ship and Company shall be put on board of the Man of War and there be shared immediately, and all Wares and Merchandizes when legally condemned to be legally divided amongst the ships Company according to Articles” (Kidd reserved 40 shares for himself and the owners, with the rest to go to the crew.) These rules were signed by those that crewed with him.
  22. Usually before one took passage as crew of a Pirate ship (voluntarily that is) ya had to sign the "Articles". Does anyone have or know of a link to some of these?
