Interesting Parallel between Pirates and Musketeers.... since Disney produces so many 'costume dramas' they have warehouses full of set dressing, costuming, etc. if you look at ol' Captain Jack Sparrow's Baldric buckle, in the first film, it's IDENTICAL to Oliver Platt's Baldric Buckle from "The Three Musketeers" the only difference is that they turned it on its side! my guess is that they simply 'raided the warehouse' as it were, and picked things that 'looked piratey'......... of course I'm sure contemporary illustration, and popular culture influenced the look as well.......and I wouldn't put the Rum Bottle theory out of the realm of possibility........

Paul, I'm still stoked about how cool your flag is, honestly...... chances are, that's what the authentic Pirate Flags looked like....

I only have the one volume (Pirates), and I paid.....I think $8-10 for it.... still well worth it in my opinion.....

Rule Number One: Never stop asking questions..... if you hadn't asked, we never would've figured it out..... I ain't trying to prove one way or another, and I don't have a problem with either (provided they're aware their boots ain't period), I'm just trying to present what I found..... that being said, I still need to find a good pair of shoes.....heh.....

hey, I was never trying to make it something it wasn't......I never would've had the keen eye (or fantastic research ability) that you and Foxe posess! I'm grateful that there are knowledgable people here, who can shed light on the subject...... thanks Foxe, for decoding the mystery! as you can see, I took it at face value, but your diligence has proven the better of Time Life, and smarter heads prevailed!

Great ink everybody! no pirate ink at the present, but I will have early next year.......

I saw him on "Little People, Big World"......he was taking part in a sporting event for people with dwarfism, he's got his own Basketball Team, and does a lot of great work for the kids on the show.... he's got some attitude, but no more so than any normal Sports Star, I find it to be kinda cool...... he seems like a pretty cool guy.......

the source is a Time-Life book on seafaring.......specifically pirates I can't speak for its reliability, but that's the date next to the plate......

Sure!, it's kinda easy to do, so I can get 'em goin' quick enough! (no date given, only mentions that it is 'an 18th century view') (no date given, only that it is an '18th century engraving') (1734) DAMN, I love my scanner!

it looks like the pirate on the left in this 1723 picture is wearing boots....though it could just as easily be long socks, with shoes (it is quite dark)........ If they are boots, that by no means makes it COMMON, as this is the ONLY picture I've seen, where this is the case....... just thought I'd share....

all i know is, that the basic monetary system in place at the time was all about weight, so exchange rates weren't as crucial between nations... but that's not what you wanted to know, so I'll leave it at that....

Cool....then you know how valuable it can be to re-enactors.... I will start scanning 'em prolly before the end of the week..... that is, unless what I plan to scan has already been posted.......

I plan on starting a fund for footwear, so that I can order my boots and shoes at the same time...... so that I always have the option of either, depending on whether I wanna break with history, and go theatrical or not...... best of both worlds, as it were!

on a recent trip looking for interesting books (I buy sell and trade used books), I found a single volume from a Time Life series on seafarers, about piracy...... many period woodcuts, and other pictures depicting common outfits in the period.....as soon as I have time to scan 'em in, I promise I'll share 'em, to help everybody...... if you've already got the book, and things have been posted from it, please let me know, so I don't post pictures everybody's already seen!
