Why not take some time to refresh? That is the best thing about studying history: It already happened, so it will still be there waiting for you when you come back to it
That's the best thought on this topic that I've ever heard!

I just think it's kinda funny.... Disney..... and authentic .......
Aye, not two words that one would normally expect to find linked! But then, we'd be in error if we automatically dismissed something as unauthentic, just because it WAS Disney. :)

Hey, this book (which I never read, and don't intend to) must be worth something: if only for the great discussion it's caused on this list!

No one wants to be a New Orleans Pirate? Why not?

nice shots ...thought i'd add a couple of shots from cutlass/hanger in glasgow museum
showing some of the fine detail available in period pieces (circa 1680)
A truly beautiful piece. A work of art! :)

A very curious thing indeed! There's probably not a particular significance to it: it's probably just used to draw attention.
Did you check to see if Ripley's Museum has an Internet site?

Wish I could take you up on the offer, Costie! :)

1600 is the cutoff year for the reenactment group I am in.
I'm guessing you are in the SCA... but if you are going earlier period, you won't look much like what we now think of as a Pyrate....
Elizabeathain Sea Dogs are kinda fun, but no one knows what the clothing is....
A thrum cap is period, but you get a lot of comments about having a "bad hair day".....
Aye, Asmiv, Mate Patrick there looks VERY Elizabethan seaman. :)

I agree!
We went to see the mouse in June and at MGM my oldest daughter Morgan (her 5th my 37th birthdays) got to learn how to use the lightsaber from two Jedis and then even got to take a turn and fight Darth Vader!!! I'll have to post the pics, they're so cool!
Rats
Yes, we need to see pics of the little pirates!

I always like for people to see real, or pictures of real, cutlasses: shows 'em they were not really the wickedly curved scimitars Hollywood would have us believe.

I have a 1/4 scale CW piece on a naval carriage from Jefferson Armory that looks very nice. I need to drill out the vent hole to make it fireable. I'm not in any overwhelming hurry to do so as I use it just as a conversation piece to show to tourists: often at events where they're firing full scale cannon.
My big disappointment with it was the flimsiness of the box it came in.

I'm sure Beachem's holster is practical. Never seen any historical evidence for such a holster, though. It's more like a modern slide holster.

We saw the collection of artifacts a few years ago: very impressive!
Haven't been able to make to make it back to Beaufort since, though..
it's a nice town with much to see. We loved the old cemetery!

But I dare say, from what they say of ye, slappin' something as lovely as Elizabeth Swan might occur but it wouldn't be across her face; instead it'd be one of her nether cheeks that would feel the palm of yer hand!!

Aye, these mates do speak true of me! (Ah, what a lovely image in me mind's eye...!)

Cap'n William:
No, sir! That be Kevin McNally; Isaac C. Singleton, Jr. be the tall, scarified African-American fellow that plays the Bo'sun of the Black Pearl.
You wouldn't look like him even if'n ye shaved every hair off your piratical head!
Blackbead
Yer right, I don't notice a great deal of resemblance!

We just got word yesterday that Isaac C. Singleton Jr. plans on appearing at Pyrate Con! I'm sure you will remember Mr. Singleton as the Bosun in Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl, the one who backhands Elizabeth!
Is he the one with the mutton chop side whiskers, Carmina? The one I'd look like if I trimmed my beard down to same?
Capt. William

You made the right choice, Pearl. Much as we'd love to have you at PyrateCon, a true pirate is loyal to his own crew. :)
Capt. William

That is most interesting, Blackjohn! I wonder if we could organize a Jacobite pirate crew to place the Duke on the throne?

All the talk about "treasure chests" begs the assumption that pirates ever buried their treasure. There is little evidence in the historical record that they did. Also, what kind of sense would it make to do so?
"A short life and a merry one shall be my motto." These mates stole, divvied the loot, hit port, blew it - and did it all over again.
If you bury treasure: what's the point? You can't blow it. You can't invest it wisely. It's of no use to you until you come back and dig it up; by which point your "shipmates" may have beat you to the punch.
I don't mean to throw cold water on a fun wood-working project, though...

Pyrate Queen Jan, Dudley, Dave Smith, Bosun Carmina and the Sea Wolf (both homeported in nearby Mobile, and they are also organizers for the event), from the local pirates: and me, too! :)

Absolutely beautiful! Mid-50's to mid-70's, clear and sunny. What a wonderful Mardi Gras it was! :)
