  1. Aye Royalist, my list of things I want to read has grown substantially these past few weeks following this thread. Rosalinda, it's the words to Jimmy Buffet's Pirate looks at 40 and here you go.. Mother, mother ocean, I have heard you call Wanted to sail upon your waters since I was three feet tall You've seen it all, you've seen it all Watched the men who rode you switch from sails to steam And in your belly you hold the treasures few have ever seen Most of 'em dream, most of 'em dream Yes I am a pirate, two hundred years too late The cannons don't thunder, there's nothin' to plunder I'm an over-forty victim of fate Arriving too late, arriving too late I've done a bit of smugglin', I've run my share of grass I made enough money to buy Miami, but I pissed it away so fast Never meant to last, never meant to last And I have been drunk now for over two weeks I passed out and I rallied and I sprung a few leaks But I got stop wishin', got to go fishin' Down to rock bottom again Just a few friends, just a few friends (instrumental) I go for younger women, lived with several awhile Though I ran 'em away, they'd come back one day Still could manage to smile Just takes a while, just takes a while Mother, mother ocean, after all the years I've found My occupational hazard being my occupation's just not around I feel like I've drowned, gonna head uptown Coda: I feel like I've drowned, gonna head uptown One of my fave songs of his.
  2. I love reading moby dick, except I tend to skip the part where he goes into endless detail about whale anatomy and such. Call Me Ishmael.....
  3. I mentioned before I am working on a Pirate Weekend here in South Jersey. It will be nothing so grand as some of the larger Florida Festivals, however we do some pretty decent fests here. I have attended several and some ren events, but I have never been a participant, and never really analyzed them as to what works and doesn't. So what I'm looking for is suggestions. If you have participated in one, what would you have liked to see done? If you have attended, same question. What events would you enjoy, and what have been your favorites to attend. Do vendors like to set-up at these events, as I can provide a vendor lane. I'm also curious about copyright laws. I might want to do something I've seen done well at a previous fest, but I would not want to upset someone by re-creating it too closely. So give me your best tips and pointers. And if you would be willing to help me critique plans I am making e-mail me please, and I will e-mail you things as I go along. I have planned events before, but nothing of this magnitude. I will have to coordinate with many businesses as well as hire some. I have sent out feelers to area businesses and the response is very positive. Next I need to put it in proposal form to get the town to approve. This is the tricky part. I have to make it sound beneficial to the area businesses and give them hopes of it bringing in dollars. They will be donating the use of space/porta-a-pots, and the police and clean up, etc..
  4. OK, I'm envious. It must be great to have such a connection with your history. I can go back three greats, maybe four. And we were poor Irish immigrants so a few family photos are it. My great grandmother was the first generation who had a true wedding dress.
  5. Alright ladies who's lining up their bare bumms for the Royalist mark? I think he should go first to show us how it's done.
  6. I like Hornblower, and it's so much easier of a read then O'Brian. I wonder if it's because I saw the movies first. I'm just tormenting myself by making me finish O'brian.
  7. I know I've read Two Years before the Mast. It's been awhile. There's like a helpers guide to Patrick O'brian, which translates some of the terms, and I guess gives you some help with his books. I am wondering if this would help any. I am thinking if I get thru one the others will get easier, as the language becomes more comfortable. I remember things like Jane Austin and other earlier literature being this way.
  8. has anybody ever seen or been on it. I'm thinking about doing some volunteer time over the fall and winter so I can get some crew time onboard. Here is a link http://www.gazela.org/history.htm and a pic
  9. I am once again, slogging my way thru Patrick O'brian's books. I have never read one thru. It's strictly the terminology that starts to get to me. I have started at the beginning and I would like to be thru Far Side of the World, when the movie comes out in November. Have you read them? Why do you think they picked a book so far into the series for the movie? Well, here is a link for the trailer. What be your thoughts? http://www.apple.com/trailers/fox/master_a...der/medium.html
  10. If you're looking for a 17th cent. wedding dress, that a woman would have actually worn, I doubt it would look like a wedding dress. Clothing was to valuable for the average person to purchase something that would only be worn on one occasion. I suppose it's possible that some upper class persons might have had such a thing. Perhaps even likely. If you are looking for a traditional white wedding gown, and just want a 17th century look go onto e-bay. There are merchants selling these, and they are very nice looking.
  11. We want to stay on Key West. I will have transport, but only because it's alot cheaper to fly into Miami and then rent something to drive down. I am getting some reasonable prices in the $75.range but I don't want to stay at a dive. Don't need anything fancy, just clean, preferably with a pool. And since the car, I will need a place offering parking. I am wondering about some of the B&B's. This is also our 20th wedding anniversary.
  12. Perhaps also one with big feet. You know you have to keep yer balance on a ship and all.
  13. I'm happy with the look of my ear piercings. I have three lower piercings and one cartiladge. Hopefully the water will have warmed up a bit. If so I'm going swimming since the salt water is good for healing. Let me know how you make out with the tatt. I want to know how painful it is, since I really want to do this. I will most likely get it done in the keys while there for Pirates in Paradise.
  14. I have been suffering this past month due to some multi-piercing I had done on my ear and cartiladge. It took like 8 weeks til I could sleep on that side of my head. Now 2 out of the three are mostly healed and one still hurts. I came so close to yanking them all out. The one was so swollen I put the earing in and then put a bandaid over it, with no backing because it was too tight. I do believe a tattoo would have been less painful. In future reference if you get upper ear piercings, go to a piercing place (not a mall type store) and have it done with a needle, not a gun. Far less swelling and chance of scar tissue. (this learned from my 19yo daughter after the fact)
  15. Ya know, it's not the pacing the floors kinda worried. Ya know he is fine and well. And I have contact numbers if I wished to use them. Just, one of the kids is 1000 miles away worried. He's taken surf trips before, all up and down the east coast.
  16. There is a one day bus trip planned for which they left very early. Is it feasable that this is where to. I know that one of the older guys specifically told my son he would get him to the wedge. For us east coasters even a 3hr. drive would not be out of line since cali is a rare trip.
  17. well, I'll be checking it out. Reminds me of the Seinfeld episode where Cramer wanted to try out to play himself in Jerry's sitom.
  18. Well...I imagine the moms are just bringing their kids along as an excuse! That's what I would do anyway. Then move in for the kill later... I just saw this. Yep. I'd say that's what's happening. Kids have always loved pirates. Don't you think it's odd that suddenly ye got lots of young single moms tugging their (or borrowed kids) along to check out the pirate boat?
  19. Royaliste - are ye saying you'll be in the series, or working on it? Either way, quite cool. It should be good.
  20. Very cool about the earthquake. I'm going to look it up, as my knowledge of that would be limited. What will be the sci-fi series?
  21. What do you mean. You'll be doing research on it? Dorian - those pics give a good idea. I understand as I'm photographically challenged. The site I used for pics has gone down and I have yet to bother figuring my way around another. I prefer the look of the natural tattoos. Particularly since when I get it done, I will not be getting something large, and won't have alot of space for detailing. And I can't imagine having to go back in and get the colors freshened up.
  22. Very nice Dorian (I"m pretending the pic posted). If I do it I will be going for a celtic design, in keeping with the Irish ancestry. My sister got a celtic cross on her ankle with some gaelic wording.
  23. LOL. It looks might tame for what he had heard about the wedge. The thing with the wedge for surfers, he was told, is that the waves are a certain height, but that they break into very shallow water. So if you aren't careful you end up wedged into the sand face first.
  24. This is very cool. My sons (who are not big history buffs) and I sat thru this twice. I am actually thinking of plunking down the $80. to buy the dvd set. I've also read the book. I come from a military family, and some of the gentleman referenced, who were actually used in the film, are from my grandfathers generation and from our old Philly neighborhood. If my grandparents were alive, they would probably know them. I may be up in your neck of the woods sometime next year. My son runs and we may be going to the Olympic trials. I would love to see your ship. Dorian - I much prefer the traditional dark colors. If you do web searches there are Tahitian and Polynesian tattoo samples. There are also books on these. I haven't seen Hawaiian. Post the pics if you can. It is interesting to see what others do. I'm waiting to hear from a female who has actually done this.
  25. Thank you for the help. I will have questions. I'm a ways away from being ready to do this. I need to improve my sailng skills. As a youngster I spent alot of time on and around boats but have been busy and lax for quite some time. I've been doing research, but there's very little good practical advice out there. I would need to be employed for awhile, so I would be needing to settle in a warmer port then here. I know there are folks who live aboard here, but they need bubblers, and wrap their boats in plastic, etc.. I am getting serious about my writing, in hopes that at least thru magazine articles and some newpaper stringing, I might reach a livable income.
