Mr. Thighbiter, Would you mind sharing some pics? I woul really like to see how the brown look, specially in rough out as that is what I am leaning towards for myself (although in straight last, assuming there is good feedback regarding that eventually).

Actually, funny thing about the rum... In the rush to unpack Kate and I so M.A. d'Dogge could get on his way home, I wound up with the Mount Gay rum, and he ran off with my bottle... Fortunately, both bottles had a like amount of rum in them, so I'm thinking it is a fair trade. I was going to polish off the bottle this Sunday with a few friends before going to see Alice Cooper in concert.

Are you kidding! I used to stay up until 1:00 AM every Wednesday night back in Toronto to watch Freakazoid! I was pretty disappointed when the series ended... But not horribly suprised considering the air time it had.

Sorry you missed the fine print... (unless you ordered crooked last shoes on purpose for reasons of comfort or orthotic concerns or problems) But you still did get a great looking pair of shoes out of the deal. I'm envious!

Metasalem, All period shoes (as far as the evidence I have seen) are straight lasted... The Loyalist shoes were made crooked lasted by default, from what I was told by Loyalist you had to specify straight last (did you?) in order to get straight lasted shoes... The worrysome bit, and the part that has made me most reluctant to order is that the web site pointedly states that if you order straight last, they DO NOT guarantee fit. So I was waiting to see if those who ordered straight lasted shoes got shoes that fit or not, and also that they even got straight lasted shoes at all. If they are delivering crooked lasted shoes to people that ordered straight lasts, then that (in my opinion) is a huge problem. If you thought you were getting straight lasts but didn't specify for them in your order that is a different matter altogether.

Dude, As great as it would be to see you again and have you here for this event... I do not want to be even indriectly responsible for your divorce. Stay at home and spoil the missus... Or if she likes to play pirate as well, drag her along and call it a weekend getaway.

I'm pretty much holding out to hear a good report on the two variables that have not been shown yet... Someone who has ordered the straight lasts (want to make sure they get that correct). And someone who has ordered the rough out. As soon as I have seen or heard from a reliable source (pics would be great!) that Loyalist's manufacturer has gotten those two elements correct, and I can scrape together the funds, my order is going in.

What is funny about this... Is when I first saw images of the Whydah Shot box, I had wondered if it was sealed in wax because of the colouring of the leather. This is the first peice of textual evidence I have seen to support that guess. http://pyracy.com/forums/index.php?showtop...=9760&hl=whydah My original post is about three quarters if the way down the page. As for the silk ribbon thing, I think there is textual evidence to support that. If you do a search through Twill for pistol carriage or some similar words, you will find the old thread with that information and the references. Wish I could be of more help there, but I don't remember that thread off the top of my head.

Wot?!?!? Am I not a good enough drunk or a good enough bastard to be one of the druken bastards?

Don't be discouraged Rats... While you will be sorely missed, this small demo will likely be a small demo, and a planning session for a bigger event next spring or summer... And that is the one you will want to not miss!

Now, here is the skinny... Mark (head of the Scioto Pirates, which is the local burgeoning pirate re-enactment group) has just suggested a POSSIBLE demo on the Santa Maria for Sept. 20th (in honour of "Talk Like a Pirate Day" which is the day before). IF this comes together, it will likely be a small demo, similar to what we did in July. I will let you all know as soon as I recieve firm word on this happenning or not. But it is looking promising as the ship does not have any other events planned for this day. This small demo style event has a fair bit of restrictions attached to it (assuming we are stuck with the same rules/guidelines as we were last time). Black Powder weapons HAVE TO REMAIN on the ship, or be packed up to be transported to or from the ship. The ship is on the river in the heart of an urban downtown area, so flintlock pressence is something that must be done with great care. The ship has little to no display space, so bringing a chest or table to work on or place any display items is crucial, otherwise you will likely get stuck laying you items out on the deck. We could feasibly do some limited fencing sword work display or practice, but being shipboard, would make this tricky... Although if we remove our black powder weapons, we might be able to do some of this on the grass near the ship. I'd have to run this by Mark to see what he thinks. Anyways, the pirate demos would most likely be worked into and in between the ships normal tour, which focusses on the history of the ship and Christopher Columbus' travels, but this is again subject to change. If anyone has ideas or thoughts that might work, or if you have any idea if you might be able to make it down to Columbus for this, please let me know. I imagine during the lulls in this demo, and perhaps after the demo, we could discuss the possibility of a more festival/invasion style event for next spring or summer (as a fundraiser as mentioned above in a previous post).

M.A. d'Dogge, you can come and play Santa if you really want to... But it might be a little out of season for you. Now, here is the skinny... Reading back through this thread... I've come to a few conclusions for myself... I might best NOT be a blacksmith this year... I've not had as much time to practice this summer as I originally wished to... The few times I did get out banging on metal, I was so rusty I would be embaressed to demo for the public. Next, I will try to put together a more simple demo-ish type thing to do around camp between now and then, in a living history style (by the definition of the term I am most familiar with, which may vary from others' usage). Maybe I'll do tailoring/clothing manufacture, I seem to be good at that...

I am no where near an expert on the matter... But all of my research on the topic seems to indicate that it was during the Elizabethan age, and the years following that shoes changed from "turned shoe" construction to welted construction... By the late 17th century, I am fairly certain that most (if not all) shoes were being made in a welted fashion. I think (going from memory here) that welted shoes even start to appear as early as the reign of Henry VIII. But again, it seems as if turned shoes remained dominant until around the turn of the 16th to 17th century.

It was "Cloudberry" mead. And I'm glad you liked it Dutch! Cloudberries are a fairly uncommon berry, that mostly grow in Scandinavia and the eastern coastal parts of Canada. Up until Beaufort, I thought those were the only areas cloudberries grew in, but Callenish has informed me that there are a few farms over in PA that grow them... So I am going to do some reading into the season for those berries, and when the time comes I, will be able to do what I thought I would never be able to do again... Make more cloudberry mead! Your cyser sounds great Zeph! One thing you might want to consider, is making it with just pure apple... The addition of berries (I am guessing here) is mostly for the purpose of adding tannins (as well as extra flavours)... You can add tannin powder (available from you favourite home brew/home winemaking store) or a used tea bag to get tannins into your brews. This will allow you to make it with just pure honey and apples (if that is what you want) without adding other flavours to the party. Just make sure that the tea bag is used. Tea is VERY HIGH in tannins, so using a used tea bag ensures the tannins won't be too strong, and also keep the addition of tea flavours from changing the flavour profile too much.

Hurricane, check out GoF's web site, somewhere on there (don't have the link handy) he has a tutorial on how to do it... Lots of pictures and good instructions, so that should do the trick for you. Lets see some pics of those shoes now!!!

My main concern regarding the fencing thing at the Santa Maria, is I am unsure whether it is a sport fencing gig, or an SCA fencing tourney, or whatever... And as such, I am a little warry of trying to push for this as it might be perceived as an attempt to steal the spotlight... If it is sports fencing, sports fencing tends to work best in a more conservative atmosphere, if it is SCA.. well SCA and re-enactors have always had an uneasy relationship... Choosing another time might be more ideal so we can take and keep the spotlight rather than having to share it or tread lightly so as to not steal the thunder of the fencers. Like Kate said, I will try and contact the people I know that are in tighter with the ship's committee and see what either of them advises and take it from there. I am almost thinking because of the late date, it might be best to await the beginning of the next season so as to maximize our potential attendance and give us more time to really organize a spectacular event... I have a lot of concerns about "red tape" because of the urban downtown setting of the Santa Maria, so having that time to see what red tape we can dance around or avoid would be most helpful as well. Thanks for starting seperate thread to discuss this on... It will be much to our advantage to keep all the thoughts, ideas, and concerns for this together.

Oh, one more thing... Captain Samuel Mosely (the suspected former buccaneer) was one of the most successful captains in the entire war. Many of the War's key battles hinged on his unit's participation. His unit contained a few members that were also reputed buccaneers, as well as a few of the captured Dutch pirates I mentioned in the previous post. They were offered the chance to fight for the colonies for their freedom/pardon.

There is talks about a possible re-enactment of one of the battles in King Philips War next June... See this thread on this other forum for more info A really good and easily approachable book on the topic is "Flintlock and Tomahawk: New England in King Philip's War" by Douglas Edward Leach, I have a few more books about this war if there is anyone interested in doing some more in depth reading about the war. One neat reference that relates to the Pyracy Pub, is one Captain Samuel Mosely (sometimes spelled Moseley) may have been a buccaneer before being a captain of one of the militia units in this war. I've done a modest amount of looking and not found anything to absolutely confirm this, but considering Mosely was a naval captain responsible for capturing some Dutch pirates just prior to the outbreak of this war, I find the prospect of him being a former buccaneer realistic at least.

For Jesssica it usually takes about 2 and 1/4 yards of 60 inch wide fabric to do her petticotes, I really like how full they turn out in that width, but I imagine we could use the same 2 1/4 yards of 48 inch wide fabric to reasonable results.

Because Rats and I tried to bury him.... We were sick of him being the pretty one.

A few more things about the costrels... I use natural veg tan leather for them so the colour starts out as a light to medium tan (depending on the leather)... the hardenning and water proofing makes them much darker (as depicted on the first page of this thread), but this is an all natural process so there can and will be some colour variation. As stated above, I can use leather dyes to ensure black is acheived (if you are inclined to black), but I doubt I could get any other colour but black or the dark and slightly random brown from the natural process. I will be charging an extra $5 for dyeing them black for those who desire that. I just found provenance for these styles of costrel in the late rennaissance, THIS LINK shows a carved version that was found on the Mary Rose (about 1545)... So they seem good ffrom the mid 16th century right up to the very early 18th century, but seem to vanish after the 17-teens or so.

I can use black leather.... The dyes I use claim to be non-toxic, and would be sealed in under the pitch and beeswax.... But I would very much prefer not to use dye if I can, I just don't trust them enough. By the way, 3 is where I was going to set the beginning mark for bulk discount. I'll PM you with the details.

Picture are here Although I am stiull in the process of labelling them and "tagging" them. If you can help fill in the names of those I have forgotten I would be most appreciative! Enjoy... And don't mind the non-pirate pictures of the day at the beach in the middle. That was just Jessica and my vacation portion of this trip.

Damn straight Rats, Any excuse to get M.A. d'Dogge and Rats... I mean Rats and M.A. d'Dogge together again... Which order is that supposed to be in? I should be able to offload the pictures on the wifs camera this afternoon and get those shared out... Most are from the festival, but she did take quite a few during our extra-carricular photo shoots as well.
