  1. As I understand it, the old saker / culverin / demiculverin etc. classification goes back to the 1500's and was eventually replaced by the more-modern "pounder" arrangement: six-punder, 12-pounder, etc.

I'm going to check ROUND SHOT AND RAMMERS to see if I can find anything about velocities, relative powder charge to shot weight, etc.

  2. Count me in, Sjorovaren! :) I've been thinking about formulating a ship's surgeon persona. I currently have nothing in the way of equipment, though.

My mate Jan is interested in period household medicines.

  3. I saw an interesting post in the Muzzleloader Forum about friction Knives. A friction knife is basically a pocketknife with the knife blade, riveted to the grooved wooden handle; the blade stays open because of the tight fit " or the friction".

I have a bunch of high carbon steel kitchen knives that all have their tips busted off (I had a roommate that didn't know about can openers...) So I got out my grinder and started to make one.

Before anyone tells me about getting the blade too hot and destroying the temper... I took my time, and when the blade started to get warm, I'd let it cool....

The kitchen knives that I have, all have stamped lines along the blade, so I ground those off, I then re-shaped the tip (The tip has to "tuck" into the handle or it will snag and open in your pocket...)

I drilled the hole for the rivet, and then ground the back end.

If I had a polishing wheel, I could do a finer job of it, but it came out smooth enough...

The hardest part of the project is cutting the grove that the blade fits into... using a hand saw, I got the first part of it formed, then I used an Exacto knife and the ground off handle of the "old" knife to scrape the bottom inside edge...

I then whittled the handle to shape, sanded it, marked where the rivet hole should go, and drilled that.

The rivet is nothing more than a cut down nail. I fitted it through the handle, through a thin strip of brass (with a hole in it that acted as a washer so the blade would have a good tight fit), and then peaned both ends over.

Stained the wood, and when that was dry, I sharpened the blade...

I came out kinda nice..... Now I want to get a chunk of horn and make an even nicer one......

Very nice. Patrick. Are you interested in making one for sale?

  4. Aye GOF: take that much-needed break. But don't give up forever! :P

Me, I come and go: have been inactive on this list for a few months, but am getting back into it. Like many of us, I just have TOO DAMN MUCH STUFF going on at the same time :P : my wife and stepdaughter, our dog and three cats, each of our jobs, our house, and now we've bought a second one and plan to keep the first: Baratarians, GAOP, Confederate privateers, cowboy action shooting, modern pistols, the gym, church: it's just overwhelming at times, and I feel bad because I'm so spread out that it's not a case of one thing being done wrong but me taking consolation that I'm doing something else right; instead it's that everything's being done wrong.

Well mate, there's only one solution for that kind of foolishness: you've just got to do less.

Now I have to figure out which of these activities I love that I'm going to cut back on! :P

  5. Aye, Pew - love yer signature! :P

We're home ported in New Orleans; are just in th' recruitin' stage. We do have a brace o' comely wenches from Mobile Bay!

We are also (not just recruitin' here, but doing it every year  ) the Baratarian cannon crew at the annual Battle of New Orleans reenactment.

And where are YE homeported, shipmate?

    Capt. William

  6. Aye Steven, we did our part for our adopted country!

Bosun Carmina and the Sea Wolf were there Friday night and all day Saturday. The Pyrate Queen and I were there both days, and camped out, and I concur with yer weather report: we certainly had the weather gods on our side! :)

  7. Aye, mates, Pyrate Con in April is not the only piratical event coming up in New Orleans. January 12 and 13 marks the reenactment of the Battle of New Orleans. Yer historicalpyratical brethren the Baratarians really won that battle for America, and their present-day descendants will be there again this year, and look to be one of the best-represented American groups in attendance!

Please come out and see us! Cannon and musket firing, cooking demos and lectures and much more! B)

    Capt. William

  8. Glad to see that so many pirates plan to sail to my homeport in April! :) Bosun Carmina and Puck Pirate are working hard to promote this event. The Baratarians will be in attendance! Of course, we have to beat those British invaders first! B)

  9. [quote The PA code even states that antiques are not firearms, but that certain provisions (such as carry/transport) of the firearm sections do apply to antiques. The PA code has exceptions to exceptions to exceptions, but after you parse your way through it, you need a carry license to transport a flintlock in a vehicle except to/from a shoot, a dealer, or a repair place (and maybe a couple other exceptions). I don't think I want to say to a PA state trooper, "Yes I know it's illegal in PA, but the feds have nothing against it".

Are you sure that these laws do not make an exception for black powder weapons?

Also, when I lived in PA I remember that a "firearm" - regardless of how they might have incorporated the action type into the definition - was applicable only to handguns with barrels less than 12 inches, rifles with barrels less than 15 inches, or shotguns with barrels less than 24 inches.

Many flintlock pieces wouldn't qualify as "firearms" just on the basis of barrel length. :)

  10. I understand that the International Pirate Society is sending in a shipload of mates. In any case, the Baratarians will be there: "there" being the Elmwood Cinema in Metairie on Saturday at 3:15.

Those mates who've gotten a bit too much sun and sea spray during the showing are then embarking on a pub crawl in the French Quarter!
